To ban cheese and pineapple on sticks and sausage rolls at our wedding?

LoveMyGirls · 13/04/2009 09:00

Any idea's on what kind of food to have instead?

I'm trying to have something a bit different for our buffet but df and a few other people are outraged that I'm trying to ban them.

I have said I will put a bowl of pineapple at the side of the cheese board selection later in the evening.

AIBU? Should I back down?

lolol

I love sausages rolls, I always feel pleased when I see them.

Buffet can be anything you want. I like chicken kebabs at buffets and little sausages.

Think the cheese and pineapple you can ban. I haven't seen those at a buffet for about 20 years!

heather1980 · 13/04/2009 09:06

we had mini pizza, samosas, mini cream cakes, sandwiches and a few other things.
yanbu.
is it a wedding or a birthday party?!

ChippyMinton · 13/04/2009 09:09

Have a think about who is coming and try to cater for everyone's taste - some older folk like the familiar.

Cheese & pineapple is retro-chic surely? I quite like it.

noddyholder · 13/04/2009 09:09

Could be very retro if done well but I would hate it as I don't like either Sausage rolls are the work of the devil!

PlumpChocEggyBaps · 13/04/2009 09:13

You wouldn't get away with banning cheese and pineapple on sticks at our family events! They're tradition, no matter how fancy the rest of the food. In fact, the fancier the food, the better (for retro irony, or something).

What about diddy little Yorkshire puds with a morsel of roast beef and a dab of horseradish sauce? Or mini quiches?

You could go heavily retro, on the other hand, with vol au vents, the afore-mentioned c and p on sticks, sausages on sticks, finger rolls etc etc. That would be fun......

RushandGo · 13/04/2009 09:16

love love love cheese and pineapple on sticks - a must at any decent buffet

MoreLikeMiranda · 13/04/2009 09:18

you could try a theme such as greek, italian or indian?

then no-one will expect cheese and pineapple... but it is yummy!

LoveMyGirls · 13/04/2009 09:28

So far I've been thinking........

Main buffet
lots of different types of fresh bread (seeded, floured, crusty, french etc) cut up and put in baskets so people can choose their bread then choose their filling fillings are
a choice of ham, beef, pork, tuna mayo and sweetcorn or cheese (any other ideas welcome)

Sides are
potato salad
pasta salad
fried rice
plain rice with peppers etc in
jacket potato's
stuffed mushrooms

Nibbly bits are
cheese and pickle pork pies
carrot and cumcumber
crisps
dips
nachos
chicken kebabs
garlic king prawns
Veg samoses
onion barjis

Deserts
wedding cake (chocolate, fruit, victoria sponge)
chocolate fountains (3 with different types of choc) with marsh mellows/ fruit to dip
cheesecake (dp's favourite)
Gaint bowl of ice-cream with sprinkles, flakes and sauces
Trifle

I've never done anything like this before and I'm struggling tbh.

I want to keep things as simple as possible because my family are doing the catering and I don't want to make it too much hard work for them. Yet at the same time I'd like to make it a bit different.

We did have an idea about having food on all the tables as people come in but what could we have? Also I'd have to think of someone who could come and lay it on the tables while we finished having our photo's done

yabu...as well as denying a whole group of people a proper buffet

troutpout · 13/04/2009 09:30

mmmmm sounds blardy lovely...can i come?

cheshirekitty · 13/04/2009 09:32

Don't forget to add the cheesy wotsits to the buffet. Make sure the bags have been opened at least overnight to ensure the right soft texture of the wotsits.

LoveMyGirls · 13/04/2009 09:34

I forgot to add the list from the cheese buffet that will be coming out later

olives
breadsticks
cheeses
different types of bread
phillidelphia
grapes green and red
stuffed jalpeno chillies

I don't think chees and pineapple would be wrong with the other stuff you have.It would only look out of place if you were going really unusual or a particular culture but the food all looks v normal so let them have their sausage rolls1

chimchar · 13/04/2009 09:41

we went to a buffet once which was just tons of different types of bread rolls (big, small, round, square, floured, brown., seeded, etc...)sort of "tumbling" out of baskets onto the table, and lots of different types of cold meats, pates, cheeses etc and salad dishes/onions/relishes and was LUSH!

but back to the question, YABU! cheese and pinapple on sticks are too cool to ban from anywhere! the secret is to make sure they are displayed on a foil covered grapefruit for maximum effect!

roulade · 13/04/2009 10:18

M & S do a great buffet selection you can order ( well you definately can at xmas ) including mini yorkshires with roast beef, mini fish and chips ( in little newspaper cones ) and all sorts of mini versions of everything!!

valleysprincess · 13/04/2009 10:52

I'd be outraged if I had to attend a wedding with no cheese and pinapple sticks. I think it's well out of order

valleysprincess · 13/04/2009 10:54

Are toy trying to avoid naffness? Because these:

crisps
dips
nachos
chicken kebabs
garlic king prawns
Veg samoses
onion barjis

are naff.

Best just have cheese and pinapple sticks and stop messing about

valleysprincess · 13/04/2009 10:54

that should have read "you" not "toy".

blueshoes · 13/04/2009 11:33

LMG, I think it is a great spread.

You could incorporate mini-hotdogs into the main buffet. Easy to prepare and always a hit with children.

For sides, I like to do a colourful antipasto, which has a great wow factor and always well-received. I serve them up on rectangular serving dishes and lay them out in 3 strips of grilled peppers, mushrooms, aubergine, asparagus, sliced mozarella, artichokes, cured meats (parma, salami - Lidl sells them relatively inexpensively), drizzled with olive oil and scattered with olives.

Guacamole is a fantastic dip to eat with nachos: tomatoes, peppers, onions, coriander, avocados (do this at last minute because it turns brown), all chopped finely, mixed with pounded garlic and chilli, sea salt, olive oil.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 13/04/2009 11:57

No! No! No! YABVVVVVVVVU

You MUST have a cheese 'n' pineapple hedgehog, made with value cheddar for that proper retro feel. You could even incorporate cheese 'n' pickled onions on sticks. What is wrong with you woman?

Make involtini (I think) - griddled (I know it's a poncey word, but you need the brown stripes) aubergine slices, rolled around a filling of perhaps breadcrumbs, toasted pinenuts, pecorino cheese, sun-dried tomatoes or olives? Bruschetta (a bit passe I know, but you an make so many delicious toppings). I second the mini Yorkshires with rare roast beef & horseradish. Yum!

What time did you say to be there by??

YANBU - but if it's going to upset a bunch of old aunties (or MN'ers ) then make sure you do it completely retro - HAS to be a tinfoil hedgehog with both cheese and pineapple and cheese and pickled onions and see if you can find a 70's china plate to serve it on

Congratualations and best wishes for a wonderful day

stickylittlefingers · 13/04/2009 12:40

That lot sounds absolutely lush and I reckon most people would find something to like. I love love love cheese and pineapple on sticks, but partly because it's so rare anyone gives me any. Sniff. But do what you like, with that lot no one could complain.

MadameCastafiore · 13/04/2009 12:44

A BBG that doesn burgers and hotdog or a hog roast is what I would do - it's what I want with a few beers, probably cheaper than all those picky bits and something different.

MadameCastafiore · 13/04/2009 12:44

That is a BBQ by the way.
