to think £6-700 for a week in Cornwall at Easter is outrageous?

I know, I know, holidays in school holiday time are extortionate but I wondered if anyone had any ideas about where to go for a week at Easter?

I had been thinking about St Ives - outrageously expensive for a decent flat/house and will be overrun by awful tossy haired boden poppets and rich yummy mummys.

We went to Lyme Regis at half term.

Flying somehwere for a city break will cost about £500-600 before we've even booked hotels (we are a family of four).

So, somewhere nice, by the sea, nice restaurants, peaceful ... ideas??

YABU

Cornwall is expensive. If you didn't want to be overrun by tossy haired boden poppets and rich yummys mummys why did you think about it. Or did you only dislike the people who go there when you realised you couldn't afford to.

Rick Steins is nice. Only about £200 for lunch.

duckyfuzz · 27/02/2009 20:37

That's what it costs though - we're going to Scotland for a week at Easter, paying nearly £600 for a cottage for the week

Kimi · 27/02/2009 20:37

i have in laws there...free 2 week holiday sailing yyyaaaayyyyyy

chocolatemummy · 27/02/2009 20:39

ouch lots of bitching goin on in here tonight!
Yes £6-700 is very OTT but its pretty standard now especially Cornwall, what about wales? although its also expensive, or try a holiday park although you might not want the entertainment etc you can just use it as a base?

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2009 20:43

what week is easter in this year?

myfunnynametaken · 27/02/2009 20:46

Holy Week

debs40 · 27/02/2009 20:49

Yes, yes, I know that's what it costs but BE KIND ladies I'm fairly new to this school holiday malarky and we are used to going out of season when seaside towns are (relatively) free to tossy types and cheaper. Even Cornwall can be very different then.

Anyhow, ideas was really what I was after. Was wondering if it was just Cornwall or everywhere?

Pembrokeshire is just as lovely, scenery and beach-wise, lots of nice things to do and much cheaper.

myfunnynametaken · 27/02/2009 20:51

It's everywhere - It is a bit of a shock when you suddenly find that the cost of your holiday triples, but to be honest, you kind of adjust to it and in a couple of years time it'll seem normal.

chocolatemummy · 27/02/2009 20:51

I think most places bump up prices at easter wherever you go and now its even worse because of Euro, everyone stayin in UK
Try:
Park Resorts
Park Dean
Forest Holidays

debs40 · 27/02/2009 20:59

Thanks folks. Tidey do you have any website addresses for cottages in Pembrokeshire?

Ooooh, a holiday challenge, I LOVE a holiday challenge.

Does it have to be right on the coast?

If not, what about this?

debs40 · 27/02/2009 21:37

Oooh luverly. Thanks - will show dh

Ponders · 27/02/2009 21:40

But that sykes one is £525 at Easter, so not much cheaper than what you were complaining about, debs!

If you avoid seaside altogether & look somewhere inland like Shropshire you will find much better value.

debs40 · 27/02/2009 21:44

Tis very pretty though and a bit cheaper...! The ones I saw in St Ives are nearer £700

I need a bit of sea!!

VerityClinch · 27/02/2009 21:46

Don't go to Newquay, though. Was there in September and it really is an ARMPIT.

Saltire · 27/02/2009 21:50

We looked at one in Devon for the May half term. For a 2 bedroom cottage that week was going to cost £850. If we went the week before or the weeka fter it would be £300

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 27/02/2009 21:56

DH and I went 5 star half-board to Egypt 5 years ago for 280 each

last year in school holidays we had a weeks holiday in Cornwall in a one star apartment (charitably) and bought food for the week for £1000

plus petrol to get there and get around(a gazillion pounds)

Ponders · 27/02/2009 21:57

Topsham, nr Exeter - £463

Something like this any good? Topsham is lovely, it's on the river but close to the sea & near some nice beaches

Ponders · 27/02/2009 22:02

another river one - Kingswear, S Devon. £457.

debs40 · 27/02/2009 22:02

Thanks Ponders, that's a nice one too! You are kind folks!

We really enjoyed the seaside town of Tenby in Wales. Picturesque sandy beach, lots of restaurants, pubs and cottages. Not drab the way some seaside resorts are. A week will be lovely. The Gower peninsula is a short drive away.

No Jocastas.

VerityClinch · 27/02/2009 22:09

the old piggery

MASSIVE garden. And chickens.

biffandchip · 27/02/2009 22:37

We're going to Northumberland for 4 nights at Easter - saved The Sun tokens - staying at a Haven site. Just using it as a base and for 5 of us inc accommodation, electric, entertainment passes and linen it's costing just under £150. There are loads of Haven sites across the country so I guess you could try something like that

PuddingChops · 27/02/2009 22:43

I hate hate hate being ripped off because it's the school holidays.
