Tothink that opera is just musicals for posh people in same way that Archers is for people too uptight to admit to enjoying soaps?

see, you can enjoy this scoffing a McD's just as much as smoked salmon sarnies

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 19:49

Hilter? Who's she?

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 19:50

Hitler also liked painting.Should we also reject art?

pointydog · 07/04/2009 19:51

you can keep classical music and art, thunder. They're fine.

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 19:52

Actually there's a lot of art I'd like to reject. Everything that has been entered for the Turner Prize for example.

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 19:52

Thankyou Pointy.

pointydog · 07/04/2009 19:54

(although I'm slightly worried you don't see the glarin g difference between classical/art and musicals/opera )

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 19:55

I'm keeping musicals and opera too. Too bad if you don't like it...hugs them protectively.

becaroo · 07/04/2009 19:56

Very true pointy...I may enter some of my sons more horrid nappies for the turner prize...bet they would end up on the bloody shortlist

Bloody Tracy bloody Emin...what a talentless bag of bile

Sorry, may be feeling a bit hormonal today

Katisha · 07/04/2009 19:57

Well in previous centuries opera WAS like musicals. And people behaved pretty badly while watching them as well! They are not all highbrow by any stretch.

pointydog · 07/04/2009 19:58

'previous centuries'. It's all changed this century though, hasn't it

becaroo · 07/04/2009 20:01

...I think its Elaine Paiges' voice that bothers me...is a bit odd. All wheezy and sarcastic

I am doing a P/T OU course in Art History and I am DREADING the modern art component...its all shite

pointydog · 07/04/2009 20:02

yes, her voice is like her mouith is always wide open, with her teeth quite close together

Katisha · 07/04/2009 20:04

Yes it has changed this century... Who's for Birtwistle?

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 20:05

I once spent an hour arguing with someone about this ''work of art'' that won the turner prize once.

It was just a few lights that one could switch on and off. How the hell can that be considered art?

MitchyInge · 07/04/2009 20:05

you get good music OR good stories, rarely are both found together

always thought Archers was a bit middle-brow?

pointydog · 07/04/2009 20:06

it's just a bit nothing-brow

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 20:07

Yes I'd say The Archers, judging from the little I know of it,is a middle class show.

BTW What is this obsession with The Shipping Forecast? Must one be English to appreciate it?

Habbibu · 07/04/2009 20:08

Can't get into operatic singing, though the music is beautiful. And the Archers you can listen to whilst doing something else, which makes it better than other soaps. Moony, you are on a mission to stir this week. Pool and sun not doing it for you?

hazeyjane · 07/04/2009 20:18

But there is a big difference between film musicals like On the Town, Singing in the Rain, Fred Astaire films etc (ie they are beautiful), and 'shows' like Cats, Phantom etc (ie they are big and spectacular and a bit shit)

Sorry I suppose I should add IMHO!

Becaroo, All Modern Art is SHite! and - surely you must think some is ok?

Habbibu · 07/04/2009 20:19

Oh, true, hj - hadn't thought of that.

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 20:20

..snarls. Phantom is not a bit shit!

Habbibu · 07/04/2009 20:21

"BTW What is this obsession with The Shipping Forecast? Must one be English to appreciate it? " No, just British (!). Are you not of an island race, Thunderduck?

Thunderduck · 07/04/2009 20:23

I am Scottish.

pointydog · 07/04/2009 20:24

do you mean the real shipping forecast on teh radio? The interminable list of place names and numbers?

I heard that a few times as a kid, when the proper radio shows had finished late at night.

God, it was depressing
