NOTE this is a lighthearted thread, I hope it doesn't descend into a big argument about cyclists and pedestrians as has happened before!

It's just I have already been hit once before by a cyclist ploughing through a red light, and was luckily unhurt, and then today I was waiting at a zebra crossing, a van had stopped, I was about to step out and a cyclist whizzed across my path at top speed, one second later and OUCH!

So, should I resign myself to an inevitable collision one day?

I suggest you wear protective gear at all times, you could arm yourself with a water pistol for added instant revenge protection.

One ran into me as I was running on the road today, I mean, anyone would think he had the right of way, the way he pushed me into a grassy verge.

I've often contemplated getting ds1 to carry a handy stick, which I could grab to poke through the wheels, and pull it off as a terrible child's prank. Is that a bit harsh do you think?

Perhaps you should take up cycling yourself. Then you will instead come to grief when unobservant pedestrian steps out in front of you without looking.

Unlikely. In a collision between a cyclist and a pedestrian the cyclist will almost always come of worse.

As a cyclist, I have had pedestrians step right out in front of me, not at a crossing, just when the 4-wheeled traffic had stopped. So imo cyclists and pedestrians can be as bad as each other.

Well, that is bad too. And I don't want this to become a cyclist v pedestrian thread.

Purely in my experience, I was in the right both times, which I why I fear for my safety!!

well I am sure I'd be unhurt then...the biker who hit my arse would be sent flying back up the road though

Why not sling two wheels round your neck when you're walking and pretend to be a cyclist too? Then you can batter anyone who hits you with your wheels. I've got a couple of spare bike wheels you can have.

Disclaimer: GrendelsMum cycles daily. GrendelsMum has never hit a pedestrian, not even the daft tourists that step backwards out into the road to take a photo without looking and who frankly deserve it. Grendelsmum has once hit a bloke on a bike, though.

Yesterday, I narrowly dodged a cyclist bent on killing me and himself.

Disclaimer: I will ignore anyone pointing out that I was in the wrong, because I was, and so was he.

I crossed the road at a junction against the red man.

The only car in sight was waiting at a red light. I looked him in the eye to make sure he'd seen me before I started to cross.

Luckily I looked over both shoulders too which was how I saw the cyclist approaching me at speed the wrong way down a one-way street which should feed out of the junction, not in.

I'm sorry I deprived him of the chance to yell at me for not looking.

The driver looked quite smugly at the pair of us.

ps I know other people's cyclist stories, like other people's dreams, are intensely dull. But I've got nothing to do this morning.

No, tallulah, that was gripping. I could really visualise the scene.

I did some work on this a few years back, and discovered to my surprise that between five and 10 pedestrians are killed each year in collisions with cyclists, according to DoT figures. Pedestrians, of course, remain the most vulnerable users of roads and pavements.

can i just say while we're on the subject, i'd like to thank the cyclist who went straight through a red light the a couple of months back aiming directly at me.i'm very thankful that he noticed me at the last second and swerved to avoid me to his own detriment by going straight into the back of a parked car.
i'm not as thankfull that he then got up and tried to blame me,tell me i should look where i'm going and then ask what i intended to do about the damage to his bike.

tallulah - I thought my cyclist story was very interesting
