my son likes to dress up in his spidermam costume when ever we go anywhere, for example publix, or the mall. So recently i decided not to allow him to wear it out in public anymore and he just wouldn't stop crying i dont know what to do

YANBU what difference does it make if he is wearing a spiderman costume? It is probably just a phase and he will stop wanting to wear it in a few weeks anyway. My DS now 5 wore his everywhere for a few weeks last year he was happy and it didnot do him any harm.

Martharocks1011 · 21/05/2009 03:50

well its not that its doing him harm its just that last time he ran in to traffic and almost accidentally and i never been more scared in my life but i don't want his young spirit and joy to go away. just making sure not AIBU

Why does it matter what he wears? I was going to ask how old he is but I don't see that it makes a difference whether he is 3 or 8 or 15.

My DS wore his giraffe costume to the airport the other day. When people commented (in a nice way), he proudly unzipped it to show them that he had his pyjamas on underneath.

I admit, I was initially a bit embarrassed but who cares? Everybody smiled and DS was happy. No problem.

SuperBunny · 21/05/2009 03:55

How did his Spiderman outfit make him run into traffic? Surely that is a different issue. This makes no sense.

Martharocks1011 · 21/05/2009 04:03

Its not that im embarrassed its just that what if he ever accidentally again????? what should i do then? plus im sure he is gonna grow out of the phase

Yabu. This is a phase you'll look back in ten years' time with fondness. Plus it's all ammunition for his wedding day. Make sure you get pictures!

The only problem, if you decide to let him wear it, is how to backtrack without losing authority.

TooTicky · 21/05/2009 04:26

Both of my sons had intense dressing up phases. They are 10 and 7. The 7yo still dresses up quite a bit, the 10yo has retained his flamboyancy.

i think it is fantastic, do let him carry on.

Hmm
savoycabbage · 21/05/2009 05:52

Anyway, yes YABU. Children like to dress up. Let him wear it as much as is practical. It won't last forever.

leothelioness · 21/05/2009 05:56

sorry I meant YABU.

leothelioness · 21/05/2009 06:17

superbunnyawsomeface are u for real.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 21/05/2009 06:42

Why are you embaressed? If I see a parent out with a child who is in fancy dress I never think "bad parent", it just makes me smile. He is not hurting anyone. I think YABU.

messymissy · 21/05/2009 06:56

I too think its cute and good for them to get to express themselves in this way.

my dd loves her new swimming costume and for a week has worn it over all her clothes, everywhere. The sheer effort and determination she shows struggling into it over her clothes is worth letting her wear it! I just say she loves her costume to anyone who asks and her beaming smile and pointing to the little fish on it says the rest!

From what i've seen from other children, they soon grow out of it, but meanwhile its great and i think it helps them assert their emerging individuality.

messymissy · 21/05/2009 06:58

As for where you go now, maybe have a chat and agree that he can wear it to certain places but not others, that way, you both win.

flamingobingo · 21/05/2009 07:09

YABU Spiderman costumes don't make people run into roads.

They do no harm and make a little person (and all the older people they meet along the way) very happy.

Stop being mean, and wierd too

BiscuitStuffer · 21/05/2009 09:00

I think what the OP is saying is that when he wears his spiderman outfit he THINKS he IS spiderman and it makes him think he's infallable hence the dashing out in to roads?

Let him wear it. I love it when mine go out in dressing-up clothes. I took my three year old Batman around some Roman remains a few months ago and it seemed to make everyone else smile as well.

harleyd · 21/05/2009 10:11

he accidentally what??
have i missed something

squeaver · 21/05/2009 10:14

Sorry but I don't understand, why would wearing it make him run into traffic??

The more he wears it, the quicker he'll grow out of this phase. And, seriously, what is the problem with it?

ramonaquimby · 21/05/2009 10:15

I have a mini snow white here. I hate the whole dressing up thing too, but she loves it. IT won't last. At least, I hope not.

squeaver · 21/05/2009 10:16

A friend of mine couldn't understand why her ds was so hot in bed. The she realised he was wearing his Spiderman costume under his school uniform which was under his pyjamas

PlumBumMum · 21/05/2009 10:19

Just let him my ds did this for months, then he moved on to iron man, before spider man it was buzz lightyear

Now dd2 has a Stephanie costume and she calls herself pinkie,

I just go with the flow, although it does worry me when ds asks when he will be allowed to climb walls or how do you make a power pack to fly?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 21/05/2009 10:25

I take my little Sportacus eveywhere!

He loves it, it makes others smile and we're all happy (apart from the fact that he can't go to the loo by himself when he's wearing it as it's a 1 piece suit!).

Pick your battles carefully!

As for the running out in the road - that can be tackled seperately
