Was in supermarket doing my shopping got to the till, had £80 worth of shopping in this was 4 cans of john smiths for dh. The drink was at the end of the shopping so everything had gone through, the checkout lady asked for id (I am 29 but do look young but not that young and god its 4 cans of beer with a full shop not some chavvy drink) I said i did not have any on me but i used to work in the said supermarket so said can you call my old manager who will verify my age. She tutted at me and called the line manager who i used to work for, she said yes she is definitly over age it was 6 years when i worked there and i was definitly over 18 then. The jobsworth sorry checkout lady still looked at me distastefully and the manager said it is up to the checkout lady though cos she originally akked for the id. I said can i have it then and she looked at me and went nah !!!!!!!! I said are you joking and hse said no i dont think you are over age!!!!!! So i said well i'll leave it then and she said ok and put the beer down and said thats £80.71p and i said no i will leave the lot - grabbed my dd and flounced out of the shop with an air of triumph.

I dont care if i had been shopping for an hour, i used to work in that supermarket and know she will have to put it all away ha ha ha

huffy over reaction.the "jobsworth" still had the last best laugh.

you have beer
no shopping

knowing the manager didnt cut any slack did it

Saltire · 07/06/2009 19:39

Riven - I don't either. I ahd a right to do in Llyods TSB recently. I tried to withdraw money from my account using my passbook. They said I needed ID. I said the only ID I had was A) A debit card for BoS, or B) A photo forces dependants card. They wouldn't accept teh debit card because it belonged to another bank, adn they wouldn't accept the id card as it could be a fake.
I said, but i ahve the passbook and inside the passbook is a copy of a letter sent to my address with some info about the account on it. Still wouldn't give me my money

SillyDaisy · 07/06/2009 19:39

RB that is a cracker!

random · 07/06/2009 19:41

I feel sorry for supermarket checkout assistants...I've heard some get awful abuse for asking for ID ..

GumsNRoses · 07/06/2009 19:41

My Dd 26 did a weeks shopping in Asda, she had her own 4yr old son and my other Dd (her 13yr old sister) with her. She bought £60 of food shopping and had a bottle of wine and some beers.

She was asked for id, gave her driving licence, cashier asked for id for the 13yr old, Dd said she is my sister she is 13....they refused to serve her, supervisor called who knows Dd and myself, said cashier's call, she still refused to serve her. Dd said are you telling me if I come shopping and try to buy alcohol when I have my family with me I won't be served, they said yes

So now we shop at Tesco and I have an ongoing complaint with Asda customer services.

ruddynorah · 07/06/2009 19:42

like i said, there are only 3 forms of id acceptable under challenge 25. the onus of ownership of the credit card is not on the shop assistant, it's on the account holder. hence chip and pin. no liability to the shop.

deaconblue · 07/06/2009 19:46

good flouncing. and YANBU at all. Although annoying to have to do your shopping again

HumpingAnteater · 07/06/2009 19:52

OP - I raise a glass of Merlot to you.

The really stupid thing about this is with part time staff who are under 18 and need an ok from the checkout supervisor. Yet will often resfuse someone over 18 and has ID, but are with a minor

aristocat · 07/06/2009 19:53

fantastic good on you !!!!!!!!!!!

i too have worked in a supermarket and can imagine putting all of it away (ugh)

are you going to complain?

Meglet · 07/06/2009 20:14

gumsandroses where is the logic in that?!

Trikken · 07/06/2009 20:24

I think YABU, I work in a shop and regularly id people. we have 'think 25' when it comes to id-ing people. If you dont id someone who you think is under age and they turned out to be under age you could lose your job, Get a fine, a criminal record and prison sentance.
u were unlucky to be asked for id but once they'd asked they CANNOT go back on it.

Sidge · 07/06/2009 20:28

Cutting off your nose to spite your face really. Now you have to do a whole shop again, wasted an hour in a supermarket (which is hell anyway) and all for 4 cans of shite ale.

I appreciate you were making a point but it seems a rather childish and petty point to make. (but then I detest shopping and would do anything not to have to go once let alone twice!)

ramalama · 07/06/2009 20:30

YANBU

good for you

thinking whether someone is over 25 is a judgement call..the shop assistant made it...was proved wrong and was a total arse nonetheless

I realise you can lose your job etc over selling alcohol to underage people..but the op is over 18...so licensing person, policeman or judge in the queue behind her...there is no way the assistant could have been prosecuted

ellingwoman · 07/06/2009 20:33

Maybe the checkout assistant thought she was being tested by the manager. If she had not stuck to the rules she might have failed the test!

Or, you may have been a mystery shopper testing to see whether she would let you have alcohol without ID.

Hormonesnomore · 07/06/2009 20:37

Well done you - excellent flounce. The only downside is of course you had to go elsewhere & do all the shopping again...

pamelat · 07/06/2009 20:43

Well done. Am impressed. Know its a shame to have lost your shopping but what a cow. Like you say most people buying £80 worth of shopping are old enough to buy a drink, sweeping generalisation but there you go!

I would also be happy to look under age!! I am 30 and have not been asked for about 10 years!

pamelat · 07/06/2009 20:44

In fact I would complain to ASDA (online) and ask for free delivery and a big discount for the "embarassment and inconvenience" that they have put you through despite the store manager knowing your age!!!

Hassled · 07/06/2009 20:45

This thread is depressing the hell out of me - I can't remember when, if ever, I've been IDed. I obviously look so old and decrepit that there isn't a shadow of doubt in any shop assistant's mind. Which is fair enough NOW (am 43) - but 10 years ago? I could probably but Plutonium without anyone giving me a second glance.

ramalama · 07/06/2009 20:49

hassled....snap!

ruddynorah · 07/06/2009 20:50

and asda would respond saying their assistant followed the challenge 25 policy fully, something which is displayed at every till, and in the alcohol section.

Stigaloid · 07/06/2009 20:55

I never understand this - you have to be over 18 to qualify for a credit card - why can't they take your form of payment as proof of age? YANBU - what silly mare to treat you like that.

ruddynorah · 07/06/2009 20:56

i have explained why.

ramalama · 07/06/2009 21:00

but if they can't accept the credit card because it might not be yours...surely they shouldn't accept it for payment...in case it's not yours

MollieO · 07/06/2009 21:02

I never take id when I go shopping. Why should I when I am over 18, over 25 etc. I take my credit card and a phone. I hate supermarket shopping with a handbag as I am always worried I am going to leave it somewhere.

I have left a trolley load of shopping at Asda before now as I've been fed up with waiting but never such a fantastic flounce as yours. Fab .
