To think that if 19 people have jumped off a certain place

intending to kill themselves, then measures should be taken to make it harder for the victims(?) to jump off (with nets?)

I dont really know how but surely something should be done?

I have a friend-of-friend who threw herself off a multi-story and just ended up with the most horrendous injuries

they should put a sign up saying TOSS YOURSELF OFF HERE AND YOU MIGHT JUST END UP PARALYSED TOO!

There is a local place which is popular with jumpers and they've put tall fences up, although I think it was to prevent injury to people below more than anything else

I know this is a serious thread but I did chuckle at this!

MumOfBaby · 02/03/2009 16:15

Hehe, I think 'Toss yourself off here' needs a thread all of it's own- all about exposure in public places lol.

Made2OrderJelly · 02/03/2009 17:03

Oh HT i hope it feels better soon, i had SPD and couldnt even make it up the stairs (apparently i didnt have it bad according to my 'young mum hating' midwife )

I slept on the sofa for the last three months of my pregnancy beause it hurt too much to climb the stairs and lie in bed.

I hope they manage to sort your leg out too

I am going to send another email out with my new email anyway

Hope you get well soon

HT You live near me, we spoke before, i am getting a car soon (26th) and was wondering if you wanted to meet for a coffee or something?

I hadn't asked before because i know there isn't any public tranport from where i live to where you live (or at least dont think there is) and dont like to rely on other people running around after me.

Did you get my new email address?

Just in case you cant tell this is Mum 2 OJ

I put spaces so it wasn't searchable so XP couldnt search, its ok though I am hoping he has better things to do now

You ok RIH?

Small changes do make a difference. I know a main line railway station where they locked the waiting room on one platform. The door lead in a straight line onto the platform and thence on to the tracks. People tended to wait in there - where of course the station staff couldn't see them - and then when they heard the train they ran straight out They left the other waiting room open - it had entirely glass walls and you had to turn left or right out of to get on the platforms so people couldn't do the running in a straight line thing.

I think you are right - that number of people jumping off is a clear sign that action must be taken - why hasn't the top deck been closed temporarily at least?

HecatesTwopenceworth · 02/03/2009 20:26

It's sad. But they don't jump because that place is there. They find that place because they want to jump. If you secure that place, they will find somewhere else, or some other method. It won't save anyone. I wish there was something that could be done so that people wouldn't feel so alone and hopeless.

abroadandmisunderstood · 02/03/2009 20:35

am an ex Bristol resident and I found it so gutwrenching to know the only reason for the tunnel under the suspension bridge wasto prevent jumpers from inflicting further damage to innocent drivers.

Every time we used to use that tunnel I had a heavy heart for those so desperate.

Ronaldinhio · 02/03/2009 22:13

sorry had to go out with dh
bah
nice to see you againx

edam · 02/03/2009 22:30

I'd never thought of injuries and deaths caused by suicidal people jumping off buildings before. Horrible.

Made2OrderJelly · 02/03/2009 22:34

You too

Did you go anywhere nice?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/03/2009 22:40

My dh was really lucky in that respect. Someone jumped from our local multi story and landed not 3 feet behind him. Shocking. The young guy died but I couldn't help but think that he could have taken dh with him.

Ronaldinhio · 02/03/2009 22:47

not really (how rude!)
How are things and how is oj??
xp leaving well alone? doing the right thing?

fossa · 02/03/2009 22:53

Staggered that Expat knows two people who have been victims of falling suicides, what are the chances?

I should think the best deterrent would be a large sign pointing out the fact from higher up the thread that out of 19 jumpers only 9 actually died - That would do it.

Made2OrderJelly · 02/03/2009 23:02

OJ is good, he had a hosp appt monday before last (i think?) and we have found out that his heart valve that he had stretched has only shrunk a small amount so he wont need another OP for a while, so hopefully next time he will have an op he will be 4

XP still hasn't sorted out a contact centre, i told him he could see OJ if he sorted it out but he hasnt bothered (we will be split up 6 months on the 5th) his mum hasnt bothered contacting us since ojs first birthday in Dec, her excuse (according to XP) is that she is going through the menopause (obv stops people from picking up a phone ) but it is their loss, DS has all of my family who dote on him, he wont miss out because his dad and his family arent around (and i do let DS and XP 'talk' with webs cams over msn)

But all in all most things are good atm, i am getting a new car on the 26th so will be free again

And how about yourself? how are you feeling? how is DD? (sorry cant remember if you have more DCs)x

'Staggered that Expat knows two people who have been victims of falling suicides, what are the chances?'

Where did you get that from?

I only knew one, Mme Guillot, who taught me high school French.

Another poster wrote about a person she knew who was actually killed by a falling suicide . Think it was Buda?

I don't know anyone who jumped off the Tower because it's been closed for nearly 40 years.

Buda · 03/03/2009 10:03

I think fossa may have been confused as you cut and pasted my post into yours expat.

mrsgboring · 03/03/2009 10:22

I thought that many people committing suicide are under the influence of drink or drugs (and I think the thinking is that they get drunk, decide life is miserable and then decide impulsively to kill themselves, rather than that they drink because they've already decided IYSWIM) So I would have thought fences etc. would be a better deterrent than signs.

southeastastra · 03/03/2009 10:29

i was on a jury for a coroner's court where a young lad had drunk some cheap wine then jumped from a railway bridge. drink was definitely the cause but short of putting nets over all bridges not sure what else can be done.
