to want to use savings to go to the Micheal Jackson concert?

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 00:22

I rarely go out, drink etc and we rarely spend time together without the dcs. I have only ever been to 1 concert before and am now 34yrs.
I want to buy tickets with savings (200 quid each) for DH and I to go. We didn't buy Valentines gifts and will be doing nothing on our anniversary in April.
So AIBU to want to do this? I loved the music when I was young and would have loved to see him live then and feel its a once in a lifetime opportunity.
DH response was yeah yeah yeah and we can use the savings because you will be back working (with a hint of sarcasm for good measure)......why not.

I wouldn't, because I really doubt he's going to be well enough to perform all 50 concerts. Is there really nothing else you'd rather spend the money on?

ravenAK · 14/03/2009 00:29

Probably not, if it's your savings, because he may well fall on his highly insured arse after one date.

How upset/inconvenienced would you be if it were cancelled, or if you went & it was rubbish?

Portofino · 14/03/2009 00:30

Yes I think you are because he is now a sad old git!

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 00:32

TBH I just want to do something. I am so fed up of DH wanting to save, save, save and not having a social life into the bargain. We have about 13K savings not a few hundred iyswim. We have a house rented out, he has a steady job on 34K and I CM atm. We are not paupers, even though thats what he has me believe. Very pissed off.

I say go for it and if he's too much of a miserable git to go with you, go with a friend. It's Jacko ffs!

gibbberish · 14/03/2009 00:33

Considering he is a has-been (even tho he is a has-been 1egend) 200 quid is very steep for tickets (is that rea11y the price? ).

I too 1oved his music, but wou1dn't spend that much on him just to reminisce.

DSM · 14/03/2009 00:34

What are the savings for if not for enjoyment?

I would personally pay hundreds of pounds NOT to see Michael Jackson, but that is beside the point.

Presumably they are joint savings - in which case, take say, £300 each as a treat, and both go and do something you enjoy.

gibbberish · 14/03/2009 00:34

But then I'm extreme1y tight hehe

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 00:35

I do take your point about him not doing all the gigs. Yes he is an old git but his music still rocks if he can perform. Although I suppose looking at his arrival into the UK it doesn't bode well

theres no need to question it any more im afraid there all sold out... i know a few people that have tried to get hold of tickets.

piratecat · 14/03/2009 00:36

think i'd do something more exciting with the money. the guy is NOT going to perform for more than about 10 mins imo!!

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 00:36

No, the savings are from the sale of my house that I owned before we got together.

philopastry · 14/03/2009 00:37

You sound like you want to make something happen. If you could spend the £13k on what you wanted what would that be?

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 00:38

They are for sale on Amazon atm, but after the next few hours will be gone and DH has gone to bed.

Molesworth · 14/03/2009 00:38

OK then, focusing on the bigger picture, I think you should do something lovely for yourself with some of your savings. If not Jacko, something else you'd enjoy. If you have the wherewithal to do nice things, it's crazy not to do them at least from time to time!

oranges · 14/03/2009 00:38

buy them if its your money, you want, can afford them adn won't be devastated if he cancels.

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 00:39

Ooooh A lovely dutch warmblood horse, all the kit, stabling, vets etc for the next 10 yrs!!!!

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 00:41

TBH if I wouldn't get a row from DH I would give that much to comic relief.

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 00:46

Sod it. Tomorrow DH will get an ultimatum. Spa weekend or Wacko Jacko !!

OP posts:
philopastry · 14/03/2009 00:55

I feel for you. It sounds like you feel trapped and with little control. I would love it if you just picked up the phone and donated to Comic Relief. Say £50? It would remind you and your DH of that fact that this money belongs to you both (or maybe it is all yours? Not quite sure) and help out some very worthy causes out there.

I am intrigued that you had such a quick and specific repsonse to my question. It sounds like you have thought about this long and hard. So.. tell me more about this warmblood horse of yours, where would it be stabled, when would you ride it, what would that give you and add to your life?

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 01:01

philo I have always loved horses from being very small, had a pony on loan as a child but never owned one and always rode the untrainable ones at the yard. I love x-country /eventing. I have never had the spare funds as an adult to frivol on a horse. I enjoyed the comaraderie and spirit of the sport and competition because I was good at it. I taught in Cyprus and miss it dreadfully.

i forget the question
but if you have the money, and really want to go...then do it
i would go

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 01:03

Philo- a sense of achievement, especially if it was a youngster to bring on. I could stable it on camp as there is a saddle club.

He's only 50, so hardly an old git or a hasbeen - David Bowie is still rocking and he's ten years older. I just wouldn't go and see Jackson because he gives me the creeps, personally. You'd have to pay me a good few thousand quid to sit through one of his gigs. But each to their own...

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 01:05

Don't get me wrong btw, he doesn't wear the trousers! We have a leg each LOL He is just to prudent with money to enjoy things. I would happily get a pony for dd1 instead. He hates spending!
