To use the disabled loo to avoid sitting on turds?

HellHathNoFury · 18/04/2009 14:24

I was in Sainsburys earlier and in the queue for the loo. I was desperate and waited for a while. Eventually it was my turn, and this little old lady hobbled out and so I went in and saw she had left a whole actual nugget of a turd on the toilet seat.
At the back.

I am PG and it was not something I needed to see so I backed out and legged it off to the disabled loo.

When I came out I was told off by a man in a wheelchair for using the disabled loo. Couldn't be bothered to explain turd incident. Just walked off.

AIBU?

so if you use a disabled loo and you sre not disabled, just accept that someone might just moan at you. and don't start a thread on mn......................easy

saint2shoes · 18/04/2009 22:40

herbietea I know but you could argue and argue.
people don't get it.

well I did offer dd's at the beginning(as I do on all these threads) but no takers, they just want the "perks"

GoodbyeClement · 18/04/2009 22:47

saint2shoes, i feel exactly the same as you, but from the other point of view. we'll have to agree to differ.

I didn't know him Minty, just revered him....

MsHighwater · 18/04/2009 22:47

Of course, all public toilets should be large enough for wheelchairs, walking aids, prams, etc. Then there would be no cause for anyone to call anyone else a "pampered bimbo [who doesn't want to] mix with the common people" just because they saw no need to leave a perfectly functional public toilet unused.

Of course, then there would only be one queue and everyone would have to wait in it no matter what their disability...

Well yes, actually. Routinely do so at gigs.

& usually I leave pushchairs full of babies & shopping outside cubicles, & no-one's ever nicked either.

I just think the common sense thing would be to have more wide cubicles.

Grendle · 18/04/2009 22:56

No-one feels like answering my question then ?

MsHighwater · 18/04/2009 22:57

Actually, in certain situations, yes I would. I have done so in my local M&S where the toilets were just a row of individual cubicles with one or other of the usual symbols on the door. There was a queue of women. There was an empty "male" cubicle. What do you suppose I did when my 2 year old, newly out of nappies, dd was desperate?

Normally, I don't but that's mostly because I have no desire to see strange men peeing.

saint2shoes · 18/04/2009 22:59

Grendle I didn't as I would assume she would use a disabled loo.
ALL DISABILITIES ARE NOT VISIBLE YOU KNOW.

GoodbyeClement · 18/04/2009 22:59

grendle is that a beowulf reference i see before me?

so: all loos could be sexless, wide, have a sink and change mat in them, and consequently be useable by everyone. Then we need to introduce a custom whereby ANYONE who is about to piss/crap/generally embarrass themselves (or who already has) just has to say a magic word to be allowed to jump the queue with no arguments or tutting.

saint2shoes · 18/04/2009 23:04

herbietea I do agree, I keep getting shit cos dd doesn't sit on the toilet, so how dare I use it when she is using her toilet aid ffs.
mades me mad, one day in my shoes.

I realise that every time I take dd out

Grendle · 18/04/2009 23:08

I am well aware that all disabilities are not visible . So perhaps the next time someone berates a 'perfectly healthy' person coming out of a disabled loo (with or without child/bump) they should bear this in mind, before assuming that their toilet is being misused.

I know this is not what the OP was posting about, but there does seem to be an awful lot of tutting on MN at people who look like they shouldn't be using appearing to use them, and I'm simply pointing out in RL how would anyone know?!

I also had a friend in her 30s with heart failure who was registered disabled and couldn't walk very far without turning blue. You can only imagine how many times she was actually shouted at, often in a threatening way, by other disabled people who felt she should not be parking in disabled bays and accusing her of stealing/buying/'borrowing' a blue badge .

Actually, a little more tolerance in society in general would be great, eh?

GoodbyeClement · 18/04/2009 23:09

but its not selfish is it? or am i missing something? in rational way, explain what makes us selfish, i seriously can't understand and i'm not just being difficult.

If when PG your allowed to pee in policemans hat I'm sure your allowed in disabled toilet.

ravenAK · 18/04/2009 23:13

OK herbie, I accept all that. So obviously we need a certain proportion of toilet cubicles to have the higher seat, grab rails & sink.

In reality a lot of public toilets still have the baby change 'table' in the disabled loo, which obviously isn't ideal - places like restaurants with 1 male, 1 female, & 1 'access' loo.

I'm suggesting that maybe out of every 10 toilet cubicles in a public facility, 8 should be basic & 2 should be wider & have the grab rails etc. Maybe it should be a minimum of 2 even if there are only 5 cubicles.

Realistically, given the number of parents who feel they need extra space too, the other option is to have a disabled toilet AND a 'buggy-friendly' toilet, which seems rather inflexible.

saint2shoes · 18/04/2009 23:13

Grendle I have never berated anyone in rl for using a disabled loo.
the op was not disabled
yet she chose to use a disabeld toilet and the started this thread. that is what pisses me, people do these things then ask aibu, why not just keep quiet(unless they are just bored)

saint2shoes · 18/04/2009 23:14

ravenAK then do as riven said, fight for it,
all these "perks" that disabled people have didn't just happen, they were fought for.
