To ask my MIL not to call my daughter.....

BunnyLebowski · 18/03/2009 18:17

.....sexy baby over and over again i.e

"Who's a sexy little baby?"

"DD's a sexy little baby"

"Sexy sexy sexy baby"

DD is 5 months old.

MIL was up visiting last weekend. I asked her not to use language like that as it's horrible and sounds completely ridiculous.

What's wrong with cute/gorgeous/cheeky ffs?!

Didn't go down well but she didn't do it again!

Was IBU?

P.S - This is my first post EVER on mn so please be gentle!

God, I had DP's aunt calling DS2 "sexy chops" the other weekend. What is it about sexy and chops? It turned my stomach. YANBU!

whitecoffeenosugar · 19/03/2009 13:03

In this day and age when peadophilia emerged as such a dreadful reality, it is a disgusting way to talk to a child and must be stopped. But on the other hand I'm sure your mother through ignorance is just weirdly blind to tne fact it sooo inappropriate. She is just apeing the behaviour of some people. Don't be to harsh on her but please make her stop it. And I'm afraid I think she will be a bit ( or much ) offended but it must be done.

Eve4Walle · 19/03/2009 13:04

YANBU - it's horrid and makes my stomach churn when I hear it being said aboiut a child.

lilypond1 · 19/03/2009 13:11

what does YANBU mean?.....

FigmentOfYourImagination · 19/03/2009 13:12

Your MIL is clearly a total fruit OP.

YANBU

(You Are Not Being Unreasonable)

lilypond1 · 19/03/2009 13:14

thanks, and YABU means you are!!

PlumBumMum · 19/03/2009 13:15

OMG how strange I've never heard of a baby being refered to as sexy

YANBU

Gorionine · 19/03/2009 13:15

I would hate it! I heard one of my friend call my dd sexy legs I was in total shock!!

YA definitely not BU!

mersmam · 19/03/2009 13:22

Bunny You are already a legendary hero of mumsnet for telling her to stop - well done!!!!!!!

My FIL called one of DDs dresses 'sexy' once - UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 19/03/2009 13:46

bunny

your DD is very very cute

But 'sexy'? aaaaaaaaaaaak I hate it when people say that.

My DD1 (who is 10) has some of those hideous 'in yer face statement' t-shirts bought by my mother - 'Too many boys, too little time!' 'Fight your right to party' (eh?), 'Lipgloss is, like, so important' or something similarly vacuous. They make me gnash my teeth and growl. So of course, my mother buys more and my daughter wears them whenever possible just to wind me up.

I once caught my mother licking DD2's hair whe she was a teeny tiny baby, that was really fucking weird

stealthsquiggle · 19/03/2009 13:54

[bleugh] at describing any small child like that.

Can we nominate this as the first AIBU thread ever to not have a single dissenter on it?

(Grumpy I would be returning those T-shirts to your mother IIWY, no way would my DD be allowed to wear them - ironic wind-up or not)

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 19/03/2009 14:02

stealthsquiggle

The t-shirts are returned every time she goes to my mum's, they are returned nicely washed!

Apparently, I was a horrible child so I am getting my punishment now. My mother is known as 'Granny Bonkers' by my DD's so that probably tells you all you need to know about her (I love her to bits).

And bunny - great, great MN name, Dude!! Fancy a White Russian?

thumbwitch · 19/03/2009 15:49

Grumpy, there was a lovely thread a couple of days ago about how weird it is that tops end up with small holes in the front - it was suggested that washing machine damage might be responsible - perhaps your washing machine could develop selective "teeth"?

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 19/03/2009 16:09

thumbwitch, I shall try that one!

thumbwitch · 19/03/2009 16:10

LittleMissBliss · 19/03/2009 16:32

YANBU-

Just sounds wrong to describe a baby or child as being 'sexy'. Well done for putting a stop to it. Just had a nose at your profile you were destined to be a mumsnetter! Your DD is beautiful and i must say your bump was very impressive.

Miggsie · 19/03/2009 16:36

...bleugh!

Mind you, some good friends of mine turned up with their 18 month old son who had a "lock up your daughters" T-shirt on.
Gross, I asked if the warning was because he was likley to pee on them seeing as he, as yet, had no bladder control...I THINK they got my point

YANBU

Oh, and the T-shirt I saw a girl, about 10 wearing the other day..with the SMURFETTE (the girl Smurf, is that spelled correctly???) on it saying "I love boys". Oh dear.

Fairynufff · 19/03/2009 17:03

YANBU - and I normally defend all MILs but VERY VERY inappropriate. Get DH to have a word.

BunnyLebowski · 19/03/2009 17:12

Grumpy - your bit about your mum licking bub's head just made me laugh out loud. Grannies eh?

And at getting my moniker - what can I say that rug really tied the room together!

LittleMiss - back atcha - your wee dude is adorable!

Thanks everyone for making me feel very welcome! Glad I posted now after only 8 months of lurking!

As for MIL I'm gonna put it down to her being scouse and be glad she's not around too often to corrupt minibunny's innocence

OP posts:
completelyabsolutely · 19/03/2009 18:03

I remember the day dd was born and I was in scbu and one of the other mums was holding her teeny prem baby for the first time and saying over and over 'what a sexy sexy baby you are' and I was a bit at the time - of all the words, but thinking about it now I doubt she even realised what she was saying tbh.

Good for you for speaking up - I wouldn't be very pleased if someone referred to my dd as being sexy - it is a word for grown ups only.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 20/03/2009 13:53

Miggsie

Love your response to 'Lock up your daughters'

TheApprentice · 20/03/2009 14:02

YANBU. Of course you are not!

My mother has a habit of calling ds her "boyfriend".

"How's my boyfriend?"
"Where's my boyfriend?"

She doesnt mean anything by it (and she's a lovely gran) but I think its a really odd thing to say.

spiralqueen · 20/03/2009 14:10

My MIL refers to my DD and her own DD as "it" as in "It wants to have some tea" or "it's going on holiday".

DH puts it down to short term memory loss after a heart attack some years ago but I find it offensive. Her DDs have got used to being referred to like that and it doesn't seem to bother them.

TaurielTest · 20/03/2009 22:57

Yurgh. Good for you for calling her on it. It may have just been that sort of thoughtless baby-directed wittering that people do, but so much better to say something than to cringe and be waiting with gritted teeth for her to say it again...
And love your name. Regards to KarlHungus
