Was in supermarket doing my shopping got to the till, had £80 worth of shopping in this was 4 cans of john smiths for dh. The drink was at the end of the shopping so everything had gone through, the checkout lady asked for id (I am 29 but do look young but not that young and god its 4 cans of beer with a full shop not some chavvy drink) I said i did not have any on me but i used to work in the said supermarket so said can you call my old manager who will verify my age. She tutted at me and called the line manager who i used to work for, she said yes she is definitly over age it was 6 years when i worked there and i was definitly over 18 then. The jobsworth sorry checkout lady still looked at me distastefully and the manager said it is up to the checkout lady though cos she originally akked for the id. I said can i have it then and she looked at me and went nah !!!!!!!! I said are you joking and hse said no i dont think you are over age!!!!!! So i said well i'll leave it then and she said ok and put the beer down and said thats £80.71p and i said no i will leave the lot - grabbed my dd and flounced out of the shop with an air of triumph.

I dont care if i had been shopping for an hour, i used to work in that supermarket and know she will have to put it all away ha ha ha

credit card isn't acceptable it could be anyone's. you can only use photo driving licence, passport or pass accredited id card.

lou031205 · 07/06/2009 19:11

YABU once she has asked for ID she can't legally serve you unless ID is seen. The manager is not allowed to vouch for you.

Ripeberry · 07/06/2009 19:12

Well done!

HecatesTwopenceworth · 07/06/2009 19:12

I would have said accept the decision EXCEPT that the manager of that shop - the shop where the op used to work - confirmed that the op was indeed over 18 and she knew that as she had worked there, under her!!! The person serving her was, from that point on, just being a bitch and I don't blame the op for walking out.

traceybath · 07/06/2009 19:13

But differentID the OP's age was verified by a store manager - the checkout person was just being mean.

OP - well done - of course you've got to do the shopping again now though.

KingRolo · 07/06/2009 19:13

Well done on flouncing and well done too on passing for under age at 29!

burningupinspeed · 07/06/2009 19:14

differentID if I was the checkout staff and my manager verified someone's age, why on earth would I refuse them? I wouldn't because I'm not an arse!

HecatesTwopenceworth · 07/06/2009 19:14

oh really lou? I didn't know that was an actual law - do you mean it is a law laid out by government on underage drinking, or a shop policy?

JackBauer · 07/06/2009 19:14

Brilliant flounce. I hope you tossed your hair defiantly as you were triumphantly marching out

EyeballshasBackBoobs · 07/06/2009 19:15

I was id'd for an electric knife recently. I'm 37 and look 47 so I was a bit surprised

Good on you for walking out, not sure I'd have been that brave but wish I was.

mummytopebs · 07/06/2009 19:15

I am praising my decision as yes i have worked in the shop and also in a bar and if someone as in a manger confirmed that a person was definitly over 18 i would trust them that i was able to serve them. A manager has after all seen my passprt and certificates etc as id when i got the job around 10 years ago when i was 19.

I am proud of myself for walking out and yes i did see her face she was shocked - i think its good to be childish now and again, not that as i class this as childish just triumphant victory

I've seen signs up locally in supermarkets that state no ID, no alcohol. She was doing her job.
If the manager had been observed okaying a sale of alcohol to someone who had no ID, the manager would also be in danger of losing their job.

Mintyy · 07/06/2009 19:16

Write a letter of complaint! You deserve an apology and some vouchers at the very least. There are many Mumsnet experts to help with letters of complaint. Post it here, we will tweak it for you .

I would have done the same (re. the flounce).

ruddynorah · 07/06/2009 19:17

it will be a condition of their licence that they apply challenge 25.

misdee · 07/06/2009 19:18

lol.

once i was up at the desk and an older check out lady asked for a 'code 66' which was what u did in safeway if u suspected someone who was underage. i glanced over and saw it was a lad who used to work with us a few years before, who admittingly had a babyfac but was around 22 at the time. so i ok'ed it. checkout opperater came up and asked me if i was sure, i said 'yup, as he used to work here and is older than me'.

GreenMonkies · 07/06/2009 19:19

YANBU, if the manager verified your age the checkout divvy should take her word for it.

but John Smiths, yuck!!!

ilovesprouts · 07/06/2009 19:21

yanbu well done id of done the same too my son always gets id hes 19 but does look younger and my dd is 16 and she once got some cigs (DISGUSTING HABIT) from a local shop in town

scottishmummy · 07/06/2009 19:23

what a poncey over reaction, and glee at making mischief

happy that someone else will have to put your products away?

you have wasted an hour shopping to come home empty handed.

Ohh that showed dem.no one asks you your age without a hissy fit

EccentricaGallumbits · 07/06/2009 19:23

weirdly enough I bought a top in Matalan on Friday and was told I had to verify I was over 16 in order to buy it.

couldn't decide if store youth was trying to be funny or not.

WTF would I not be able to buy a top if I was under 16? And I'm 34 for gods sake and quite obviously over 16!

ilovesprouts · 07/06/2009 19:23

mind you she did have her works polo shirt on

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 07/06/2009 19:25

YANBU. Hilarious. How many under 18's would actually be doing an £80 food shop anyway.

What a miserable cow.

ruddynorah · 07/06/2009 19:26

they don't check for under 18 fgs, they ask everyone who looks under 25 for id in case they are under 18. plenty 24 year olds buy £80 of shopping inc a few cans of shitty beer.

SillyDaisy · 07/06/2009 19:30

very good, although your only going to have to do the shop again.

what is it with checkout assistants today

spottydognonorks · 07/06/2009 19:30

Oh piss off scottishmummy, did you actually read the OP?

RustyBear · 07/06/2009 19:30

A friend of mine (who was 32 at the time, so hadn't anticipated needing ID) was challenged once & offered her credit card as proof that she was over 18 - the checkout assistant said 'no, it might not be your credit card' - and then accepted that credit card in payment for all her other stuff!
