That Gran gave her 2 son's 350k each for 'Christmas' & I got £5 ?

or should I be grateful?

It is such a ludicrous (sp?) difference in amounts she must be making a point. But what point? Very strange!

SuziSeis · 26/04/2009 22:34

£5 is so stingy to be pointed if she is giving others 350,000

from my lovely gp's £5 was lovely but everyone got it!

GivePeasAChance · 26/04/2009 22:35

There must be something going on that you don't know about. Family skeletons and all that.

(e.g. we were very perturbed when DHs gran died and when the house was sold, the 2 sisters got most of the money while DHs dad got bugger all - can't remember amounts but £100s of k. But it turned out that Grandma had lent money to him years earlier and sisters took it out of the inheritance at inflationary rate - so was fair enough)

x posts songbird!!

Claire2009 · 26/04/2009 22:36

She's 'all there', can count.

I'm not sure if he will say anything but he was shocked when he found out, very much so. I guess he might say something but my bets are on him not saying anything...

He jokingly commented saying "oh that'll be the year I got £20 for xmas & £20 for my b'day" (usually he'll get £20 for Xmas & nothing for his bday but last year he got both )

Claire2009 · 26/04/2009 22:38

He got a loan a few years back of £2k, she bailed him out on it & has the deeds to his house so he can't do that again (loan against the house kinda thing? Not sure never had one)..

Perhaps, I don't know so guessing here. She's keeping his bit back ?! But for when?!

He done the loan when he was a heavy alcoholic, he hasn't drank alcohol for 18mths+ now and is a LOT better than me with money (spending it/savings/investments etc)

OP posts:
Songbird · 26/04/2009 22:41

Are you sure that's right? I wouldn't have thought you'd borrow £2,000 against a house. £20,000 or £200,000 maybe. And still diesn't add up to £350,000.

SlartyBartFast · 26/04/2009 22:42

money is evil

Claire2009 · 26/04/2009 22:44

He never attempted to pay any of the money back, got into trouble & Gran bailed him out with the money & took his house deeds so he couldn't do any loans against the house again.

OP posts:
nametaken · 26/04/2009 22:44

Ah, so she's afraid to give him money in case he spends it all on alcohol.

SuziSeis · 26/04/2009 22:45

doesn't explain our fiver though...

Claire2009 · 26/04/2009 22:52

Nope, he's been clear 18mths+ and she knows it

QSthevampireslayer · 27/04/2009 07:22

Look under the circumstances you should maybe bring it up. Take the approach that you know how much money the others got, and you are ok with your £4, and your dad is ok with his £1.000, but, what you really want to konw is if you or your dad have offended her?

I def. think you need to say something.

Make it clear it's not about the money, but you would like to know why she feels such a difference is preferrable / necessary. As SOngbird said, there must be a point / reason behind her thinking, as it is unfair* (it may be well within her rights, which I accept, but it is still unfair unless there is a reason for it)

If the OP said how she found out, can someone fill me in? [Lazy mummy emoticon!]

sleeplessinstretford · 27/04/2009 08:28

i may have been being a tiny bit flip with my initial response-perhaps the other brothers are 'helping her with her affairs'(whilst helping themselves to the cash) does she have a solicitor/accountant/someone else who 'helps' her?

Surfermum · 27/04/2009 09:14

It sounds to me like she isn't happy to hand over a large sum of money in case he starts drinking again.

Maybe she has loaned him a lot more that you know about, and perhaps he knows that which is why he seems to be more OK with it that you.

choufleur · 27/04/2009 13:51

has the money come from her or from your Dad's step dad? whilst he may have brought your dad up he may not have exactly the same feelings for him.
