As a teacher and mother I feel I should dread Conservatives getting in.....

OP posts:
ProfYaffle · 05/06/2009 20:28

maternity benefits will be cut, flexible working rights will be cut, minimum wage scrapped or frozen ....

Overmydeadbody · 05/06/2009 20:29

All I'm asking for is actual real examples, it's no good just saying "it will get worse", I want to know how, exactly, it will get worse.

What will they do to public services? Pay everyone less? Reduce the minimum wage?

how will they change the school system?

Sorry, I just want to know, I am not very clued up on politics.

hf128219 · 05/06/2009 20:29

I look forward to it.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 05/06/2009 20:29

I think ProfYaffle has answered your question FairLady

OP posts:
LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 05/06/2009 20:29

"Libras explain why you think it will be a good thing.... "

I didn't say it would be but you are the one who came on here and stated you dread the conservatives coming to power. I am just asking for your reasons.

PutDown · 05/06/2009 20:30

Unfortunately, the sad reality is we will have to see cuts in public spending, regardless of who gets in.
TBH cannot see David Cameron with his experience of the NHS with regard to his son cutting services that much.

Overmydeadbody · 05/06/2009 20:30

Is this all for definate or just going on what they did last time?

swiftyknickers · 05/06/2009 20:31

The civil service will be slashed in size and much will be privatised = unemployment.

Tax credits are to be abolished, I believe

FairLadyRantALot · 05/06/2009 20:32

800,000 children lifted out of relative poverty

would this have happened under the conservatives??

OP posts:
swiftyknickers · 05/06/2009 20:39

i doubt it

they dont care about poor people!!

(i know i sound childish!)

FuriousGeorge · 05/06/2009 20:41

I'll be pleased if they do.I know I'm in the minority on MN,but not everyone was over the moon when Labour won in 97.I can still remember the strikes,3 day weeks ect,and threats to nationalize the land.No way would I vote for them.
.

bumpsoon · 05/06/2009 20:43

Quite honestly ,i cant see that they would do a much worse job than labour have done already .Obviousley they would meddle in health and education as every new goverment has to when it first gains power . As for pensions ,i dont know about teachers pensions ,but in the health service changes have been taking place for some time now and continue to do so ,making a NHS pension worth far less than it was a few years ago . Its not like theres very much left to privatise is it ,oh except maybe schools and hospitals ,but oh yes the labout goverment are already going down that route already i believe . Mind you anyone who calls the current goverment 'labour' with a straight face needs their head examining

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 05/06/2009 20:43

hf128219 shouldn't have to explain if you don't tryingtobemarypoppins, cutting and pasting just shows that you did't know why you are dreading Labour coming in you are just parroting what you think you should.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 05/06/2009 20:44

Thanks for being honest Furious but what do you know they will do to improve the country - convince me!

OP posts:
MetalMummy · 05/06/2009 20:46

I have real concerns about what the conservatives would do with tax credits, without which my family would be screwed!

nancy75 · 05/06/2009 20:48

have they said they would abolish tax credits (have read lots of posts saying they will) all i can find is that they will make if fairer for married couples?

southeastastra · 05/06/2009 20:49

ive never understood why we cant just have different parties responsible for different issues.

like the green party could be in charge of the environment.

the tories in charge of schools

and labour in charge of employment

bumpsoon · 05/06/2009 20:49

If you can provide me with hard evidence to back up those 50 , tryingtobe ,and i was abale to deduce from that evidence that you were infact correct then maybe i would be happier to vote new labour ,as it is ,they simply stand as 50 statements .

tryingtobemarypoppins · 05/06/2009 20:50

librasbiscuitsoffortune what an unfortunate misunderstanding.

I cut and pasted the top 50 achievements of this govenment as people (like yourself it appears) seem to forget this. I am dreading a conservative govenment as I only have bad memories (as I have already said) of them and am asking if anyone can highlight any good points about the conservatives to worry me less.

OP posts:
hedgiemum · 05/06/2009 20:52

I agree with PutDown - we are in a huge amount of debt as a country and taxes will rise for everyone and spending have to be cut. Its not going to be a great decade ahead in the UK, whoever gets in. On this basis, YANBU.

For people in the lowest incomes, they will of course notice the public spending cuts the most as most reliant on them, and of course even slightly lower benefits or minimum wage will have a huge effect on these people. But ultimately all of us will be worse off, and this won't be the Conservatives fault imo, they aren't the ones who have got us into this frankly embarrassing level of debt.

I look forward to the Conservatives getting in and scrapping the ID card plan (which will be a colossal waste of money), but am hoping they scrap raising the inheritance tax threshold, that is a stupid plan when the country is so poor.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 05/06/2009 20:53

bumpsoon as a teacher I feel education is sooooooooooo much better than ever before. Schools have much better resources, are more inclusive etc etc. Nursery places speak for themselves, as does school fruit and sure start centres.
