lou33.. I am so on your wave length.. I had managed to put on the stone I needed.. but am loosing it fast due to stress at the moment.( i like to have the extra stone on to be able to loose IYSWIM)
I feel full after a 1 slice of bread sarnie, and I don't feel hungry at all.
if your trying to put weight on milky drinks often were recommended to me by GP.. and that really helped.

urm thin people really don't eat that much IMO.. and totally agree with NKF

Riven.men don't really cpount anyway, seeing that they have the unfair advantage of having naturally more muscle mass....

Funny thing is, people mention stress, and how easy they loose when stress...see...I eat all the wrong crap when stressed, so, tend to put on weight...sigh...

Erm

-I eat quite a lot but its very balanced. Might have a chocolate snack in the evening but it's after a salad dinner

  • I don't drive so walk everywhere
  • have 4 small children to run around after
  • have never dieted I think dieting really buggers up your metabolisn unless its eating slightly less crap, slightly smaller portions and xcersing more which is what I do post children

-realising that clothes size and weight doesnt reflect on how you look. I'm a size 12 top and a 14/16 bottom yet I'm not large and a friend called me skinny yesterday as I have wide hips (the bones not extra flab) I have a flat stomach (normally as hade a baby 6 weeks ago so nearlythere)

bronze · 31/05/2009 13:11

Oh and some people gain weight when stressed. I'm one of those who loses it

laweaselmys · 31/05/2009 13:19

I have a speedy metabolism. (Quite genuinely, I eat twice as much as my DP so he can vouch lol!)

But it is heavily helped on by the fact that I am a natural fidget (can burn an extra 500cals a day) walk everywhere because I can't drive, and generally eat three healthy meals (which doesn't mean a bloomin' salad! It means correct proportions of meat, tatties/pasta/rice and veggies) all of which increases my metabolism even if I eat a lot of regular unhealthy snacks.

I have noticed when chunkier friends are dieting they seem to eat larger portion sizes than they realise, even when they say they have made it smaller it is exactly the same size!

forehead · 31/05/2009 13:20

I am slim but i dont't go to the gym as i think that gyms look like torture chambers. I am very active and wake up every morning at 5am to clean my house before going to work. As a result, i have a very clean home and a very trim figure (sorry for showing off)so i kill two birds with one stone.
My dsis used to struggle with her weight until she started walking to work 3 times a week. She lost a lot of weight despite eating more.

ILoveDolly · 31/05/2009 13:37

Glad to see a thread where slim people who eat normally are not being vilified.
I find it hard sometimes as I get a lot of comments like 'But, I bet you won't eat anything when you're at home' when I have a regular lunch at work. I'm sure if you are overweight you might get rude comments made about you, but I find that women who are unhappy with their size can be very judgemental and bitchy.

I walk everywhere (due to being a wuss and hating driving ) and I find that I lose weight really far too quickly if I get ill or stressed so i have to keep on top of regular large meals. Also, I have irritable bowel so I probably have some sort of malabsorbtion issue. I'm not really a massive snacker and don't drink very much.

As I am pg now I am trying to eat more because I was asked to put on a stone by my doctor last time and I am preempting that second time around. More cakes, please.

JonAndHate · 31/05/2009 13:40

I've always been wary of posting on threads like this and come across as smug but here goes:

I'm constantly snacking on crap (mainly pick and mix stuff) and have always been skinny (size 6-8).

But I always feel full about halfway through a proper plate of food. It's like my brain equates half of food on plate finished with being full.

When I'm stressed I eat even less real food and more sugar. I guess my metabolism speeds up when I'm stressed and makes up for it.

I like healthy and light food and dislike stodgy and fatty meals.

I noticed that I started putting on a bit of weight, being less toned and getting cellulite since last year (I'm 26 now). Since I'm a couch potato and had gone from a very active job (loads of walking) to an office job I started cycling to work and things are back to normal.

My mother and sister are very slim as well we've always ate healthy food as kids. We used to have a food wheel poster in the kitchen [odd family emoticon]

ILoveDolly · 31/05/2009 13:48

Yeah my mum is teeny - I think that rather than genetics it is a habituation thing. if your mum eats small portions, she gives you small portions, you feel more full after less food etc etc

FairLadyRantALot · 31/05/2009 13:54

hmmm..my mum used to be tiny, and never eat much, she still eats hardly anything now, but is rounder now...not massively overweight, but rounder....
so...not sure about the theory....

OP posts:
ILoveDolly · 31/05/2009 14:00

Yeah but rounder - there is a factor in aging where we all go a bit rounder. I won't take a punt on how old your mum is but mine is nearly 60 and is teeny FOR HER AGE, but definately a lot more round in the tum area that she was 30 years ago. I think we have to accept that the aging process also affects our body. Unless the knife is involved....!

bronze · 31/05/2009 14:11

forgot to say another thing, I rarely drink . I'm sure a lot of people put on weight through drinking and dont realise

nickytwotimes · 31/05/2009 14:18

As someone who has been varying weights, I have found that when I am slim, I am used to eating less and therefore satisfied with less food than when I am heavier.
For example I recently lost a stone snd I certainly not hungry, but I eat a lot less than I did 6 mths ago. The first few weeks I did feel a bit peckish but my body has adjusted.

I must add that I am still eating plenty - before I was eating too much iyswim? Your stomach adjusts to what you give it.
And I agree with the booze. Might as well eat a pile of cakes as drink a bottle of wine tbh.

JonAndHate · 31/05/2009 14:18

Women tend to put on weight in the tummy area after the menopause. There's a rise in the rates of heart disease in post menopausal women because of this.

Thinking about my lifestyle/eating habits I've come to the conclusion that eating little and often (I'm forever grazing - can't go more than 2 hours without eating and put on weight when I eat more or less often) makes your metabolism more efficient. Otherwise your body thinks you're starving and everything you eat gets stored as it is not sure if/when more food is gonna come along.

I also think that depriving myself of foods or craving foods means that when I actually do eat them, I eat more than I would if hadn't been craving them.

Like others have said I agree that what you eat, why you eat, how you eat and how much/how you eat affects your weight. In addition to activity levels (not just traditional exercise at the gym).

JonAndHate · 31/05/2009 14:20

You're right bronze, I hardly drink any alcohol.

nickytwotimes · 31/05/2009 14:20

Oh, and yes, I am heavier than I was in my yoof. Definitely put weight on more quickly, but I htink it is probably better tbh. Very skinny women can look too scrawny as they get older imo. You need a bit of fat to puff out the wrinkles.

JonAndHate · 31/05/2009 14:21

Gawd, shoot me now. Forgot my [fucking smug emoticon]

Nancy66 · 31/05/2009 14:23

French women smoke like bloody chimneys - that's how they stay thin.

TheProvincialLady · 31/05/2009 14:24

Yes I agree Bronze, a lot of people drink a lot of calories.

nickytwotimes · 31/05/2009 14:27

True Nanacy.
I was skinny as a rake when I smoked.
I stank, coughed and had no energy or money though. Much better to have a little bit of 'give' imo.

nickytwotimes · 31/05/2009 14:27

NANACY?
Sorry.
Nancy.
Ahem

Nancy66 · 31/05/2009 14:34

plus you end up with the face of an old hag...skinny one though!

Lazycow · 31/05/2009 14:34

See this is why I love the web. We talk about stuff people never do in RL. BalloonSlayer- Yes they really do. In my case I often eat a family tub of ice cream and can do thatsveral nights in a row. I often also eat lots of other junk not just that. I also eat big meals.

It has been very useful reading all these posts from slim people as it helps to understand what 'normal' is and not much of 'normal' involves being particularly restrictive or overindulging too much. I have spent so many years alternating between dieting and bingeing that I really have no clear idea what normal eating is any more.

GrendelsMum · 31/05/2009 14:52

Someone asked to see what other people eat, so here's what I've eaten for the last few days. (I'm size 8) Basically, I eat a lot, but I'm very very active (cycle commute to work, and garden on my days off). I also seem to have a bizarre obsession with creme fraiche.
