Just returned from A&E with DS 16 months. He was sitting in his Tripp Trapp strapped in but as my IDIOT!!!! husband walked across the kitchen to get DS his tea, DS pushed against the table, put his legs up and pushed backwards tipping the chair up and straight over backwards. He toppled back and slammed his head against the tiled floor He is ok, massive lump and watching him closly but am soooooo cross with DH!!! I have moved the chair to back up against the wall and table so he can't move it, but should this be able to happen??

OK POINT TAKEN ABOUT DH..... I DIDN'T DO AN AIBU TO BLAME DH, BUT YOU WIN.

Our floor is tiled with rough ish tiles so this may not help but I expect it would happen on any flooring. Just thinking about kids at school who rock on their chairs.....

we have tripp trapp and before buying it I knew of this possible risk which however is almost similar with any chair if pushed similarly. For peace of mind and because a lot of people told us that tripp trapps are a pita for tripping on their legs we put ours between table and wall. I certainly know I am not able to look at my children every minute so chair must be safe.
DD1 fell from the table where he climbed on from the highchair while in care with dh at around the same age. Did not blame dh as it could have happened to me.

scottishmummy · 27/04/2009 21:32

shame about your son so scary, any highchair can tip if given leverage

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 21:35

Think IKEA Antilop quite good for this, simply because the legs are splayed so as to fell any passing adult. This entertains child so she forgets to push against table.

Or alternatively makes it quite stable.

My DS is same age and does push back against the table in his Tripp Trapp. However, our wood flooring seems to be slippery enough for the highchair to slide back rather than tip (so far). I think flooring must make a difference.

Glad the outcome wasn't worse for you

MamaHobgoblin · 27/04/2009 21:46

lol at Habbibu. Definitely a design feature!

for OP - this is the sort of thing that can happen to any of us, and I know it's unfair to blame her DH - but I've been guilty of being irrationally angry at my DH if something accidental happens on his watch. I do apologise later...

TheYearOfTheCat · 27/04/2009 21:49

It happened with my DS when he was about the same age - whacked the back of his head on the floor with such force .

The thing about the smooth / rough floors - we have very smooth amtico flooring, so it can happen on any floor surface.

We have our tripp trapp against the wall now.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/04/2009 21:50

Thanks Mama and Sebby.......might apologise later.......

I've had this nearly happen loads of times, with a couple of different makes of high chair.
I've always seen it as a sign that they were getting too big to be in a high chair!
We now have 2 little low chairs and a little mini table! 16 months might be a little young I suppose, but my DS2 has been eating like this for a while and he's only just 2.

Glad your Ds is OK!

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 27/04/2009 21:55

Habbibu yes we have that one two for dd2 and the amount of times I tripped on it...

mistlethrush · 27/04/2009 22:09

We trip on our triptrap!!

And, as said before, ds is still using his trip trap - its grown with him...

Flibbertyjibbet · 27/04/2009 22:18

we have very rough floor tiles, two tripp trapps in constant use not against a wall, by two very strong boys aged 4 and almost 3. Not once has either of them fallen over backwards in them.

However irrc, by 16m when they were able to get up and down off the seat by themselves and sit in it unaided, they weren't in it as a highchair, but as a high seat.

So if they got fed up I think they were more likely to just get down rather than push back against the table.

I am a bit that you are blaming your husband for something that he would not have expected to happen, but which did happen when he just so happened to be walking across the kitchen.

I like to think that I give my dp credit for paying attention to the ds's but I don't blame him when accidents happen.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/04/2009 22:24

I think at 16months he is far to young to use a tripp trapp as a chair flibberty. I hope you do give your DH credit......just wait till its your turn......

Mine (purchased 3 months ago) came with a glider extension kit (??or something) that fits on the bottom to prevent this happening and also had big warnings in instructions re this.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/04/2009 22:25

'glider extension kit' what's that BClass, sounds good. Any links??

Ah, now, I've been quite worried about this. My little DS (small for his age, not being sweet here!) is 10 months and he pushes with his feet against the table every mealtime. But the chair just slides backwards on the laminate.
I do have these strange plastic things which came with ?the baby set, or maybe the strapping, and they're sort of extenders for the back of the chair, allegedly to prevent tipping. I'm suspicious. But I'm reminded every day that the chair could tip because I stub my toe quite painfully on those stupid anti-tip things. So I guess they work as a reminder...

IlanaK · 27/04/2009 22:31

We have three tripp trapp chairs for out three boys. My eldest is almost 8 and has been in his since 6 months old. We have never had this happen with any of them. However, we have always had them on laminate flooring. They constantly push against the edge of the table to move their chairs backwards when they want to get up and down and the most likely thing that happens is the table moves across the floor!

Sorry this happened to you though.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 27/04/2009 22:31

Essie3 are you in the UK? Can you link to wear you brought your tripp trapp?

Reading this am now worried about high chairs tipping over (poor you marypoppins - that sounded awful) - but am not sure my dd can push against the table at all - with my antilop the tray is so large that dd would have to have Inspector Gadget legs to make it move...or maybe I'm missing something?

IlanaK · 27/04/2009 22:36

Tripp Trapps don't have trays so they are right up against the table.

Am glad your DS is ok but agreeing with all who say you should not blame your DH. Children have lots of accidents and they can happen however closely you watch them. I would not expect to have to hover next to my child when they are sat in the highchair. I am often at the other side of the room tidying/cooking etc when my baby is eating in hers. I also use it as a safe place to leave her for a minute if I have to run upstairs or to the loo (obviously with no food on the tray if I'm not in room).

Your AIBU is not about your DH but you seem to be blaming him an awful lot for something that is an accident. If my DH blamed me in that way if one of our DCs had an accident I would be extremely upset.

Caz10 · 27/04/2009 22:42

Could anyone link to the anti-tipping thingies please?

my 16mth dd pushes against the table a lot, we have wooden floors, new ones so quite smooth, she just slides backwards.
