totally understand, thermostate set to 15 hands are permentantly cold as we're in a North facing house that gets no direct sun (well it does but there are no windows to let it in the house!!!)

AnyFucker · 23/03/2009 16:50

can I ask why you are keeping your heating so low?

muppetgirl · 23/03/2009 16:51

from mpov I don't want to spend the extra as I'm tight like that

i used to chop wood to keep warm but we don't have an open fire

mylifemykids · 23/03/2009 16:55

Ironing warms you up!

muppetgirl · 23/03/2009 16:57

true...as does cleaning windows

MsSpentYouth · 23/03/2009 17:04

I am keeping the heating so low because i had a gas and electricity bill of £400 last month, it was for 6 weeks, i cant afford that every 6 weeks, i have been going to my parents house to warm up.

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 23/03/2009 17:06

Just put the blardy heating up! It's gonna cost what, like three quid a week more, and you'll actually be warm enough to get some useful stuff done...keeping your heating so low is like going on an 800 calorie a day diet and then moaning that you are knackered. YABU woman!

If you were just going back to bed because you are a lazy bint and don't need to be up and about until later, I would say good for you! But because you're cold? Silly.

BitOfFun · 23/03/2009 17:07

Turn off other appliances then, but heating is important.

MsSpentYouth · 23/03/2009 17:11

the only 'appliance' i have on the the laptop, nothing else is on, and its not the electric that is expensive, that was £50 out of the £400 for 6 weeks, its the gas which is the killer.

It cost £350 for 6 weeks, i have it turned off at night and i only have the heaters on in 4 rooms.

There isn't really anything else i can do to make it cost less, so i have turned it right down, DS is wrapped up warm but has got a runny nose now

OP posts:
MsSpentYouth · 23/03/2009 17:11

well, i suppose the fridge is on, but that is it.

I'm sure you know your bills but I don't understand why they are so high. I pay £100 a month for gas and electric on a 4bed house by direct debit. Can you ring the gas company and see why it's so much? Or go on moneysavingexpert and see how to shop around for better rates?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/03/2009 17:31

Do you have an ancient central heating system? That sounds like a silly amount to be paying, call them and get them to check your metr.

BitOfFun · 23/03/2009 17:50

to TDWP, I have just clocked your Oi

doobry · 23/03/2009 17:54

Do you live in a mansion? Or do you have no insulation? I pay less than £100 a month for a 4 bed detached house without any particular effort to be economical.

Could you turn the radiator on in one room and keep all the others off so you have one warm room to spend time in?

doobry · 23/03/2009 17:55

Sorry that's less than £100 for gas & electricity.

AnyFucker · 23/03/2009 18:19

I would rather give up something else than be cold in my own house, seriously

Those bills don't seem right

Are you renting? Speak to your landlord, the system you are using sounds horribly inefficient and probably against the law if in rented property

Are you on benefits or anything? If so, go down the social and speak to someone, there is help available

Your home is supposed to be a comfortable refuge from the world, not a place to shiver with the cold. It is barbaric in this day and age.

MsSpentYouth · 23/03/2009 19:06

Sorry for taking ages to reply, i have been doing dinner, getting DS to bed etc.

I live in a rented in house, the boiler is ancient and the whole house is sinlge glazed, it took me 6 months to get them to fix the back door with actually had holes in, i complain about so many things to them but they just don't listen, constantly ignoring my calls and emails, i can't really afford to move atm and haven't done because i am on the waiting list for a council house because the 3 bed house that i moved into when i was with XP isn't covered by housing benefit, and now XP has gone i am on benefits until he is old enough for me to start working

Any fucker, over the christmas period i was saying i would rather give up anything than be cold, but now i am just about to take on a car and need to be saving for the insurance, and this is the only luxury i really have, i am very good with money, i have managed to sort myself out financially from the mess XP left me in last year, i don't smoke, rarely drink and don't waste money. I just can't afford to keep the heating on atm.

It's not that bad, i have a microwaveable sheep thingy which stays warm like a hot water bottle, i put DS to bed with it and then get into bed myself so its not so bad once we have gone to bed.

I will fire another letter to the agents and speak to british gas and see if there is anything which can be done, but i doubt it.

I live in a 3 bed semi, and i think there is little insulation because when it snowed, the snow on our roof was the first on the street to melt.

AnyFucker · 23/03/2009 19:11

MsSpent, I wasn't criticising you, my love (sorry, if it looked that way)

I had an inkling you must live in a rented property, and I think it is disgusting that landlords don't bring such things as heating systems up to date.

I am sure, if you research it, they are breaking the law, privately-rented houses/flats must reach a certain standard of habitability and adequate heating is way up there.

Take advice from the CAB.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/03/2009 19:14

No anyfucker really wasn't having a go. It is true though that keeping your house warm is a priority.

Personally I'd be looking to move sharpish to a landlord that actually takes care of his houses/tenants.

ihatethecold · 23/03/2009 19:15

when im cold i put a hot water bottle inside my jumper as putting on the heating during the day is so expensive
