to buy £1 bags of ice cubes?? Is it actually worthy of comment by a checkout lady?

I was doing a smallish supermarket shop today and bought a bag of ready made ice cubes.

At the till the lady ran everything through, told me the grand total and I rummuged in my purse commenting "I wonder if I have enough cash..."

She said "it doesn't go very far these days does it?" and I responded "hmm, no not really" whilst producing my card and putting it in the machine.

She then catches the eye of the woman behind me and says "so says the girl that buys ice cubes" (Snarky smile)

She really annoyed me - why the hell shouldn't I buy ice cubes!! They cost about a quid...I would be more likely to comment on the smoked oysters or salami in the shopping!

What on earth has it to do with her???Very odd or am I nutter for buying ice?

I'd vote nutter for buying ice (), except if it were for a last minute party or you have a freezer compartment the size of a shoe box.

Tap water costs pennies and you don't even need ice cube trays - just a baking tray or tin and smash the ice block into little pieces!

PurlyQueen · 10/03/2009 18:27

YANBU
I'd have asked straight out what the contents of your shopping basket had to do with her.

screamingabdab · 10/03/2009 18:28

You are a nutter for buying ice

But then I think people are nutters for buying water

MmeLindt · 10/03/2009 18:29

Well, I wouldn't buy ice unless I was having a party, but it is none of her business and commenting on your shopping habits is not ok.

Nabster · 10/03/2009 18:29

I would have told her her comment was out of order.

Buy ice if you want. No one's business but yours.

wiffey · 10/03/2009 18:29

Not a nutter for buying ice cubes, do it all the time (can't be fiddling when you need that G&T)

Our local check out lady commented on some posh yoghurts I bought when I said something about checking the discount on something she said "maybe you should check the price on those then before you buy them"

Totally not their place to comment on what I put in my trolly.

Nabster · 10/03/2009 18:29

Which shop was it?

luckylady74 · 10/03/2009 18:30

You are umm odd for buying ice, but she was very very rude and would have got short shrift from me.

PurlyQueen · 10/03/2009 18:34

Can't see what's wrong with buying bags of ice - it's your money.

Hene · 10/03/2009 18:37

Don't be too hard on her ; she was just making conversation.
Yes, I think it is extravagant to pay for ice but I would say the same about water.
Are you being a tiny bit oversensitive and are you over-reacting a tiny little bit? Why bother to post about such a trivial thing?

badgermonkey · 10/03/2009 18:42

I buy ice. £1 not to have to piss about with stupid little trays! And a bag lasts us ages, too. It's a POUND to save time and having a ice-cube tray drip on your feet as you take it to the freezer, and then you get rubbish little brittle cubes too, whereas the ones in bags are nice and big and clear.

MargaretMountford · 10/03/2009 18:43

over reacting a bit here !

'Shall we have a nose at your shopping contents then' should have been the reply.

AliBean · 10/03/2009 18:53

I am lazy and self indulgent! It comes from running restaurants and bartending and liking the convenience of a nice big bag of ice to fill my glass from!!

I didn't overreact to her - just grinned and said it was nice to have a soft drink with ice - feels more like a treat. I posted as I wondered if I was weird for buying ice...my Mum and Aunties always have it in their freezers and since I left home 10 years ago its just something I always have! I never thought about it before now!

I don't use ice, but at home my parents used to fill a tray up then empty it into a plastic bag and repeat every few times they went to the freezer - voila, one large bag of ice that'll last a long time and no fiddling to get one or two cubes out of the tray.

wotulookinat · 10/03/2009 19:09

I don't think it's that weird to buy ice.
I would have been a bit annoyed at the cashier being sarky too.
God, good job she didn't comment on something like condoms or tampons.

Morloth · 10/03/2009 19:09

I buy ice, frozen margaritas require a lot and I require a lot of ritas.

dietstartstomorrow · 10/03/2009 19:15

I always buy ice. I find those tray things a nightmare, and the ice tastes a bit funny.

iwontbite · 10/03/2009 19:18

yes, you are crazy for buying ice.

but no, she shouldn't comment. how very rude.

PuppyMonkey · 10/03/2009 19:23

In what way a nightmare, dietstarts???

You are indeed a weirdo for buying ice. Especially for £1. Maybe 10p and I'd think about it. And I think anyone who puts ice in strong drinks of alcohol is weird too as it waters them down horribly.

TsarChasm · 10/03/2009 19:23

OMG I hate discussing my shopping at the checkout.

I know the staff are probably told to do it but I hate it (as do they I should think!)

I end up having bizarre defensive conversations about why I want things and I know they're not interested in the ins and outs of my trolley any more than I am.

It's all so false along with 'have a nice day'. I like good old British surleyness. We just don't do all that USA small talk here. It sounds odd.

dietstartstomorrow · 10/03/2009 19:27

Well you have to get it in the freezer without spilling it, and then balance it on something, arrrgghhh.

I will always be buying my ice, so there

screamingabdab · 10/03/2009 19:28

Tsarchasm Best name ever !
