Grendels - i would say that's healthy and not really a lot. You'd def burn more calories than you took in.

if you exercise like a demon you can pretty much eat what you want without worry

FairLadyRantALot · 31/05/2009 15:13

lol goes to show Grendels, that your perception of "a lot" is very different to my perception of "a lot"...

FuriousGeorge - bless ya, thanks for asking. I did, a friend recommended one in Harley Street (I say! ). I went once and then realised that I might be preg. So I haven't been back yet until it's confirmed - seeing as I was forking out the money to improve my fertility, there seemed no point!

Am pissed off that I still don't know for sure whether I'm pg or not, but will now cart my not-as-fat-as-last-year-ass off to the doctors this week and pee in a pot.

laweaselmys · 31/05/2009 15:40

On the subject of alcohol - I basically drink nothing but water (because when I was a kid juice was an extravagance and water was more or less free lol!) Just drinking water cuts out loads of calories.

laweaselmys · 31/05/2009 15:46

What I would roughly eat in a day (from yesterday)

breakfast, full bowl of cereal (any kind) with semi-skimmed milk.

Snack probably a cereal bar, a portion of fruit and a pack of crisps.

Lunch is very salady atm because it's hot, so a sandwich with spinach, lettuce, tomato, ham and brie. Some cherry toms, a lump of cucumber, some mini picnic eggs, satay sticks/pepperoni.

Snack ice cream! Sweets, more crisps or a cereal bar.

Dinner hot meal, yesterday was bacon and chicken with pasta and pesto meat was fried with onion and peppers. Maybe some ice cream or fruit for desert but don't usually have any.

On a bad day, I will eat no breakfast, a couple of portions of fruit a big bag of doritos/sensations/popcorn some cereal bars etc during the day and then have a proper evening meal later.

Neither variation has any effect on my weight (BMI about 16-17), but I try and go for the healthier version because I am aware that just because I am not putting on weight doesn't mean I'm not damaging my insides.

2rebecca · 31/05/2009 16:35

I'm slim and don't diet. If I ate the same stuff and didn't exercise though I'd be overweight. I run or cycle 2-4 times a week. Today I've been running round hills for a couple of hours in a competition.
I also tend to eat fruit if I'm hungry between meals or at the end of a meal, and don't eat many biscuits, cakes puddings or ice creams as I don't have much of a sweet tooth.
I don't really get confort eating. If I'm miserable I listen to music, read a book, go for a walk or phone/talk to someone. Eating something because you're miserable seems strange to me. I don't usually enjoy eating if I'm not hungry.
When I came back from my competition I was starving though and wolfed down left over curry and rice and some risotto with chilli!

Fairynufff · 31/05/2009 18:23

A friend revealed to me when I asked how she managed to stayed so slim that she lived in a perpetual state of anxiety! (despite having a to-die-for life). When I feel depressed about having to go to the fat clothes section I remind myself that I love food, drink and am content with my life.

I've come to the conclusion that if you love food and you have a fairly sedentary life you're screwed...

sherby · 31/05/2009 18:41

8 st 5ft 6"

I do eat small portions and don't 'have a bit of everything' eg at a bbq yesterday most people had some pasta salad and meat and a burger and corn and then dessert plus alcohol, I had a burger and some corn

I don't carry on eating when I am not hungry

Active and fidgety

I don't eat/snack as soon as I feel just a little bit hungry, I can wait for an hr or so

Pass dessert up 70% of the time

Pig out occasionally but then eat normally for a week or so

Celery · 31/05/2009 18:48

I was overweight for all of my adult life, fluctuating between a size 14-18, until I lost a lot of weight three years ago and went down to a size 10, where I have remained since. I don't diet anymore, or consciously think about what I eat. I know now though that my appetite is much much smaller than it was before. I eat everything that I used to eat, but in smaller quantities. My meals are probably half the size that they used to be. Before, if we went out for a meal, I would easily eat three courses, now I struggle to get through two. That's it really. Smaller portions long term.

TheProvincialLady · 31/05/2009 19:15

Well today I ate

A bowl of muesli with soya milk
A glass of grapefruit juice
A bar of Ritter Sport marzipan chocolate
A bakewell slice
A big bowl of pasta and smoked tofu salad
An egg and vegan mayonnaise sandwich

DH is just making me a pitta and nut burger and I am having some more juice. I normally eat much more fruit and veg than this

I literally have not sat down today except for the sitting down bits at church and to BF DS2. Even when I was MNing earlier I was standing up with DS2 in the sling!

I have about half a stone to lose to get back to my usual weight of about 7 stone (am 5'2") and I am not doing any dieting, just breastfeeding and running 3 times a week.

lou33 · 31/05/2009 20:53

today i have had a huge bowl of chili and rice, a snickers a twix, an 8oz burger with new potatoes butter and beans, some chili flavoured crisps, a nectarine, fruit juice and a can of coke, and i am about to have a couple of clementines

i am sure i have had some other things too but i forget

FuriousGeorge · 31/05/2009 20:58

Mrs MH -Whoohooo!Excellent news.I'm off to eat some giant toblerone in celebration.Harley Street though-get you!

MrsMerryHenry · 31/05/2009 21:11

I must say I have tasted the heady delights of Harley Street medical care in the past...but that was in the days when I had a career that came with health insurance. I'm strictly NHS all the way, now (except when sticking needles into myself).

Hold your Whoohoos, though. I've had three neg pregnancy tests but lots of symptoms. Either this baby is wearing an invisibility cloak or this is one hell of a phantom pregnancy. Still. Don't let anything put you off scoffing your chocolate! (as long as you put on lots of weight as a result! )

FuriousGeorge · 31/05/2009 21:26

I'm halfway through my scoffing already. If it helps,dd1 caused me several neg tests and I had no symptoms whatsoever. It took about 3 weeks to get a positive test.

I'll cross everything for you.Good luck!

MrsMerryHenry · 31/05/2009 21:29

Thanks Georgie! It's always heartening to hear stories similar to mine. I do feel like something's going on in my womb, but don't want to think about it too much.

ILoveDolly · 31/05/2009 21:31

Figeting is a factor!! I knew I'd read about it somewhere....

"Interesting..www.newscientist.com/article/dn11998-fidgeting-gene-found-for-weight-loss.html"

ILoveDolly · 31/05/2009 21:32

Thats so annoying

it should look like

ILoveDolly · 31/05/2009 21:33

Shock Blush

MrsMerryHenry · 31/05/2009 21:53

I've always been so smug about the fact that I don't fidget.

OrmIrian · 01/06/2009 07:51

Well I am reluctantly back on a diet today. Because I have had to finally admit that my eating is out of control and I am eating for all the wrong reasons. I don't want to and for a long time I did get my eating to a sensible level but I have no choice right now. I use a diet like a metaphorical slap round the head.

Give it a few months and things will improve. I will also keep running a lot.

smellen · 01/06/2009 08:06

I think genes play a lot in the equation too. I am tall with a BMI of around 19/20, so a bit on the skinny side, but I eat what I like, and don't do any exercise as such (although I don't sit down much with two LOs). Most of my family are tall and slim too, but no gym-bunnies.

Also think that one person's over-indulgence is another's light snack. E.g. I always have a couple of biscuits with a cup of tea, but have a friend who can't sit down without most of the packet. Other people I know don't have any snacks and still carry more weight. So many variables I guess.

I fear I might be a TOFI (Thin on the Outside, Fat on the Inside), which is not particularly healthy. As soon as I get some more time to myself, I do plan to try and do some cardio-vascular activities, and try to tone up the baby-belly.

sweetkitty · 01/06/2009 08:12

I was a size 12 preDDs and am now a size 8 BMI about 20.

I used to work in the food industry, had loads of free samples, ate out twice a week at least, sat at a desk eating loads.

Nowadays I have 3 under 5 and I don't sit down and the critical thing is I only eat when I am hungry. I just don't obsess about food like I used to, I do have a chocolate bar every night though that's my one sin.

teafortwo · 01/06/2009 09:22

rubberduck - It is funny this "French women are so skinny" image.

Yes - Rich Parisians are ofen skinny. Lots have personal trainers and because they have someone helping around the house and important parties to go to they have the time and the social pressures to stay very thin. They do look amazing - litle, fine doll like figures that are toned, beautiful, swishy and always dressed to perfection. But I am sure rich women in London look just as fab! It is a money thing not specifically a French thing as lots of these women are not French by origin.

Lots of French women are normal sized - like fairladyrntalot - you are like me (I am not French but live in France) not fat, not skinny, just normal - which is right - you look healthy and lovely! (Wow nice hair by the way - tres chic!).

Why are lots of French people 'normal sized' - I think there is simply a culure of eating more 'real food' and less snacking happens. Even six years ago I would have mentioned the smoking and wonder if it effects weight but - actually there has been a revolution in smoking. Everyone is stopping... and staying normal sized.

Yet, in France there are huge problems with obesity too; and like in the UK the problems are worse in poor and deprived areas.

DH was in California recently - he said that it is a truly health concious culure - really healthy - not skinny people but fit and well people around the place and of all social classes eating fresh, good food and playing lots of sports - it is like they are on the other side of the 'MacDonalds effect' and here in France we are just slipping into it .

teafortwo · 01/06/2009 09:39

I realised I didn't mention that the beautiful swishy ladies of course can afford to buy very good quality healthy food... while MacDonalds cost less than a couple of drinks in a Parisian cafe - let alone lunch.

Also I realise - like a bad A-level sudent I didn't actually answer the ops question - sorry about that!

YANBU - I find it interesting to see what oher people eat... not just skinny people all people - food is such an important part of culure it is very interesing to know what everyone out there is really eating and drinking.
