This isn't the first ballsup they have made either!!!

DP and are in a bit of financial shite just now, but make sure we keep our mortgage provider happy. We bought the mortgage up to date at the begining of feb. We got a letter today saying we hadn't kept up with our agreement DP phoned them as we were panicing that the mortgage was three month overdue .

DP PAID it, in person, at the bank - balance transfer on feb 9th. He checked that there were adequate funds in the account. Yes said the woman, it leaves a balance of £2.82 (DP remembers this sort of guff). But it was returned to drawer on the 13th but no one could tell him why - we can't understand this either as there were adequate funds in the account. So now they want the money now - um, well guess what???? Yeah thats right, we have spent it - well we haven't actually but we need it to see us over the next few weeks until DP gets paid, if it were not in the account of course we would have balanced accordingly.

So angry!!! They just mess us about all the time Its not like it isn't tough enough already without this!

its annoying and they should have told you straight away, but if your dp remembers taht there was only £2.82 in the bank, where did he think the money had come from?

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 13:54

d'uh oh yeah, that must be it - my DP must be stupid The woman told him that there was £2.82 left in the bank AFTER paying the mortgage, not before.

Sounds like they are...but perhaps not the only ones.

JaneSeymour · 11/03/2009 13:55

Don't have a pop at Nancy she was just asking

nancy75 · 11/03/2009 13:56

yes i understand that, but you said if it were not in the acount you would have balanced accordingly. if i though t i had £2.82 in the bank and then found i had £1000 in the bank, i would wonder where the money had come from?

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 13:59

we just assumed it was our tax credits. It wasn't £1000 either.

OP posts:
LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 13:59

sorry, i thought you meant, where did he think the money had come from to pay the money in the first place.

OP posts:
mumof2222222222222222boys · 11/03/2009 14:01

I don't like to be boring, but if you are in "financial shite", surely you should be keeping a double close eye on what is in your account and budgeting appropriately before spending stuff? When are the tax credits coming in? How much? Will they cover the shortfall? I don't need to know, but you should.

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 14:04

we haven't spent it at all, in fact it was supposed to be THIS Months mortgage! The fact is that it has to cover because DP is waiting on a payment from a client which is going to be late.

Not sure why i am getting flamed here - the issue i have raised is, that the bank have returned a payment without informing us and on us questioning it, they can't give us a reason. Whether or not we have the money in the bank to pay the mortgage is irrelevant actually.

traceybath · 11/03/2009 14:05

you may have had a cheque or direct debit/standing orders about to come out i guess . . .

look at your statement and see what happened the week before and the week after.

if its still not making sense then speak to their complaints department.

mumof2222222222222222boys · 11/03/2009 14:06

Well on that point alone, YANBU. However, there is more to the story...and it is with regard to those aspects that some might think YAB a bit U.

LadyGooGoo · 11/03/2009 14:06

Barclays is incompetant and i HATE their call centre staff
Had pointless conversations with them about bank charges...makes me too cross now to even talk about it!
They probably did it on purpose to get some late fee from you. Grrrrrrr
YANBU

traceybath · 11/03/2009 14:06

A letter would have been automatically triggered if it had been referred to drawer - not sure why you haven't received that though. Worth double-checking there hasn't been some error.

If you speak to their complaints department - they will help you.

traceybath · 11/03/2009 14:08

Sorry but the whole of a bank isn't incompetent but mistakes do get made.

Just try to get it sorted quickly and if its their error they'll undoubtedly refund you any charges and make sure its not reflected on your credit file.

Rindercella · 11/03/2009 14:08

YANBU at all -- Barclay's are a bunch of incompetent fuckwits. Having given my initial reaction, I will now read your OP in full.

lal123 · 11/03/2009 14:08

yes the bank were wrong to return your payment without informing you - but unfortunately its your responsibility to make sure you have enough funds in bank to cover it now. While I sympathise with you I agree that you should have queried this earlier - when you noticed that you had more that the £2 odd in your account

ThePellyandMe · 11/03/2009 14:09

Its crap that your mortgage payments didn't go through but it does surprise me a bit neither of you noticed.

Do you have access to online statements. I often go online to check how much is in the account, whats gone out and what hasn't. It does help when you are budgeting.

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 14:12

I think it is sorted with regards to no charges being made. There are no direct debts or cheques from that account - the only thing that goes into it is the tax credits and we use them to pay off the bulk of the mortgage. No cheques as it isn't a current account. This is why we can't understand why the funds were returned.

I am quite upset about this, don't really need to be admonished for lax accounting on our part - when you live from hand to mouth like we do, it is different to budget etc and things to get a bit vague - yes we should keep more abreast but its sooo stressfull. Roll on september when i can go back to work. DPs business i picking up, if we can just struggle through this year we will make it - will make all this stress and heartache worthwhile.

Barclays ARE incompetent fuckwits....I am in the middle of a complaint with them for being idiots about a joint account. SO FRUSTRATING!

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 14:14

My point of this thread was

The funds were returned, we were not informed and they CAN'T TELL US WHY!!! Surely they should know this? its not like they were uncleared cheques or anything like that.

OP posts:
traceybath · 11/03/2009 14:16

Lucy seriously talk to their complaints dept - my sister was until very recently a complaints manager and its exactly the type of stuff they deal with.

Mistakes do happen and if they do then customers get compensated/apologies and procedures may be altered.

Don't just rely on local branch staff or call-centre people.

Rindercella · 11/03/2009 14:17

Barclay's are incompetent. Here is what they have done to me in the last couple of years:

"lost" a banker's draft paid into my account by my DH. Took over a year to sort out (including finally cc'ing the CEO on a letter)

"forgotten" to set up a maxi ISA last year. It then missed that year's deadline.

Stopping my debit card when I went on holiday. Even though I called them in good time to tell them exactly where and when I was going.

Cancelling my debit card without reason and without telling me. TWICE.

When someone cloned my debit card, they completely failed to reassure me that the money would be refunded. It took several weeks for several thousand pounds to be refunded, even though it was blatant fraud.

The list goes on, but those are the ones that stand out most prominently.

LEM, I feel for you. I sincerely hope you can get it sorted.

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 14:18

thankyou for the supportive threads - im mid panic attack here, i don't need this, even though DP has sorted it, it is still a bloody mess. Feel like running away

OP posts:
ruddynorah · 11/03/2009 14:19

you 'assumed' it was your tax credit money so you spent it? bit silly. you should have checked first. no wonder your account is in the shit.

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 14:20

ruddynora NO WE HAVE NOT SPENT THE FUCKING MONEY!! IT IS IN THE ACCOUNT, THAT IS NOT THE POINT
