to have sent this letter of complaint? (Bit long, sorry)

I feel I might have been a bit 'OTT', having calmed down slightly since last week. I still feel shoddy service should be reported though.
No response yet. Here is the letter, sorry it's long.

"I am contacting you to register my concerns regarding the service, or rather lack of service, which I recently experienced at your (town name) store.

I visited on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 March.

Complaint 1: On both occasions the shop was hardly busy, myself and maybe two other customers, yet I was not once acknowledged, approached, greeted or offered any assistance during the course of a 20 minute browse. (I appreciate it is nice to be left to browse in peace, but I do value a smile and a friendly greeting, and an offer of assistance later on if required. This encourages me to shop and provides a relaxing and welcoming environment.)

Complaint 2: Worse, when I approached the changing rooms with a selection of items to try on, I was greeted by blank unsmiling stares, and (here I trust I am not entering the realms of paranoia) what seemed to me to be stifled sniggers. When I asked 'May I try these items on?' I was greeted with a curt 'yes, there' and a finger pointing towards a changing room. No friendly greeting, or 'We'll be here if you need any help'. Once I was in the changing room cue whispers and more laughter. Whether this was related to such an apparent spectacle as myself is, of course, indeterminable. But it was unprofessional and off-putting.

Perhaps you could advise these extremeley unhelpful and seemingly immature staff of the following salient facts:

  1. If they find my size 12 post-caesarean figure - no doubt considered obese if you are a 19 / 20 year old - so objectionable, there are many more stores one could (and given recent experiences, definitely will!) choose to give custom to.
  1. Shock! Customer is clad in 'old clothes' rather than the latest offerings (for which these staff are presumably given a liberal 'uniform' allowance). Er, yes, I have a baby and can't spend hours getting ready and co-ordinating. Also, that would be why I am shopping - to buy new clothes.
  1. They are employed (presumably) to provide a service, and were it not for people like myself (ie a customer) visiting the store and spending what is probably the equivalent of a couple of days' pay for them (if not more), they would not have a job in the first place.

I find this blase and even hostile attitude unacceptable at the best of times but utterly astonishing given the current climate. If customers are not valued, made welcome and assisted at the moment, what hope is there?

I found the whole experience very unsettling and off-putting, the absolute anthisis of welcoming and relaxing.

I read on your website that 'store teams are carefully selected to ensure that they can offer our customers friendly, genuine, knowledgeable and impartial advice in a relaxed environment'. This is laugable, and is certainly failing as far as the (town name) store is concerned.

I was left with the abiding impression that Jigsaw (town name) ticks along quite nicely without the interrruption of customers, thank you very much, therefore I am not currently needed and will not be returning to this shop in a hurry, if ever."

you are being OTT
don't get someone fired just because they were having a lugh with a mate at work

compo · 16/03/2009 14:13

sorry a laugh
I thin you sound paranoid, they were probably laughing at something completely different than you

rubyslippers · 16/03/2009 14:14

it sounds like you had bad service - not sure if would have written a letter without speaking to the manager in store first

what would you like them to do now?

FilledWithRage · 16/03/2009 14:14

It wasn't just the laugter though, general rude and unhelpful attitude. It won't get anyone fired anyway, surely?

tiggerlovestobounce · 16/03/2009 14:15

You do sound a bit paranoid about the way that they behaved. I dont think that they would have been laughing at you, and some people do prefer to be left alone while shopping.

FilledWithRage · 16/03/2009 14:15

Well, an apology and assurance of improvements in customer service in the future (for other people if not me) would be nice.

OP posts:
ninah · 16/03/2009 14:15

I'd leave it tbh

compo · 16/03/2009 14:15

well if they decide to discipline formally and that person is on probabtion , then yes they could be fired

TotalChaos · 16/03/2009 14:16

YABU. Sounds like you have issues with your body image and are projecting onto these girls, assuming they were critical of you.

Nabster · 16/03/2009 14:17

Might do if they have had complaints before.

Did you mean to name and shame the store?

beanieb · 16/03/2009 14:17

I think YABU!

rubyslippers · 16/03/2009 14:18

if you only sent the letter last week, then i am sure there is a response on the way

shoddy service is bad but a word with the manager first is always a good step = may have diffused your anger a bit as well

FilledWithRage · 16/03/2009 14:18

On the other hand, if they are fired, maybe they won't be so rude and unhelpful at the next job. Although I hipe they just get a warning. I am pretty sure I was not being paranoid. You just know sometimes. I have never written a complaint before but was really upset about it.

OP posts:
compo · 16/03/2009 14:19

so you have already sent the letter?

FilledWithRage · 16/03/2009 14:20

My body is fine thanks Total Chaos!
I am annoyed when assistants (on a pittance and wearing free clothes) look down their noses when you go shopping in old clothes though.

Rather OTT. Would suggest cutting out everything from 'Perhaps you could advise' onwards, at the very least. You felt you were being laughed at and assumed you knew the reasons why, but in writing it comes off as paranoia.

I would say stick to the basic facts. You weren't greeted, acknowledged or offered any assistance. You won't be shopping there again. End of letter.

ingles2 · 16/03/2009 14:22

nah YANBU the staff in my local Jigsaw are always supercilious.

compo · 16/03/2009 14:24

it's too late for amending the letter, it's already been sent!!

what were you wearing then? and what's how much they earn got to do with it? sounds like you look down on them?!

VinegarTitsCoveredinChocolate · 16/03/2009 14:26

There is nothing worse than poor customer service, i think your letter is a bit OTT, just a plain and simple explanation about their attitudes and rudeness would have sufficed, you didnt need to go into details about your body image

However, yanbu, if the staff where rude then it should be pointed out to the manager, but they were probably part time Saturday girls with little or no training in customer service, still no excuse for their rudeness though

FilledWithRage · 16/03/2009 14:26

Oh no Compo. They were looking down on me!

How much they earn is not really a factor. But I was the customer and they were/ are employed (ie paid) to help me.

OP posts:
beanieb · 16/03/2009 14:26

I think you need to take these bits out

"and (here I trust I am not entering the realms of paranoia) what seemed to me to be stifled sniggers."

and

"Whether this was related to such an apparent spectacle as myself is, of course, indeterminable."

and

"If they find my size 12 post-caesarean figure - no doubt considered obese if you are a 19 / 20 year old - so objectionable, there are many more stores one could (and given recent experiences, definitely will!) choose to give custom to"

and

"Shock! Customer is clad in 'old clothes' rather than the latest offerings (for which these staff are presumably given a liberal 'uniform' allowance). Er, yes, I have a baby and can't spend hours getting ready and co-ordinating. Also, that would be why I am shopping - to buy new clothes"

and

compo · 16/03/2009 14:27

she's already sent it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 16/03/2009 14:27

Ok, why did you go in two days running - this shop does not deserve your custom, I think you were treated shoddily.

I would leave out the three bullet points but the rest of it sounds fine. I would have though shop would be desperate for your custom particularly since Karen Millen/Coast/Principles (similar demographic) have gone to the wall/been taken over this month.

I do think it seems they didn't give a toss about you or how they came across to you.

I've only been treated like that once somewhere and I couldn't figure out why they were being so snotty - afterwards it occured to me that I had been wearing exercise gear as I'd come from the gym

ruddynorah · 16/03/2009 14:28

your letter is OTT and very condescending re the staff. you also sound like you have some self esteem issues. it comes across like you are making yourself feel better by being nasty about the shop and the its staff, you find yourself superior...only you don't.

ninah · 16/03/2009 14:29

Was it as bad on the Thurs as on the Fri? why did you make two trips? just curious, as if it had been like that I think I'd have just left it and not gone again
