...to expect people to search for what they want first rather than asking others to do it for them?

I find this in real life and on MN, that people will often ask others to help them find something when it's patently obvious that they haven't bothered trying to find it on their own.

E.g. on MN, it's 'can you help me find out about this nasty disease' (for example) and then someone will google it for them, then post a link to netdoctor with all the info they need. If they were on MN in the first place, surely they have heard of google?

I sound grumpy, don't I?

Yup

Sometimes its more helpful to get first hand recommendations......i.e. the one in Boots is shit, buy this one from Superdrug.......

I sound like I have no life don't I?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 22/03/2009 23:42

YANBU - I often find myself thinking the exact same thing.

kutilputil · 22/03/2009 23:43

did you care to think that maybe people want to chat to someone as well as get advice? i always turn to MN first as i feel mothers have the first hand experience and the contact with another human being at times when everything goes blank is really refreshing and heartwarming.
please dont think us stupid just a little dazed maybe....

frumpygrumpy · 22/03/2009 23:47

you could be referring to my thread and no, I'm not offended

I had already Googled with nothing great coming out of it and if you read through, you will see why MN has a much bigger advantage.

Perfect example of why we jump on and ask.

MotherMerryHenry · 22/03/2009 23:48

TBH frumpy, it's not when people ask for recommendations (I've been known to ask for these on MN), it's just when people want to know something but appear to want others to do the legwork for them.

kutil - I see your point, and I can imagine that it would be reassuring if you're having a tough time, but I generally expect a certain level of independence from people, so I just find it a little...well, lazy.

No, I didn't see your Viking thread, frumpster! And don't forget - your OP said you'd tried Argos first, so you've failed my laziness test!
