to buy £1 bags of ice cubes?? Is it actually worthy of comment by a checkout lady?

I was doing a smallish supermarket shop today and bought a bag of ready made ice cubes.

At the till the lady ran everything through, told me the grand total and I rummuged in my purse commenting "I wonder if I have enough cash..."

She said "it doesn't go very far these days does it?" and I responded "hmm, no not really" whilst producing my card and putting it in the machine.

She then catches the eye of the woman behind me and says "so says the girl that buys ice cubes" (Snarky smile)

She really annoyed me - why the hell shouldn't I buy ice cubes!! They cost about a quid...I would be more likely to comment on the smoked oysters or salami in the shopping!

What on earth has it to do with her???Very odd or am I nutter for buying ice?

I used to buy a couple of weekly bags (I use a LOT in my soft drinks) but gave up a couple of years ago when we had to tighten our belts and now I make it. I hate every single step of the process of ice-making and getting the damn things out of the trays into the bags I decant it into to 'make things easier' and the moment I restore the family fortunes icecubes will be going back on my shopping list, so you go girl! Buy the damn stuff and enjoy it.

yanbu - bloody cheek of her! I have had this in shops occasionally and it is highly irritating. if it were not for nutters shoppers buying ice, she would be out of a job!

compo · 10/03/2009 19:44

'I hate every single step of the process of ice-making'

I'm sorry but lol
what turning the tap on and then opening the freezer?!!

Alambil · 10/03/2009 19:47

I buy ice and water - our tap water comes out white... I don't want to drink white water!!

YANBU - she was nosey and rude

Tinker · 10/03/2009 19:55

How can you have white water?

morningpaper · 10/03/2009 19:56

I buy ice but her comment is very funny

nickytwotimes · 10/03/2009 19:58

I don't understand ice buying.
It is not difficult. It is FROZEN WATER after all. If you don't like your local tap water then use some filtered stuff/ bottles.
It was a bit of a rude comment though.

nickytwotimes · 10/03/2009 20:00

btw, white water is usually caused by high pressure. You can get a plumber to turn it down for you. Takes about 10 mins tops.

harleyd · 10/03/2009 20:00

i would never buy ice

i steal mine from the bar down the road

morningpaper · 10/03/2009 20:02

oh but it is a PAIN to make ice if you are having a party, or indeed, more than one drink

It all slops everywhere

OatcakeCravings · 10/03/2009 20:05

I'd have said something. I always buy ice - it's only 99p for a huge bag and saves time faffing about with those stupid blue ice bags - which I have used - and then when you try and get the ice out it pings across the kitchen!

My local Asda has a lot of judgey checkout operators. I now use the self checkout!

LuLuBai · 10/03/2009 20:08

It's absolutely none of her business.

I've never bought ice apart from for parties, but I'm sure there are plenty of frivolous bits that do end up in my shopping basket that I could live without. My choice!

Well said Mutt, it's just a throw away jokey comment !!

Mmmm, must add ice cubes to shopping list!

27T · 10/03/2009 20:15

The ice in bags stays frozen longer in drinks, is a decent size and you can get it for less than 80p if you shop around.

I also keep all the beer and highball glasses in the freezer - nothing nicer than an alcoholic beverage in a frosty glass

LuLuBai · 10/03/2009 20:17

To be honest I don't think people workin gon a checkout should comment on anything you buy. It's rude and intrusive.

If you had put a pregnancy test kit in your basket would you want that commented on. Or some of those panty liners for incontinence, or KY jelly, or fruitshoots....?

nickytwotimes · 10/03/2009 20:17

True at a party it is a faff.
We bought ice bags for our wedding (reception at our house - that gives you an indication of how cheap we are) and made hundreds, borrowed an ice bucket and it was fine. But as I say, I am quite tight fisted thrifty.

lilacclaire · 10/03/2009 20:19

Yes, mad for buying ice, I put you in the same category as people who buy ready mashed potato and ready grated cheese (like I would if I could afford it ).
She was probably just trying to have a laugh with you and pass the time, her job must be a bit boring without a bit of banter.

bestfriendswithbenefits · 10/03/2009 20:22

Check out workers commenting on my shopping is absolutely one of my pet peeves. I make a mental note of which ones to avoid now. I mean, they may as well say "ooh, have you got a spot of thrush?" if you're buying a tube of canesten, or "like to take it up bum, do you?" if you pop some lube into your trolley. They should be discreet and polite about all of your shopping, it's none of their business what you are buying. I would have thought they are told NOT to comment on customers' shopping, not the other way round.

I buy ice, by the way, but I am lazy, and can't be arsed to faff around making it.

LuLuBai · 10/03/2009 20:22

I've always wanted to buy those jars of ready chopped garlic. I hate chopping garlic and use it in a lot of my cooking. But I just can't bring myself to buy it in jars (I guess the environmental aspect of the packaging puts me off a bit too).

Lilacclaire - I have tried both those things out of curiosity: Ready grated cheese doesn't taste very good. Smash is a very good hangover cure.

I love ice bags! We are keeping those ice makers in employment - be proud!

nickytwotimes · 10/03/2009 20:26

I kind of agree with Mutt's post.
I think it is being taken a little seriously.
I have said some really stupid things over my retail working years when I think about it.
She was a bit rude yes, but probalby not meant that way.
