£25 per person each way. Yippe, I thought. 200 quid to go skiing next Feb. TUrned out to be 600, after all the taxes, fees and farting about. Am furious. Bastards.

Not unreasonable but definitely naive

Hulababy · 18/05/2009 20:32

They are a nightmare. Their published prices are rarely anywhere near what the real price is. I think they, and some other budget arlines, got into trouble over this recently. I thought it wassupposed to be being stopped.

hobbgoblin · 18/05/2009 20:33

If you go to skyscanners.net the price includes tax. I do a comparison there first when booking. For next time!

sleepwhenidie · 18/05/2009 20:34

Naive I think - they charge for everything possible. An article I read recently compared ryanair/BA and the prices ended up being about £5 difference (BA more expensive) - however, you get allocated seats and free drinks with BA .

clam · 18/05/2009 20:35

Am feeling a little as I actually spent about 4 hours comparing and still managed to balls it up.

Naive, I think - Isn't this the airline that actually charges passengers to check-in at the desks ??

MaDuggar · 18/05/2009 20:36

I have flown with ryan air for 1p

6p came off my debit card, 1p each for 3 of us, each way.

So it is possible.

Thunderduck · 18/05/2009 20:36

Naive.

bumpsoon · 18/05/2009 20:37

very naive

ellingwoman · 18/05/2009 20:37

I know the feeling. £12.50 to Denmark for 5 turned into £500. Some people manage to get real cheapies though because they're always banging on about them. It's just us who can't find them!

clam · 18/05/2009 20:37

They also charge you (not as much though) to checkin online. So how else are you supposed to do it? It's hardly an optional extra!

OP posts:
ellingwoman · 18/05/2009 20:38

Not you MaDuggar

thisisyesterday · 18/05/2009 20:39

oh it pisses me right off too. had similar experience with easyjet recently!

have vowed to only use BA from now on.

MaDuggar · 18/05/2009 20:39

Its ok ellingwoman

I had some helpfull people tell me how to do it, its not something thats very obvious!

It is possible...if you get one of their special offers, check in online and carry only hand luggage (and no children, it's great when it costs more for a baby to sit on your lap than you paid for your seat!)

MaDuggar · 18/05/2009 20:42

some tips ...

use an electron debit card - no fees

take off insurance

take hand luggage only - no fees

online check-in (though when i did it last year, check-in was free)

clam · 18/05/2009 20:43

AND I got stung for the return one-way flight (to a different UK airport), which was charged in Euros - more expensive than the published £ flight on a normal round-trip.

OP posts:
clam · 18/05/2009 20:44

Hand-luggage only? Skiing? I wish!
And now they charge for online check-in too. As I said, it's hardly optional. What is one supposed to do?

Portofino · 18/05/2009 20:48

Thye USED to be great and we did many cheap flights, even since dd. In the good old days though there were no charges for luggage, online check in etc and parents with small children were automatically let on the plane first. Same goes for EasyJet. These days i would not touch them with a barge pole!

I looked recently and their FREE flights worked out at hundreds of quid after you paid all the additional crap.

Hopefully more and more people will vote with their feet and they will realise that new business model is not good....

MaDuggar · 18/05/2009 20:48

lol i know, my tips will only suit some people, i was lucky i wasnt travelling far or for long.

lizziemun · 18/05/2009 21:40

Can i just add Ryan air announce (last week)as of the 25/6 May if you do not have a copy of your email boarding pass they will charge you £40.00 for a copy. You also have to pay a £5 online booking in fee as they will no longer do it at the airport.

MorrisZapp · 18/05/2009 22:13

Legally if they penalise you for not doing something (online checkin) then they can't charge it as an extra, it has to be factored into actual fare.

Was in the paper at the weekend. Ryanair on v thin legal ice with many of their sharp charging practices.
