New fence then new neighbours

bluesky · 26/03/2009 15:06

We put in a new fence, good strong (pricey) sturdy one, as we plan on staying here for a good long time.

New house built, new neighbours in.

They have painted the side facing them.

As the law stands, that fence is ours, it's not her side of the fence apparently, it's "the other side of our fence". (I've been on a garden law website).

She is not permitted to paint it, attach anything to it, grown anything up it, without our permission.

What do I do? How do I say something, she is currently having huge garden works done, and I can see trellis and all sorts coming!!?

Help! AIBU to be pissed off??

Why worry about it? I fenced the whole of my garden when i moved in, one side took down the horrible chain link fence and painted my fence to match their shed, no skin of my nose as it will help my fence last longer by protecting it

They also put up brackets on the posts for baskets, it’s up to them it’s facing them

Life’s to short to worry about it

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 13:24

bluesky

is that fence still standing or have you long moved? Grin

Perisoire · 29/05/2020 13:33

Legally you’re right, it’s your fence and she should have asked your permission.

But isn’t it better if they paint the fence to protect it from the weather?

Nanny0gg · 29/05/2020 13:41

@Ric2013

It's 11 YEARS old stuff!!

What on earth was your point? Bet the OP's moved house by now!!

Beautiful3 · 29/05/2020 13:57

I've painted my side of all the fences in the garden! I've attached a washing line to both ends, ones not mine!

Beautiful3 · 29/05/2020 13:57

Zombie thread

gumball37 · 29/05/2020 14:29

The shared fence thing must be a UK thing. In the states if input a fence up it is mine. For a neighbor to paint it would be damaging my property. If I paid for a fence and someone else did something to it, I'd definitely have issue with that.

What I'd do is remind them it is your fence and ask them to paint it back the original color or you can do it and you'll send them the bill. If they'd like a fence in a certain color they can put one up themselves.

callmeadoctor · 29/05/2020 14:35

OP had you painted their side or treated it?

callmeadoctor · 29/05/2020 14:36

Apologies ignore, this is a zombie thread

swimlyn · 29/05/2020 15:36

I can't actually take this thread seriously. So fucking what if she has painted the side that you can't see.
Is it physically harming you?

If it’s YOUR FENCE, then permission is needed to do anything to it.

We had a brand new expensive fence ruined by idiot neighbours who just LOVED black creosote. A beautiful chestnut fence left with black runny streaks down it on our side. It cost us a lot of money, and their answer to our complaint was “sorry, we can’t afford to replace it.”

Fast forward twenty or so years, and EXACTLY the same thing happened again with different neighbours. Lovely new fence, once again ruined.

I flinch now when I see these gardening programmes (or Ronseal adverts) where they’re plastering a fence with their wood treatment. Engage your brain morons!

ListeningQuietly · 29/05/2020 15:46

If that fence is still standing after this many years I'm impressed

ZOMBIE THREAD

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 16:02

Not sure, how long would you expect a frame to stand? More than 10 years surely....

I'd love it if the OP was still on Mn and came back with an update Grin

Perisoire · 29/05/2020 16:05

My mum’s neighbour owns the fence between his garden and my mum’s, she has on the past gone in to their garden to paint their side of the fence 😂

Hingeandbracket · 29/05/2020 16:08

FFS ,it's a fence..trelis? oh no! hmm
Our neighbours have attached a massive trellis to our fence. They have then grown various fast growing climbing plants including Ivy which have pulled the fence over with the weight and forced off parts of the fence from our side.

This thread is in a section titled 'Am I being Unreasonable'. I'm giving an opinion that hasn't been expressed by others. The OP may not be interested, but some people might be. You aren't interested, but you've replied.

By the way, my post began, 'I know this is old stuff'. You could have stopped reading at that point.

Oh... now we're both off topic ;)
