I've been tossing and turning all night as i've got a bad infection near my nail on my ring finger.
Had to take painkillers just to get to sleep.
Ring my local surgery and they say they can't fit me in.
Its bright red and throbbing with a nasty yellow bit and blue edge to it.
I'm just going to see how it goes, but if you were me, would you burst it?
I've put a plaster on it and am waiting for it to pop!
I will go to casualty if i see any red lines of course.
Could a Pharmacist do anything? Or maybe i could ask the vet? Better chance of getting seen ti

Go to a pharmacist.

They will know how to help it start to clear up or if you need antibiotics.

Lizzylou · 30/04/2009 11:40

I would burst it, but I love stuff like that
Pop into the chemists and speak to a pharmacist?

Could you try an NHS walk-in centre?

for you. Your local surgery should have appointments available for emergencies such as this--the whole point being so you don't have to use A&E for minor stuff. (Though when you are in such pain I'm sure it doesn't feel minor!)

Wouldn't burst it. Would get yourself to a walk-in centre ASAP in case the infection is spreading and you need treatment.

www.nhs.uk/servicedirectories/Pages/serviceSearch.aspx Walk-ins are under 'Emergencies and Urgent Care'. Hope there is one near you.

Saltire · 30/04/2009 11:43

At least you have got the chnace of one next Wednesday. If I call today and ask for one I will be offered 14thMay. I won't be able to make one on the 12th, or the 21st. it wil be the 14th.

Anyway, try going to pharmacist - they should be able to advise if you can put anything on it

WorzselMummage · 30/04/2009 11:45

pu in in relly hot water then stick a pin in it !

hester · 30/04/2009 11:47

I really would go along to an NHS Walk In Centre.

Ripeberry · 30/04/2009 11:50

My nearest walk-in center is over 25 miles away! I think i'll speak to the pharmacist.
Thanks for your help

Phone the surgery and says its an emergency!

weblette · 30/04/2009 12:34

Had one of those last year - vvv painful. Get a nurse appointment if you can, she'll be able to deal with it - it'll probably need to be lanced.

MayorNaze · 30/04/2009 12:49

go to pharmacy.

or (and you didn't hear this from me) wait til this evening and go to the out of hours gp clinic

stickylittlefingers · 30/04/2009 13:01

what about calling nhs direct? I always found them veryhelpful (but possibly lots of people are rining about swineflu? I dunno)

Ripeberry · 30/04/2009 14:21

Although its very painfull, you can just feel people think its very trivial.
I'm one if those people who won't go to the doctors unless i was really bad.
Also you seem to pick up worse things! Go in for an infected finger, get MRSA type senario.

OP posts:
BiscuitStuffer · 30/04/2009 14:36

Definitely burst it.
The wash it in plenty of water.
Then put some antiseptic cream on it.
Then burst it again when it fills up again.
More cream but then go in if it gets worse.

Is it from a hang nail? how big are the yellow and red areas?

DesperateHousewifeToo · 30/04/2009 14:46

Photo please

smee · 30/04/2009 15:11

If you leave it too long the infection gets into the blood and that's dangerous, so do something, even if it is stabbing yourself with a pin...

DesperateHousewifeToo · 30/04/2009 15:18

Was only half joking.

I'm with the stab brigade but make sure you pour boiling water over the needle first!

ilove · 30/04/2009 15:20

I'd pop it too!!!

Longtalljosie · 30/04/2009 15:46

Show it to the pharmacist before you burst it. S/he needs to see it's septic / infected, not just all red. If s/he thinks you'll need antibiotics - that'll give you some ammunition when you ring back your surgery - "I've shown it to the pharmacist and he's advised me it's septic". That should get you an emergency appt.

Ripeberry · 30/04/2009 17:01

I sae the Pharmacist, he said it looks like a Paranychia infection (i've googled it) and it sounds scary! Could lose my finger!
So its down to Casualty this evening, got to wait for DH to come home.
I may be there for hours, but i don't want to risk it getting worse

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 30/04/2009 17:07

im that you cant get a doctor appointment on the day you ring

if i ring my surgery at 8am i will be seen that day, and usually get a chocie of 3 times, but will def be seen

hope your finger is ok - i also googled it

Ripeberry · 30/04/2009 17:08

Also i think i know how it happened. I am a nail bitter and yesterday i repoted a plant without my gloves.
Must have picked up something nasty from the soil.
That means i'm going to have my finger sliced open and a Tetanus shot!
Think of me tonight

Ripeberry · 30/04/2009 18:37

OMG! NHS direct can't help anyone for over 4hrs! Its chaos, their switchboard is jammed with people who think they have the swine flu!
I'm going to the vet (seriously)! i'll get seen faster.
A&E waiting times are ridiculous, if i went now would not be seen until midnight! .
God help us when people do fall ill!
