To think this is PC gone mad?

DS is 8 on Saturday and I have bough him some sweets to give out to his friends tomorrow. He has done this every year so far without a problem.

Today his teacher came to see me in the playground and told me that he wasnt allowed to give out the sweets, as the school cant condone giving them out and that it goes against their healthy eating policy

Surely a fun-size bag of Haribo isnt going to hurt anyone? Its not like its done every day!

I applaud your DS's teacher.

chequersmate · 12/03/2009 19:03

I dunno, how many birthday's are there in an average week?

nickytwotimes · 12/03/2009 19:03

at the use of "PC gone mad"

Move along now.

oregonianabroad · 12/03/2009 19:04

this has nothing to do with being PC.

and agree with the school policy, although I can understand why you might be upset.

perhaps hand them round the school gates, after checking with parents if it's OK.

WinkyWinkola · 12/03/2009 19:04

I can't stand the P.C.-gone-maaaaaaaaad POV. It's lame.

If they let one kid do it, they'll have to let every kid do it for their birthday and then it will be sweeties every day, won't it?

Clayhead · 12/03/2009 19:04

I wish dc's school would ban them too - some weeks the amount of sweets handed out seems never ending.

FluffyHamster · 12/03/2009 19:04

Sounds fairly normal to be honest and I would support the school on this. Our school wouldn't give them out, and I don't like my DC being given sugary crap either, as I then have to battle with them over why they're not allowed to eat it.

Haribo really is the work of the devil anyway (sugar/ E numbers likely to set kids off).

thisisyesterday · 12/03/2009 19:06

it is nothing to do with being politically correct.

personally I can't stand schools dictating to me what my child can or can't have.

but equally I dislike it when my child is given sweets at nursery just because it's someone's birthday. not necessary.

Frasersmum123 · 12/03/2009 19:06

They used to be able to do it but stopped after Christmas.

I dont really mind too much, as im now enjoying a little bag of Haribo 'tangfastic'!

You might find sweets with gelatin in them might not go down to well with certain faiths or vegetarians. Just to really up the PCGM ante...

choochoochaboogie · 12/03/2009 19:07

Don't want your DS should get upset about it, maybe it would be "more fun" for him to hand them out after school in the playground/at school gate? It is his birthday after all and lovely that you are teaching him to be generous and share with his classmates. Maybe carrot sticks for those not allowed Haribo..??!!

Its just the whle 'healthy eating' thing that gets me! Especially as the teacher is not the smallest lady in the world!

i don't think the teacher's weight has anything to do with it does it?

1, she doesn't make up the rules
2, just because you are large does not mean you don't condone healthy eating in anyone else

fryalot · 12/03/2009 19:10

why don;t you ask if you can take in a bunch of grapes which the teacher can share around the class instead?

Rollmops · 12/03/2009 19:11

I hope my son's will have a teacher like that!

LynetteScavo · 12/03/2009 19:12

Oh, yeah, undermine the schools policy by handing sweets on the playground.

Mini bars of Green and Black I could condone, but Haribo? Bleugh!

Frasersmum123 · 12/03/2009 19:12

thisisyesterday - but maybe she should practice what she preaches rather than making me feel like a 5 year old!

I was speaking to one of the other Mums and she told me that someone had been asked not to when they handed them out in the playground.

so... all teachers should be thin just because the schjool they work at have a healthy eating policy??

bohemianbint · 12/03/2009 19:15

Bit snide calling her on her weight over this.

OnlyWantsOne · 12/03/2009 19:16

If every child brought in sweets, there would be a problem. So you can't really expect the school to allow one child to, and not all the others. Sorry

WinkyWinkola · 12/03/2009 19:17

I love Haribo personally. Especially build-a-burger.

I wouldn't want to try and teach a whole class of kids buzzing on it though.

Frasersmum123 · 12/03/2009 19:19

But they used to let them, thats my point. And they always give them at the end of the day!

Those jelly Mini-pizzas are the best!
