As a line manager can I demand to see someone's Facebook pages?

Because someone who works with me took three days off recently due to "a stomach bug".

I've been told her Facebook pages say she went away for a few days and got pissed with her friends.

Assuming she doesn't own up when I confront her, can I insist on seeing her Facebook pages? If there's no such stuff on there, why would she hide it?

What do you think?

I would.

Make friends with her on Facebook.

compo · 21/02/2009 19:33

is she on another person's friend list that you work with? ask them?

Thunderduck · 21/02/2009 19:33

No I agree with PHW. It's crossing a line.

InTheScrum · 21/02/2009 19:34

Would you demand to see phone records? No.
Invasion of privacy, but she's been blardy cheeky if it is all over FB

hf128219 · 21/02/2009 19:34

I'll try and make friends with her if you want! She might reject you!

shinyshoes · 21/02/2009 19:35

Thing is even if she lets you see her FB pages, she might delete the ones about her going out and getting drunk.

No you can't

SnowlightMcKenzie · 21/02/2009 19:36

Course not.

Instead offer her more paid holiday so she doesn't have to lie to you.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/02/2009 19:37

I rather doubt she'd have me as a friend on there

Shiny, I was rather hoping to insist there and then that she show me the offending pages so that she didn't have chance to delete anything.

No, I don't think you can. Facebook has privacy settings and employers do not have the right to invade someone's privacy, as far as I know. Who told you about her facebook pages? Personally, I'd ignore them in the interests of staff harmony unless they also have line management power over her, in which case maybe they could take things forward in terms of sorting the situation out?

glucose · 21/02/2009 19:37

unless you are her boss its not really any of your business
if you are that bothered by it i think you need to take sometime of sick yourself

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/02/2009 19:38

More paid holiday? You having a laugh? She gets as much as I do! cheeky cow takes three days off as a sicky. We're not a private sector company, this is taxpayers money she's getting pissed on.

OP posts:
Thunderduck · 21/02/2009 19:38

Even if I hadn't done anything wrong I'd still refuse to let you see it.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/02/2009 19:39

Glucose, she is a member of my staff.

I've had reason to doubt her considerable sick record before but no way of actually proving anything.

Is she off sick a lot? If she's within normal levels then no need to chase up on her. If she is off a lot then you would be within your rights to talk to her about it, but not to demand access to her Facebook, that's private unless she invites you.

hf128219 · 21/02/2009 19:40

Refer her to occupational health if you have such a thing?

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/02/2009 19:41

PHW, that's why I'm asking on here.

I feel like doing it. I'm trying to find out if it's unreasonable.

Interesting to know you think it is, thank you.

ScummyMummy · 21/02/2009 19:41

Yes, OT referral sounds like a good move.

wotulookinat · 21/02/2009 19:41

YABU. I agree with HedgeWitch and I would have the union straight in.
