to be annoyed at my unreliable friends?

I actually dont think IABU at all so I am really just posting to vent because I am very

Friends of ours called this afternoon. We havent seen them since October 2007. They live about 2 hours away. They said "we're coming down tonight for dinner! We should be there around 5, will call you when we are on our way"

Now we dont talk to them all that often either. They are the type of friends you just sort of pick up where you left off but dont have oodles of contact. And they dont have children and are pretty clueless about most things. I did sort of that they just called and told me they were coming for dinner but as it wasnt really going to inconvenience me in any way and we would be happy to see them I was happy to go along with it.

Now here we are. 6:30 and they havent called, and they havent turned up. We have called them several times and left messages, their phones are turned off. So fuck it we are cooking dinner without them. I am not making DS or me & DH wait any longer for dinner, this is when we eat and we are hungry!

They always do this sort of thing, I hate making plans with them because its so stressful trying to anticipate how badly they are going to fuck it up.

So... here I am drawing the line!

I am going to be a bad hostess and make dinner without them.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 13/03/2009 18:34

JustKeepSwimming · 13/03/2009 18:36

screamingabdab · 13/03/2009 19:00

Vent away !!

Did you talk to them earlier, or did they just leave a message . Keep us posted

diedandgonetodevon · 13/03/2009 19:03

You're right YANBU. This would pee me off no end. I don't mind last minute get togethers but I do expect people to turn up.
How very rude!

MrsMcCluskey · 13/03/2009 19:05

How bloody rude.
Rude to invite themselves
and rude not to turn up or leave a message.
Leave a message on their answer machine telling them not to bother now.

OMG! That is sooo rude!
Never EVER agree to entertaining them again

hereidrawtheline · 13/03/2009 19:23

they are here, and I am getting on with the evening. Glad you are agreeing with me I was half way to thinking I was going to come back to a right old flaming given the way AIBU tends to go! LOL

They got lost because of satnav... and for some reason didnt call us... and didnt answer their phones... because they were busy trying to reprogramme satnav... okaaaayyy.

Anyway they are here and it is still nice to see them.

(I talked to them earlier today by the way they didnt leave a message. I discovered how hard it is to run in wellies when the DW called and I answered the phone!)

hereidrawtheline Don't get too pissed or you might tell them what you think of them.....or maybe do get pissed and tell them what you think of them

Glad they were not injured in motorway carnage, obviously, but honestly, SOME people (especially some people without kids)...

hereidrawtheline · 13/03/2009 20:24

well they have just told us they have one on the way!!!!

not motorway carnage that is, a child!

Maybe it's already turned her brain to mush, and his has come out in sympathy !!?

compo · 13/03/2009 20:27

why are you annoyed?
because they were late?

screamingabdab · 13/03/2009 20:29

compo. They invited themselves to dinner at short notice and THEN they were late

Smithagain · 13/03/2009 20:29

In about a year's time they will understand why their behaviour was unreasonable tonight.

Trust me - I cringe when I think of the way I invited myself over to one friend's house when she had a one year old and a part time job that required evening work .

Have a good evening, anyway.

Mumcentreplus · 13/03/2009 20:31
Hmm
hereidrawtheline · 13/03/2009 20:33

I wasnt annoyed so much because they invited themselves as I said it wasnt an inconvienence for me and we were happy to see them. It was the lateness that annoyed me! 1.5 is excessive by anyones standards surely

But either way I really dont care now am just happy to see them and happy they are expecting! We none of us are perfect.

I'm loving the fact that you're on MN while you have guests....that'll teach them!!

screamingabdab · 13/03/2009 20:37

Have a nice evening .

Leni75 · 13/03/2009 20:40

AHHHHH so now the invite out of the blue makes sense....they want info on children!!!! they always want something friends like that, then you spend the time with them and get over your pissed offness and think 'oh they're all right really' and then they do it again another time!!! Like men really....sigh.....

hereidrawtheline · 13/03/2009 20:40

I know. I do it very very quickly while changing the music we are listening to on the laptop terrible isnt it but I wanted to update you all. saddo emoticon, anyone?

compo · 13/03/2009 20:44

well I think it's rude to mumsnet while you have guests so I guess that cancels out them being late
