Right, it was my birthday yesterday - I am now 39. A lot of miles on the clock I know, but I look and feel a lot younger. Sure, last weekend I was at a nightclub dancing till 4am! I'm fitter and slimmer than I was at 20.

Anyway I was pleased to have people telling me yesterday that I look nowhere near 39 - that was enough of a birthday present for me!

Until I arrived home from work today to find a card and a present from my MIL. The present? Olay anti-wrinkle provital tinted moisturiser for mature skin!!!!!! FFS, this stuff is for over-70s!! I'm tempted to ask her did she leave her new moisturiser behind by accident. But I'll just have a rant on MN instead!

My dad and uncle were notorious for being tight with presents when we were younger. My grandad died when they were young and they had to go out to work early to support my grandmother and grew up counting pennies. At christmas when i was 14 i was sent a cheap freebie bottle of perfume from my uncle called 'Tramp'. My father (and i am so embarassed to report this) sent my cousin a blank dvd tape. One of three, which he broke up and distributed individually to my cousins.

Be grateful for a nice bottle of moisturiser and if it really offends. Keep it, repackage it and pass it back at Christmas.

My friend received a packet of plastic coat hangers for her xmas pressie from her mil

Her 3 yr old ds said , when she opened them, 'that's not a present'!!!!

Buy her a bucket of embalming fluid for Christmas.

A friend of mine's MIL once gave her a roll each of cling film and tin foil for Christmas.

Oh just use it. It's probably very good. Unless you think it's a snide dig I would put it down to slightly misguided present, or a recycled christmas present.

My mum used to get second-hand pants from the jumble sale from her MIL!
