This isn't the first ballsup they have made either!!!

DP and are in a bit of financial shite just now, but make sure we keep our mortgage provider happy. We bought the mortgage up to date at the begining of feb. We got a letter today saying we hadn't kept up with our agreement DP phoned them as we were panicing that the mortgage was three month overdue .

DP PAID it, in person, at the bank - balance transfer on feb 9th. He checked that there were adequate funds in the account. Yes said the woman, it leaves a balance of £2.82 (DP remembers this sort of guff). But it was returned to drawer on the 13th but no one could tell him why - we can't understand this either as there were adequate funds in the account. So now they want the money now - um, well guess what???? Yeah thats right, we have spent it - well we haven't actually but we need it to see us over the next few weeks until DP gets paid, if it were not in the account of course we would have balanced accordingly.

So angry!!! They just mess us about all the time Its not like it isn't tough enough already without this!

My wages get paid into our account at the end of the month. A couple of diret debits go out the same day.
Barclays ALWAYS pay the direct debits out of the account first (so we look like we've gone overdrawn) before crediting my wages INTO the account. They tried to charge us for this on a couple of occasions until I got very fucking angry with them and threatened them with the ombudsman

mumof2222222222222222boys · 11/03/2009 14:23

Lloyds and Abbey drove me bananas...first direct have been ok so far. If you feel like escaping from barclays.

Morloth · 11/03/2009 14:24

All banks suck, all of them - I could tell you some stories about the fuck-ups at NatWest that would make you kiss Barclay's feet.

You have my sympathies, but you really really need to go back to basics and get an old fashioned book, EVERYTHING and I mean every single penny in or out gets written down. We had to do this a few years ago, it is ASTONISHING how much money, just "leaks" out on stuff that is unnecessary.

Seona1973 · 11/03/2009 14:24

was it a BACS payment that you made? If, so then maybe a digit was input/written wrongly for the account it was going to. The receiving bank wouldnt know where to allocate the funds and would return it. You wouldnt normally get a letter about a returned BACS payment though (you would for a cheque). Could either be the fault of your dh or the Barclays teller that took the details from him.

ruddynorah · 11/03/2009 14:27

you said they now want the money but you have spent it cos you thought the money in your account was your tax credits cos you didn't realise they hadn't accepted the mortgage payment.

either way, your accounting is crap and will continue to get in a muddle. you need to be far more savvy with such things, especially if your income is irregular.

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 14:32

Seona, that makes sense, but not sure - he just went inbranch to pay it, our mortgage is with them too see.

Good Luck LEM - Hope you get it all sorted out. Barclays could speak to your mortgage provider maybe? I know that's a tall order but it's possible they might help you out?

Financial problems are the worst. I remember you from a few threads a while ago actually LEM - we're in similar situations, DH own business, not financially secure, living hand to mouth, sometimes things at home good - other times not so good! When we accumulated 4 months of mortgage arrears last year, it was the worst time of my life. So scary and stressful - but we've come through it and as long as you're earning you'll sort it out

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 14:33

"So now they want the money now - um, well guess what???? Yeah thats right, we have spent it - well we haven't actually but we need it to see us over the next few weeks until DP gets paid, if it were not in the account of course we would have balanced accordingly."

If you re read that you will see we haven't spent it, but were holding it for this months mortgage. Which we thought we could pay but now can't.

Morloth · 11/03/2009 14:39

So how would you have paid this month's mortgage if it had gone through?

LucyEllensmummy · 11/03/2009 14:47

late! as usual morloth. Not sure why people are flaming me, its all abit arrogant and holier than thou if you ask me!

not read it right through, but is it one of those weird accounts where you need to keep a grand or so in the balance and they would not pay the mort for that reason.?

workingitoutagain · 11/03/2009 15:27

LEM, I don't think people her are flaming you - more that they are trying to understand what got you into this muddle.

Especially when money is tight, you need to know exactly what is coming into your accounts, and what is going out. I know it is difficult to keep track of everything you owe (what with credit cards etc) but if you don't get the basics right, it is not surprising that you're in the financial do-dah.

It is so easy to bury your head in the sand, and lovely to imagine that "wonder of wonders" not all the money has been spent this month, but if that is really unusual - then something must be telling you that it is too good to be true.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 11/03/2009 15:57

Try looking at your bank statements more often.

lowenergylightbulb · 11/03/2009 16:07

I can't understand what the issue is. Husband paid mortgage, payment got returned ... so why not just make the payment again?

If the payment had gone through you wouldn't have that money now.

I've been to hand, gone to mouth and got the t-shirt and I used to (and still do) check my account a couple of times a day.

Barclays may have made a boo boo, but I think that you need a bit of a financial makeover.

DaisyMooSteiner · 11/03/2009 16:08

Well it's a bit crap of Barclays, but then again, if you wouldn't have been able to pay this month's mortgage if they had transferred the money then there isn't much difference in the end result is there.

Peachy · 11/03/2009 16:09

In my experience (or should I say pat experience- wouldnt bank with them now) YANBU

I also have a very limited income atm and I do find the best thing is to bank online and check every penny- its easy to have cheques come in late etc (some people seem to want to hold onto them for ages) and forget you've written them- online banking by far the best, and daily checks.

Morloth · 11/03/2009 16:37

I wasn't flaming you LEM, I am a bit confused by the situation. Yes, the bank should have notified you that the money hadn't gone through but wouldn't you be in the same situation now if it had?

We have been there, we once had $6 to last us 2 weeks for food for 2 adults. Its no fun at all, but the only way you can really get a handle on it is to track every single last bloody penny. Its maddening, its depressing, but its the only way.

I think if you are going to put personal matters like this up on the AIBU you need to be prepared to hear all sorts of things, no point putting it up if you only want to hear what you want to hear, what you are looking for then is a support board.

nannyL · 11/03/2009 20:57

YANBU

i could write an essay on why barclays are soo crap
