Leaving plumber alone in house

cornflakegirl · 28/05/2009 16:50

We're having our bathroom redone, and it is DS' birthday in the middle of the work period. We're planning to take him out for the whole day. Would you be okay about leaving a plumber alone in your house for a whole day? I'm assuming that people where both partners work full-time do this all the time, and that I'm just over-thinking the risk?

Depends on a) what you think the risks are (do you have lots of valuable items in your house?!) and b) whether you know this plumber or not, I suppose ...

cornflakegirl · 28/05/2009 17:04

Nope, nothing worth stealing. We don't know the plumber, although he seems like a good bloke.

I always try to get out of the house if I have workmen in, never had a problem.

RedCharityBonney · 28/05/2009 17:06

I do too, moshie. If we had a lot of stuff which we were very protective of I might not, but we don't

crokky · 28/05/2009 17:07

I have done this - I think the main risk with it is that they come up against something unexpected and make a decision themselves without asking you. If you leave them, make sure you leave them a mobile phone number if they need to ask you anything like that.

The worst thing that has happened to me leaving people in my house is that the last bloke I had in filled my cardboard and plastic recycling bin with landfill rubbish .

I suppose it might be a consideration if you have loads and loads of valuable stuff - we have nothing (apart from toys and children's stuff) so I never worry about that sort of thing.

BalloonSlayer · 28/05/2009 17:52

I never worry about stuff getting nicked. I mean, how much will your bathroom be costing you?

I do sometimes worry about leaving the computer on in case someone starts looking at dodgy sites on my PC. So I turn it off. That's the extent of my security. (They could just turn it on again of course)

nametaken · 28/05/2009 17:55

LOL I always leave workmen alone in the house. If anything ever goes missing (which it never has) it's gonna be pretty obvious who'se stolen it

rubyslippers · 28/05/2009 17:57

well, the only thing i would consider is if he needs to leave the house at any point - will it then be secure?

I wouldn't worry about theft - as a PP said it would be fairly obvious who had done it

screamingabdab · 28/05/2009 17:57

I leave them alone

Apart from the Electrician . He's dreamy ............

sherby · 28/05/2009 17:58

My DH is a plumber, he said don't worry people leave him in the house all the time

He won't wank in your drawers or anything

sherby · 28/05/2009 18:05

In all seriousness, DH worked at a firm where a bloke was sacked because the customer came home early and the plumber was butt naked standing up in the living room wanking to the owners porn

bigTillyMint · 28/05/2009 18:07

Grin Grin Grin

nametaken · 28/05/2009 18:07

Oh, my God I thought workman wanking in your knicker drawer and pissing in your sink was an urban myth.

Obviously not.

Haribolicious · 28/05/2009 19:37

Have to agree with the possibility of drawer wanking...friend of a friend of a friend [blah, blah] who is a plumber and another who is a painter/decorator has said that they do this and often steal knickers

We always give workmen a wide bearth but never leave them on their own in the house!

cornflakegirl · 28/05/2009 20:33

rubyslippers - we can leave him the key to the front door, but not the deadlock, so it'll be secure enough for the day, but a copy of the key wouldn't do him any good.

pretty sure no-one's going to steal my scabby fat girl pants!

OP posts:
sherby · 28/05/2009 21:53

DH assures me they don't piss in the sink

Its the cold water storage tank more often than not

QOD · 28/05/2009 21:57

I lost my passports, birth certs & wedding one too when we left someone (sometwo in fact) alone in the house.

IlanaK · 28/05/2009 22:08

We do this all the time with a builder we know well and trust totally. I also live in a portered building so he can pick the keys up from the porters and lock up and leave them with the porters. But in any other circustances - no. Especially if you do not actually know them.

haven't read all the responses but I;ve done this tonnes of times. including going on holiday while we had a house full of builders. I just don't see it as high risk at all. They're just not going to knick big stuff like the the lap-top or telly and I've got nothing else remotely worth knicking. I think the only risk is that they root through my underwear and have a laugh putting my frillies on their head. and if that's what they're into I really couldn't give a monkeys.

hatwoman · 28/05/2009 23:00

[returns having read the other posts] god I'm naive. here I am talking about knickers on their heads and you lot are talking about drawer wanking. lawks.

ninedragons · 29/05/2009 01:44

I wouldn't. Not since a plumber stole my eternity ring, which was in a dish by the sink.

brightongirldownunder · 29/05/2009 02:22

Jesus, ND - was that in Balmain?

ninedragons · 29/05/2009 09:19

Nah, Hong Kong. Called the police and there was nothing they can do, but your insurance is void because the person was in your house with your permission.
