To think this dog should not have been brought to school?

Took ds and dd1 to school this morning. Standing right in between the two gates was a mum with a pit bull terrier so everyone had to squeeze past it.

Some of the smaller children were obviously very nervous of the dog but she still didn't move.

Given the breed of the dog AIBU to think that this mum should have left the dog at home or at very least dropped off her dcs outside the gates (our school rules stipulate that if you have a dog you should be no closer than 50 yards to the gates anyway!).

YANBU. We tackle the mutt collection every day too.

People have been asked not to keep leaving dogs at the school gate but their little doggies are sweet and precious and misunderstood

Gorionine · 25/02/2009 11:09

If the school rules are that she should not come so close to the gates Yanbu. Well, actually YANBU even if there is no written rule about it and regardless of dog's breed.

In our school parents who come with dogs stay outside the gale with them.

gate

Geepers · 25/02/2009 11:11

I don't think anyone should take dogs to school. I hate having to walk past a dozen different mutts all tied up to the school fence, and hate telling my children every day to keep away from the dogs. Breed of dog isn't relevant imo.

sb6699 · 25/02/2009 11:14

I am a dog lover so normally the dogs don't bother me (in fact have just got a labrador puppy - so cute).

What bothered me was when a mum said to her surely you should at least have a muzzle on that dog, her reply was "oh don't worry, she's very gentle".

Yeah? Try telling that to the parents of all the children who have been mauled by one of those.

Problem being is that if a dog of this breed does turn, their jaws lock onto whatever they bite and there is absoulutely nothing anyone can do short of shooting it.

Will you muzzle your dog if you take it to the school?

Labradors maul children too, you know.

ComeWhineWithMe · 25/02/2009 11:15

Oh YANBU at all . A woman does this at our school with one of those Akitas all it does is bark and bark when the children walk past and she just screams at it to shut up .

I am fed up of having to tell my dc not to touch dogs they don't know it makes me very nervous I once told a man who walked through the local park every day with his pitbill that he should have it on a lead he told me to "shut it" he still walks around the childrens play area every bloody day .

Thunderduck · 25/02/2009 11:16

Their jaws don't lock, that's a myth.

MitchyInge · 25/02/2009 11:17

what makes you think it was a pitbull?

rolandbrowning · 25/02/2009 11:17

Are you sure it was a pit bull? I thought they were banned? If so I'm

sb6699 · 25/02/2009 11:18

Geepers, I wouldn't take my dog to school but if I did I would wait at the corner for my dc's.

MitchyInge · 25/02/2009 11:20

can you tell which of these are pit bulls?

Idrankthechristmasspirits · 25/02/2009 11:21

Pit bulls and Akitas are banned breeds. Why haven't you informed your local police station?
YANBU by the way, they are banned for a reason.

ComeWhineWithMe · 25/02/2009 11:22

If you mean the man at the park with the pitbull he tried to sell dp one of her puppies three years ago and he told him they were pitbulls .

I have rung the RSPCA and our local station and they were about as usefull as a chocolate teapot TBH .

fryalot · 25/02/2009 11:22

I have said this before and no doubt I shall say it again:

NO dog should be at school, either at the school gates or in the school grounds.

A child needs to know that he/she is safe at school and if they have a fear or even an apprehension of dogs, then they do not feel safe.

Telling a frightened child that the dog is gentle does NOTHING to reassure them.

my daughter used to run into the road to get away from barking dogs. So yeah, all right, the dog is safe, but the fucking cars coming down the road bloody well aren't are they!

People who can't leave their dogs at home for half an hour while they do the school run shouldn't have dogs imo.

MitchyInge · 25/02/2009 11:22

Akitas are not banned! none of the spitz breed are?

where did you get that idea from?

rolandbrowning · 25/02/2009 11:23

Mitchy,I got 3 out of 5. Is that good?

idonthaveanamerightnowVT · 25/02/2009 11:23

I thought it was illegal to keep these type of dogs as pets?

If she has one then she should be reoprted to the police, and she should definately NOT be taking it to shcool and putting children at risk

Idrankthechristmasspirits · 25/02/2009 11:23

Not any more CWWM. Was announced this week that all police forces have been told to tighten up on control of dangerous dogs.

Thunderduck · 25/02/2009 11:23

Akitas aren't banned, Pitbulls are, though people were allowed to keep their pitbulls when the law changed if they were neutered and muzzled when in public.

A well bred well trained pitbull can be a very good pet, unfortunately there are too many bad breeders and owners out there.

MitchyInge · 25/02/2009 11:24

I'm impressed but I know nothing about bull terriers, they all look pretty similar to me

Idrankthechristmasspirits · 25/02/2009 11:25

Calm down Mitchy. My mistake. Pitbulls are banned though aren't they.

MitchyInge · 25/02/2009 11:27

look, here is a nice fluffy akita inu

I am calm, it was just a bit of a mad thing to read - like 'fantail goldfish are illegal' or something!

ComeWhineWithMe · 25/02/2009 11:28

I will gove them another ring then but I don't hold out much hope TBH .

I am sure lots of people have complained in the past I know for a fact at least three of my neighbours have and nothing comes of it .
