to be really quite upset about this "joke"

A friend of mine has just been headhunted.

In an (online) exchange about this I said "I can't see that ever happening to me" (been SAHM for eight years)

So friend says "Well they do need good sandwich makers in McDonalds"

(Which was brought on by me complaining about the groundhog doggishness of having to make sandwiches again)

aibu not to see the funny side?

I don't think she meant it to be nasty, maybe she was trying to cheer you up by making a silly comment about what you said. I'm sure if it was said f2f with all the innotation to it you wouldn't have felt so upset about it.

Knickers0nMaHead · 08/03/2009 22:53

Oh ffs, stop being so sensitive It was a joke

DeeBlindMice · 08/03/2009 22:56

Yeah, being sensitive is SHIT, how dare you!

tigerdriver · 08/03/2009 22:57

I am with Knickers here. Obviously a joke. She just doesnt have the same sense of humour
(or lack of it) that you do

HelpwithNameNeeded · 08/03/2009 23:02

I could have used other words instead of sensitive. But I reasoned that as the word 'sensitive' was the least offensive option it was the best word to use bearing in mind how easily the OP takes offence

emkana · 08/03/2009 23:02

aibu threads, dont'cha just love them... sooner or later a ffs will crop up, you can be sure of it

yes yes no sense of humour. It's prob because I'm German

emkana · 08/03/2009 23:03

helpwithnameneeded, no need to spare me

what other word springs to mind then?

OP posts:
HelpwithNameNeeded · 08/03/2009 23:04

Oh no emkana, I would hate to be the cause of you having to start another AIBU thread, which would undoubtdly be the case

emkana · 08/03/2009 23:05

am mentally composing it now

OP posts:
Knickers0nMaHead · 08/03/2009 23:06

Really though, there are more things to get 'really upset' by.

emkana · 08/03/2009 23:07

not really upset, really quite upset

blame lack on nuances on lack of native speaker status

but yes it does upset me to think that one of my friends has such a low opinion of how I am choosing to live my life

OP posts:
Knickers0nMaHead · 08/03/2009 23:10

Has she actually said she has such a low opinion of how you chose to live your life?

emkana · 08/03/2009 23:12

it's the implication that the only place that I would ever get headhunted for is McD that gives me the impression, knickers

OP posts:
Knickers0nMaHead · 08/03/2009 23:13

I would of taken it as the joke that it seemed to be.

But each to their own. You know your friend so you should know if it was meant as a joke or not.

tigerdriver · 08/03/2009 23:14

oh for goodness sake.

it was a joke, obviously. It might have been clumbsy but there you are. Of course she didn't think that the only place you would get headhunted is M thing.

Doncha know, they don't head hunt.

emkana · 08/03/2009 23:18

Okay so put it this way.

This friend is single and childless. So next time I speak to her shall I make some comment along the lines of "xy newspaper is looking for somebody to write about their experiences of motherhood, how about you apply for that?"

OP posts:
tigerdriver · 08/03/2009 23:20

I give up.

Night night girls, off to more inspiring thread.

emkana, just lighten up darling

Quattrocento · 08/03/2009 23:21

Life's too short

Knickers0nMaHead · 08/03/2009 23:21

Now that is being bitchy

HelpwithNameNeeded · 08/03/2009 23:24

You know them dating/penpal adds that say 'GSOH wanted' - never answer one Emkana

emkana · 08/03/2009 23:25

I know it is bitchy, and I would never ever say it, but I obv can't explain it very well.

OP posts:
emkana · 08/03/2009 23:26

I told you I'm German, so there you go, what do you expect

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 08/03/2009 23:27

emkana - it's a bit of a shit thing to say - she probably did mean it to be a joke, but it comes across as a put-down as well.

I would think part of your reaction might be due to you feeling a bit sensitive about your SAHM status, while she is having a fabulous career move?
OTOH, she could have been a bit more sensitive to your situation, not so "yes you poor dear, you're absolutely right, I'm fab and you're not" (which is rather how it comes across to me too, and I don't lack a SOH).
