Ich stimme Ihnen zu, Madame!

I mean to say, no big deal. If they wanted to gossip about you, they would still probably move out range. It takes nerves of steel to gossip about someone even in another language who is within earshot. So you might be being a tad over sensitive about it.

I speak German with DSs, in the house and when we are out and about, yes, even in front of other people.
I am glad to say, I've had nothing but positive comments from people, both friends and strangers. And my kids grow up bilingually and can communicate with their German grandparents.
OP, YABU, and inflammatory.

why shouldn't people talk in whatever language they choose?

unless of course they were talking TO YOU in a language they clearly knew you didn't understand

MadameDefarge · 13/06/2009 23:28

Ihnen oder mich, pacific?

Though I think I get your answer!

goodwitch - its not the same as whispering. whispering clearly gives the impression that you don't want someone to hear, speaking in a foreign language, doesn't. unless its like me and dh speaking really bad french so that ds doesn't know we are planning a hairwash and teethclean!

MadameDefarge · 13/06/2009 23:35

I think you need to say to them, : I am sorry, I was way to lazy to be bothered to learn another language when I was at school, do you think I could have private lessons so I don't continue my life as as a sad monolinguist?"
