...To loathe the term 'pan fried'?

What the feck do you use to fry something if not a pan? I don't feel the need to tell people that my bread this morning was 'toaster toasted'.

Feel free to tell me if there are things other than pans one can use for frying.

Deep fat fryer? I think some people still use them.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 05/03/2009 19:44

As opposed to "deep-frying" maybe? Except that happens in a chip pan.

mollymawk · 05/03/2009 19:44

Not as bad as "hand cooked" though. By someone with REALLY HOT hands, presumably.

FAQinglovely · 05/03/2009 19:44

don't you ever buy chips from the fish and chip shop - bet they're not "pan fried"

GivePeasAChance · 05/03/2009 19:44

I thought it said 'pan friend'. Wondered why this phrase had passed me by for 34 years.

Anyhow.......I think it is a reaction to the naughtyness and perceived chavness of frying.

flaminannoying - I love you ! this is one of our bete noirs chez MAS !!!!

Hulababy · 05/03/2009 19:47

Eek - I just used that phrase on the what's for dinner thread a couple of minutes ago. Never knew it was a "bad" term on MN!

I use pan fried to mean doing it in a pan with just a little bit of oil.

Shallow fry - a fair bit more oil, in a deeped frying pan.

Deep frying - in either a chip pan style pa or a deep fat fryer.

Griddled - kind of like pan frying but in a griddle pan

Hulababy · 05/03/2009 19:48

"What the feck do you use to fry something if not a pan"

Deep fat fryer

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/03/2009 19:48

not a 'bad' term Hulababy - just annoying..

Lol at 'hand cooked'. ROFL

hidetheribbons · 05/03/2009 19:52

"oven baked" always gets me.

NorbertDentressangle · 05/03/2009 19:53

At least pan-fried says what it is IYSWIM.

My pet hate is the use of poncetastic foodie terms on menus:

eg. jus -you mean sauce FFS!
tian - you mean a pile of vegetables FFS

PfftTheMagicDragon · 05/03/2009 19:54

It's a bit like all those clothes in H&M isn't it?

Zip Detail Shirt
Pocket Detail Skirt...

honestly, what next? Sleeve Detail Jumper?

macana · 05/03/2009 19:55

Oh, that winds me up too! Like Oven Roasted - as opposed to fridge roasted. AARRRRGGGGHH

But I also despair at the fact shampoo comes with instructions.

flowerybeanbag · 05/03/2009 19:58

I think the 'pan fried' can be forgiven as there are in fact other ways to fry.

I didn't think anyone still had a deep fat fryer, so I was astonished to note that DS's Early Learning Centre kitchen comes complete with one, plus chips and sausages to go in it.

mollymawk · 05/03/2009 19:59

I agree, Norbert.

This my favourite foodie menu item:

Haricots blancs gently roasted, in a tomato coulis, on a bed of lightly caramelised bread.

BalloonSlayer · 05/03/2009 20:00

I used to laugh at the McDonalds advert that said "we take a freshly cracked egg..."

Note, not a freshly laid one.

NorbertDentressangle · 05/03/2009 20:01

mollymawk -BEANS ON TOAST!!! I can see past the hype!

flowerybeanbag · 05/03/2009 20:02

I loathe 'hand-picked', when used in reference to things that don't actually grow and require picking. Or 'hand-selected'.

sherazade · 05/03/2009 20:05

i love all these terms- pan friend, home grown, hand picked, oven roasted, helps you to imagine the process.

mollymawk · 05/03/2009 20:06

Damn, all is discovered.

MamaZzz · 05/03/2009 20:20

"But I also despair at the fact shampoo comes with instructions."

I sit in the bath and read the instructions!
