To put my hair in bunches when I am in my 40s?

It's such a comfy hairstyle in hot weather. But are people going to think I am some sort of wierd girly twat who believes in fairies and has soft toys all over her bed?

Have put my hair in two (low) plaits today just for you

YanknCock · 01/06/2009 09:47

Just be careful if you do go out with bunches....the parting in your hair makes it more likely your scalp will get sunburned, and it's so painful! Also looks like giant chunks of dandruff when it starts peeling.

LadyAga · 01/06/2009 09:49

you should do whatever makes you happy.

who cares what strangers think of you, they're not important and if they want to make something of it then they really need to get a life.

Love these links! Let rasputin's be a warning...

Poppity · 01/06/2009 10:01

I have my hair in plaits today, with a scarf wrapped around my head and them poking out underneath.

I also use my DDs hair grips etc if they're all I can find.

I wear it in low bunches too, I find a ponytail really uncomfortable, and it annoys me driving when it rubs on the headrest.

I have mary janes, and a smocked dress.

I like them

foreveroptimistic · 01/06/2009 10:18

You will look slightly deranged and I can assure you it is not a flattering look!

branflake81 · 01/06/2009 10:25

I am in my twenties and wear bunches when I go running to stop my hair falling in my face. I do quite secretly like them but my mother scoffs quite openly and I am scared she may be saying what everyone else thinks

TsarChasm · 01/06/2009 10:29

Er.. I'm in the 'dont touch that look with a bargepole' camp too, I'm afraid.

You will look like something out of Blue Remembered Hills.

HuffwardlyRudge · 01/06/2009 10:36

I wore 2 plaits yesterday and got more compliments on how fab I was looking than ever before. People kept asking if I'd lost weight or been on holiday.

I was channeling hippyish native American chic though, rather than Looby-Loo.

CJCregg · 01/06/2009 10:43

I have just tried it ... and decided I just can't do it (am in my 40s). I look a bit silly. But that's partly because my hair has just enough annoying kink to make it go up a bit at the ends, so it looks too much like Pippi Longstocking.

If it didn't, though, I would definitely go for it.

Am tempted to keep them in for school pick-up, see if I can spot any other MNers ...

Ponytail- low- fine, high- no
Bunches- low, just- just ok- high- absolutely not
Pigtails- loon

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 02/06/2009 21:22

ladyaga i like your name and style

pinkstarfish · 02/06/2009 21:49

Do it! If you feel comfortable with the way you look it will shine out of you and you'll look fab I bet!

I'm 24 and often plat my hair in 2 (piggy tails down each side), and from personal and prolonged experience, quiet frankly, men love it!

ThePhantomPlopper · 02/06/2009 21:54

Not a good look on anyone over 6.

FairLadyRantALot · 02/06/2009 22:00

think age etc. has nothing to do with it....all depend if they suit you, surely....
if you like em...than sod others....life is to short to worry about what others think...

1dilemma · 02/06/2009 22:01

I have been wanting to do this recently in fact if I could find another hair toggle I would!

SallyJayGorce · 02/06/2009 22:02

I am 86 and always have bunches. With little glowsticks stuck through them and small bells off a Lindt reindeer.

pointydog · 02/06/2009 22:06

weird and girly, deff.

sallyjay, zoom on!

AnarchyAunt · 02/06/2009 22:07

I often wear mine in low bunches when its hot - I have dreadlocks that nearly reach my waist and they are very hot on the back of my neck.

DD (6) says it looks pretty

FfreckleFface · 02/06/2009 22:14

I wear bunches and plaits quite often, and I'm 27. I certainly don't believe in fairies, no soft toys on my bed, and I hope I am not a girly twat.

Started doing it in year 11, just to wind people up, and then found that it was a useful way of taming my crazy long, thick, curly hair, so adopted it as my style of choice for hot or wet weather.

pointydog · 02/06/2009 22:17

lol @ people wearing bunches to wind others up

SerendipitousHarlot · 02/06/2009 22:45

I wanted bunches the other day... I took 2 bobbles to work and started doing it when I got there. My colleague (also my gbf) shouted 'OH MY GOD, SOMEONE CALL THE FASHION POLICE! HARLOT THINKS SHE'S BRITNEY SPEARS!'

So I would say that would be a no

SolidGoldBrass · 03/06/2009 01:21

I think I am possibly hardened by years of abuse over my sartorial/hairstyle choices anyway...

Gateau · 03/06/2009 12:24

Nowt wrong with it; I think it's quite sweet.
If you start scorning people for having bunches you may as well say women over a certain age shouldn't have long hair.
