to be shocked at my DD being taught multiplication by using pretend shooting with finger guns

My DD1,who is 5 and in year 1, was teaching me how they do ten times table at school and she said they play shoot out with their fingers as guns.

I asked her to show me and she pointed (fingers as gun) at me asked a question related to ten times table and who ever didn't answer got shot .

In this day and age with all the gun crime, AIBU to be upset about this?

We have always tried to instill go values in our children, but this has shocked me. I want to go and talk to the teacher about it, but don't want to look too over protective. I think IMO it is wrong to use this style of teaching, but wondered what others thoughts are on this, or is it a standard teaching practice?

Tanks MrsP, hope you manage to alleviate your concerns, though I'm sure your DD will probably not be applying for her gun licence in a hurry whatever probably with you to instill a sense of right on wrong on the shooting maiming front.

I kept guns out of the toy box for years but gave up as it was futile, but it's not like I didn't at one point share your concerns.

Hope he's ok Jodie. And hobbgoblin, hope you have a better day tomorrow. Difference of opinion is what makes MN go round!

That's Lily, he sounded a little croupy but he's had that before of a night and been ok in the morning so we shall see.

Agree, hobbgoblin hope you have a better day tomorrow.

At my DSs old school they were banned from "making gun shapes" - I thought this was the case in all schools but obviously not. I would mention to the teacher you are not happy about it - she may be able to suggest alternatives for your DCs to do when others are shooting.....

Hi

I spoke to the teacher and explained our family views on guns and also offered the shoot out alternative of football. She seemed ok(if a little shocked I had mentioned it),but I also had to speak about another issue re DD being upset.

Anyway I did apologise and said it wasn't a criticism of her or her techniques (as she is usually really good), it was just this particular method.

Have spent all day feeling lousey as don't really like face to face confrontations or hope the teacher didn't think I was weird or a trouble causer, just don't think it is suitable.

Lily did have a chat with DD before school about her knowledge re guns and she said they kill people (she hasn't learnt that from home?) and she did say it was fun but the finger guns was not good.

I want her to grow up with own opinions and values but at such a young age a little guidance is needed, although on the conversation this morning none was needed.

Oh the headaches of parenthood
