to think that £1.13 per slice of ham is not too much, how much do you think is reasonable to pay

dh is moaning that i spend too much money on ham, we have the money we are not short.

he doesn't mind the cheap stuff for about a pound a packet

Jean, just knew this would be your thread!

You should be married to my DH, he is similarly fussy about ham.

Depending on where we buy it from and the thickness of the slice, then £1.13 is about what we pay. It is DH's big thing.
We do also freeze leftover beef/gammon/chicken for sandwiches too.

If I bought DH the packets of ham from the supermarket he'd leave me I think, he will eat Spam though?

Sassybeast · 08/06/2009 15:54

How long does cooked ham keep in the freezer for please ? Liking that idea as I can't afford the poshest ham but the kids eat loads.....

JeanPoole · 08/06/2009 15:55

OMG
fancy know it was me posting this.

well i didn't know you could freeze it.
that is something new i have learnt today

bellavita · 08/06/2009 15:59

I always buy ham from the butchers, I find the pre-packed supermarket stuff wet and rubbery.

I will go in and say ask for 4 slices, and depending on how far down the joint it is obviously depends on how big the slices are. On average, I would say if I asked for 4 slices from a decent piece, then I would be paying around £2.70,maybe just a little bit more.

Lizzylou · 08/06/2009 15:59

Sassy, ours is in the freezer for only about a month I'd say.
Except for when DH bought a bird in a bird in a bird roast thing for Christmas, think it took us 2months+ to eat all of that

I know you can buy proper meat slicer things (Lakeland/Betterware?), we were going to get one, they look like miniature versions of the ones delis use.

DH once spent £7 on 4 slices of Turkey breast from Booths. I was livid, could have got a whole free range bloody chicken for that but it is his one extravagance. And it was delicious.

JeanPoole · 08/06/2009 16:05

oh what the bird in a bird in a bird like? i might do that this year.

bet dh will be pleased

i don't why everyone thinks butchers are cheaper i aalways find it dearer.

if i cook a ham myself what am i after a gammon joint?

OP posts:
Sassybeast · 08/06/2009 16:10

Lizzyloo - that's brill - thanks. Will have no trouble getting through a load in an month!

JeanPoole · 08/06/2009 16:11

it's ment to be the best

i will look for it

OP posts:
Tortington · 08/06/2009 16:12

i went to lidle

which isn't cheaper than tesco

5 slices of 'supreme' ham ( or somethingnamesd similar) quite nice stuff

£2.80 ish

i do buy cheaper.

i think you do spend too much on ham

furthermore £10 for a chicken is ridiculous.

JeanPoole · 08/06/2009 16:16

cokeham

i agree 10 quid for a chicken is too much that's why i find the butchers dear, and can't understand people that say it's cheap.

unless he is just a con-artist.

ok, i'm going to try and do my own.

The 3 bird roast was delicious, but there is a lot of meat leftover. Great for if you have a houseful for Christmas dinner though.

We get our ham from the butcher, but they are quite reasonable though not as cheap as supermarket, we only buy meat from the butchers but eat less meat now as it all mounts up.

dorisbonkers · 08/06/2009 16:23

I bought six sausages at the farmers market in Peckham at the weekend and they cost more than seven quid! I've been out of the country for a few years but jesus, seven quid?? They were great though.

CandleQueen · 08/06/2009 16:27

I would pay about £9 a kilo. I always get ham from the supermarket deli counter (Sainsburys). I get whats on offer!

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/06/2009 16:28

I like nice ham but DD and DP gobble it up like the pigs they are, so expensive ham last no time at all.

I agree that to cook a ham is as easy as anything. I first tried it at Christmas thinking it would be the mother of all faff, however it was as easy as anything and was absolutely gorgeous. Is easy cooking as well, you just leave it to sit there in a pan.

I have only ever done hams in coke or cherry coke - it doesn't taste a bit like coke, just has a load of flavour.

I also have one of those electric knives, which helps get thin slices out. I have never actually frozen any - I didn't know you could - which is a great idea if the locusts actually left enough ham for me to freeze!

I hate buying cheap ham as well. Slimy. But I wouldn't pay that much. Where do you do your shopping, Fortnums?

JeanPoole · 08/06/2009 16:31

oh i can't wait to try doing my own now.

i'm going to try to coke one.

it is not from fortums, it's from ocado.

i would love to go to fortums, just for a one off treat.
or harrods food hall and do a full shop.

infact i might do that for a one off treat just to see what it's like.

which one is best?

DSs eat MOUNTAINS of ham. We have what we call "good ham" and then there is the usual cheaper stuff from Tesco and the like - but it's not really ham is it. However it does for them. You can usually get it on bogof and I keep packets in the freezer. I find the good stuff (M and S two packets for £4 and the like)disappears extremely quickly. DS1 could demolish a packet in his coming home from school snack! I get it as a treat every couple of weeks. M and S does a good in between one - small square pack extra lean which is £2.99 for 20 slices I think. I also cook a whole ham/gammon and mean to slice it and freeze it but it never gets that far. Usually does us one hot meal and a couple of days of sandwiches. I actually have to hide stuff in our house of the main monthly stocking up shop wouldn't last a week.

Morloth · 08/06/2009 16:52

Buy him the cheap one and get yourself the good one, it is a win win.

SomeGuy · 08/06/2009 16:54

what sort of ham is it, and how much is 3 slices in grams?

I am a cured meat connoisseur, I abhor the shit ham that make up the vast bulk of what s/markets sell.

BUT pre-packaged ham is often a rip-off con job.

JeanPoole · 08/06/2009 16:57

morloth, i love that idea.

I think he has a point TBH. Waitrose pre-packed meats are the biggest rip-off. You can get a good Parma ham, which is an inherently more costly product (better quality meat used, longer curing time, restricted production area) for less than that. That's £38/kg. I buy ham from Selfridges sometimes and I'm pretty sure they charge less than that for pretty much everything.

I would take a look at the deli counter, it's usually about half the price.

I think £20/kg is tops for sliced ham, maybe up to £30 for something that has a long curing time.

JeanPoole · 08/06/2009 17:13

ohh selfridges, i would like to do a shop there too.

OP posts:
lizziemun · 08/06/2009 17:21

I buy this for around £5.

Soak overnight changing the water every few hours to get rid of any excess salt. Then boil with a few peppercorns, bay leaf and glove for a few hours.

When cold i take to my mum who slices it on her machine and freeze in foil with about 5/6 slices in. Last for a couple of months.
