AIBU to think our accountant is a right cheeky *%$£?!

Had an email in work yesterday morning from our accountant in the office. He is getting married in June (common knowledge in work) but has not invited anyone from work (fair enough by all means).

However, in his email that he's sent everyone in the office, he said that he would appreciate any financial donations as a good will gesture for his wedding and that to save us bother, he is willing to deduct a chosen amount straight from our wage package and transfer the money into his account as he's doing the wages this month.

AIBU to think this is one of, if not THE, most shockingly rude things someone has ever suggested, at the fact he's not invited us then goes ahead to ask us for money?!

...and for the record, DH and I were in fact going to give him an M&S voucher, although now I don't think we will.

OMG How rude ! YANBU

coppertop · 07/05/2009 11:00

YANBU. The cheeky bugger.

mylifemykids · 07/05/2009 11:03

Is that true?!! OMG he's gonna get some stick for that surely?!

cuntish · 07/05/2009 11:05

What a twat. Pity the woman he is marrying

stripeypineapple · 07/05/2009 11:06

He must, surely, be joking?

islandofsodor · 07/05/2009 11:06

WHAT!!!!!!!!!

How cheeky, that is SO not on.

What do your bosses think about this?

Nekabu · 07/05/2009 11:08

I don't see how he can do that. Wouldn't it be that before the money ends up in your bank then it is the company's money? So if he takes some before it gets to you, he's taking it from the company rather than from you which could lead to all sorts of complications.

Sounds very dodgy to me and I bet whomever does the company accounts would scream their socks off if they heard about it. But as for the sheer cheek - in a class of it's own!

hereidrawtheline · 07/05/2009 11:09

That is horrible and just wrong wrong wrong and even surely illegal wrt working ethics???????

pinkstarfish · 07/05/2009 11:11

mylifemykids yes it's true, no word of a lie.

stripeypineapple the more I think about it, the more I'd almost expect it from him. He's bit of a slacker, always trying to fob off his work on the new members of staff, taking pro-longer dinner breaks etc...he's bit of an arse really.

One of the girls showed the email to the boss, he rolled his eyes and said it was an optional donation.

MEN?!

There is something horribly sinister about that.

Twims · 07/05/2009 11:13
Shock
WorzselMummage · 07/05/2009 11:13

nothing to say but

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 07/05/2009 11:13

UNBELIEVABLE. YANBU, obv.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 07/05/2009 11:14

must be a joke

whoisasking · 07/05/2009 11:15

I am laughing my head off! You've got to admire his balls (no pun intended)

ZacharyQuack · 07/05/2009 11:16

Are you sure he's not joking?

I would reply and say "no thank you, although I wish you and your new wife all the best, I need all of my paycheck"

If you have an HR dept, I would forward them the email with a note saying "I assume he is joking, but I feel uneasy that the person who is responsible for the payroll is talking about taking deductions without our consent".

paisleyleaf · 07/05/2009 11:17

I can imagine it as a joke
but that's just.......just........(I'm at a loss)

QueentessentialShadow · 07/05/2009 11:19

Goodness, you need to refuse this in email, as he may take a non reply as a consent.

I would kick up a stink. What he proposes is shocking!

WowOoo · 07/05/2009 11:20

What a complete arse. Hope he gets sod all for his rudeness.

mychildrenarebarmy · 07/05/2009 11:23

Surely he is not serious?!

I personally would reply telling him that you and your husband had been planning to give him and his new wife something but now in light of his extreme rudeness you have changed your minds and decided instead to give him nothing at all.

lucky1979 · 07/05/2009 11:27

It sounds like humour fallen flat to me, don't think it's legal even if the company would let him.

YorkshireRose · 07/05/2009 11:38

I am a chartered accountant working in business and I would expect to be sacked if I proposed deducting money directly from employees wages and paying it into my own account.

He should be disciplined for even suggesting this as it betrays a worryingly lax attitude towards employees pay. I would be uneasy if this joker was processing my pay and had access to my confidential details.

Also disappointing that your boss does not take it seriously. Complain to HR and demand that someone deals with this properly.

Arcadie · 07/05/2009 11:39

No WAY! Anyone at work you can report him to? The idea that someone so truly dodgy can have a say over what gets paid into your bank account makes me shiver.

Mummyfor3 · 07/05/2009 11:41

Surely there are laws against this kind of thing??!

I like the idea of forwarding his mail to HR... [evil emoticon][cackling laugh]
