Just returned from A&E with DS 16 months. He was sitting in his Tripp Trapp strapped in but as my IDIOT!!!! husband walked across the kitchen to get DS his tea, DS pushed against the table, put his legs up and pushed backwards tipping the chair up and straight over backwards. He toppled back and slammed his head against the tiled floor He is ok, massive lump and watching him closly but am soooooo cross with DH!!! I have moved the chair to back up against the wall and table so he can't move it, but should this be able to happen??

No idea, but why are you cross with your DH?

misdee · 27/04/2009 21:01

its a comman 'fault' with the design, and i remember it being poiinted out.

why is it dh fasult though?

kalo12 · 27/04/2009 21:01

i have heard this alot about tripp trapp

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 21:02

Sympathies for the shock, btw - must have been v. scary.

hester · 27/04/2009 21:02

Poor you, what a horrible shock. Not sure it's fair to blame your dh, though - this could have happened to anyone, couldn't it? It sure as hell could have happened to me. I've been using a Tripp Trapp for 2.5 years and it's never occurred to me it could happen; though now I can see that of course it can.

MmeLindt · 27/04/2009 21:03

That must have been scary. I have never heard that happen before, we don't have a TrippTrapp though, we have a similar chair from another company.

Why is it your DH's fault? If you were unaware of the danger, then so was obviously he.

babyOcho · 27/04/2009 21:03

Your poor DS and DH.

Don't blame your DH, he is feeling really shit about this as well. And it would probably have happened if you were there.

pottycock · 27/04/2009 21:04

This is why I didn't buy one of these....I remember reading product reviews relating this could happen. Terrifying - your poor DS. It's not DH's fault though - it's a design fault.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/04/2009 21:05

Thanks everyone, yes really scary. I'm a bit cross as DH is about as organised as a ??? at tea time, I just wish he hadn't taken his eyes off DS. Its the 2nd major visit to A&E in a month. DH was looking after him the day he cut his head and now has a scar!!

You poor thing. And your poor DH who is probably feeling awful just now.

I have tripp trapps for my DDs and this hasn't happened (YET - BIOAB frantically touches wood) but I have read quite a few posts about it happening on here and elsewhere on the net.

One solution I've heard of is to tie the chair to a table leg.

Try not to be too hard on your DH. I wouldn't expect to have to stay alongside a child strapped into a high chair. And my DDs would never get fed if I did

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/04/2009 21:06

Another with DH sympathy please!!!

Accidents do happen though, and it was just your DH's bad luck to have been with your DS when both of these accidents happened.

pottycock · 27/04/2009 21:06

DD is the same age and she is always walloping herself off this that and the other. Give your DH a break - he'll be feeling awful.

domesticslattern · 27/04/2009 21:07

Your DS could have done it very quickly even if your DH had been staring right at him, I suspect.

This is why my Tripp Trapp is against a wall.

Hope your DS gets better soon.

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 21:07

It's not possible to keep your eyes on a little one all the time, with all the organisation in the world. I really don't think it's fair on your dh - the high chair should be much safer.

And children will always find a way of bumping into things/falling the second your back is turned.

babyOcho · 27/04/2009 21:08

Did your DS push against the leg of the table or the edge of the table?

We have a trip trapp and it never occurred to me that this would happen.

Honestly, your DH is feeling so crap already. It was an accident.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/04/2009 21:08

Sorry 'Enough' not another!! See I'm so mad with him I can't spell!!

He pushed against the edge of the table! To be honest I think pushing against anything could make it topple. I have moved it to between the table and the wall which isn't the greatest place in terms of food up the wall etc, but needs must!

you know, sometimes you have to take your eyes off your dc.

MmeLindt · 27/04/2009 21:13

We have Moizi chairs (similar in design to TrippTrapp). I will get DD to tip test them tomorrow. We have certainly never had them tip over and my DC are very active.

Go and give your DH a cuddle, MaryPoppins. Bet he is miserable.

crabby · 27/04/2009 21:14

I was worried about this having read similar stories hence tripp trapp between wall and table.

The tripp trapp instructions say not to use on a floor that is not smooth as this can happen. It is designed to use on something like laminate and then it will just slide not tip. Ours is very rough tiles hence the need to wedge it in. Worth thinking about pre purchase.

SoupDragon · 27/04/2009 21:15

I hope he's more sympathetic to you when your DS has an accident on your watch.

mistlethrush · 27/04/2009 21:16

TBH I think that a determined child could probably do something similar to a lot of high chairs. Ds occasionally used to try this - but for meals I would be sitting next to him (on the next side) and often kept my foot on the bottom bar as it stopped him pushing himself backwards - which was his favourite trick. However, we had a tiled floor, so the chair probably slipped backwards rather than staying where it was and starting to tilt instead.

I think that the suggestion of tying the chair to a table leg would be good for your peace of mind - or simply having insufficient space behind the chair for it to fall over.

Ds is 4 and still uses his trip trap very happily - its great for not only meals but also writing, drawing and other things to do at the table...

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 21:18

Agree with soupy, tbh - it will happen to you, you know, and you just have to deal with these things as a team.

If your DH has to go away for a weekend, for example, and you forget a spoon at dinner time, what will you do?
