Did you see the Mail today? There's been a campaign from parents complaining about the presenter Cerrie Burnell, who only has one arm, saying she might give children nightmares. Who are these parents and what's their problem?

OP posts:
harleyd · 23/02/2009 16:52

is this for real?

debs40 · 23/02/2009 16:53

Don't read the Mail...it'll give you nightmares!

rubyslippers · 23/02/2009 16:53

i saw this as well

taliac · 23/02/2009 16:55

Lazy journalism. I think the campaign consisted of one man on a site somewhere (its all on another MN thread if someone can find it?) and lots of people telling him he's an idiot.

2shoes · 23/02/2009 16:55

doesn#t suprise me...
welcome to my world

probably the same type of people who think jade is vile for publicising her cancer

it makes me very

micku5 · 23/02/2009 17:06

Do you know, I don't think my dds have ever noticed that she has one arm. DH certainly didn't until I mentioned it in passing.

oldraver · 23/02/2009 17:07

Its annoying that the Mail has portayed 'parents boards' as being annoyed as all the ones i have been on have been supportive and welcome the positive role model

Even my clubbing forum have said the negativity (I think from Digital Spy) is uncalled for

Flier · 23/02/2009 17:08

and at the DM printing something of this nature. Seriously.

2shoes · 23/02/2009 17:08

children will notice, I am sure dd will, (she has cp) but they won't be scared just curious.
I think it is just that their are some thick people out there who are scared of having to answer a question from their child.

harleyd · 23/02/2009 17:09

my kids noticed
even my 2yo said lady got no hand
but why on earth would that scare them??

oldraver · 23/02/2009 17:13

My ds hasnt noticed or said he has, and a only one child on my Mums Board said they noticed

diedandgonetodevon · 23/02/2009 17:18

Why on earth would a child be scared? It's the parents predjudice more like. Truly shocking but then it is the DM

micku5 · 23/02/2009 17:18

As an aside, DD2 has a hidden disability (not sure if that is the right word). She has Di George syndrome which has resulted in her having a hole in the heart, partial immune deficiency, speech delays and possible learning difficulties.

DD1 (5) is beginning to learn that not everyone is the same (she's had a lot to understand and see in the last 18 months when dd2 was seriously ill) and I for one welcome any positive role model like Cerrie because it teaches her to ask questions and not point and stare.

Vamonos · 23/02/2009 17:19

If people find it 'scary' and 'shocking' it's because obvious missing limbs tend to be an unfamiliar sight - which is surely why it is a good thing to familiarise children early with the fact that not everyone has four perfect limbs, so they don't find it odd or scary.

StealthPolarBear · 23/02/2009 17:23

Presumably the DM are worried that if our DCs are exposed to scary people like Cerrie (she looked about as scary as a fluffy rabbit ) then they might not have any readers in 20 years time?

screamingabdab · 23/02/2009 17:29

Vamonos. Hear Hear!

PrettyCandles · 23/02/2009 17:34

Oh FGS!

My parents had an aupair with exactly CB's disability when we children were between 2 and 12yo. I don't recall any of us having nightmares! She was doubly wonderful because of her ordinariness.

Some people...

Indith · 23/02/2009 17:37

Clearly we should lock all disabled/different/slightly odd looking people up and only let them out at night so they can be used as threats.

"Go to bed now or the scary one armed lady will get you"

There is a bloke around here who looks like super mario. He is way scarier than the lovely cbeebies lady.

StealthPolarBear · 23/02/2009 17:44

Indith congratulations! Don't think I've spoken to you this year!

WibblyPigRocks · 23/02/2009 17:49

My DS has to see my MIL regularly and she doesn't appear to give him nightmares, so he's obviously made of sterner stuff than me, so I won't worry.

ItsThatFuckerSQUONKagain · 23/02/2009 17:49

twas very lazy journalism imo; there were a few quoted posts from various forums (not this one I don't think) all saying that her disability would scare the kids or in some way implying that she shouldn't be on the telly

What it didn't quote were the 700 positive posts replying to every negative one.

The article gave a very skewed view of peoples' views and was designed to stir things up.

Indith · 23/02/2009 17:53

Thank you SPB Must say you and BT inconsiderately having jobs these days rather curtails the MN Durham massive cake eating
