To not want to pay £9.50 to take baby on hols

tegan · 18/02/2009 12:34

I booked a sun holiday when ds was 6 wks old (12 wks now) when booking i could only book for adults and children not infants so he wasn't included. I have now received my confirmation and rang the holiday park to ask if i could hire a cot as i will have a baby, after being to i could upfrade for £75 (not gonna happen) they have asked that i pay £9.50 to take ds and that i will have to pay for extra passes for him when i arrive.

Surely this is taking the piss, ds will be nearly 5 months old when we go, so we won't be doing the entertainment anyway and surely paying £9.50 to take him with us is rediculous.

I feel much better now i have had a rant !!

Aye it is .

StealthPolarBear · 18/02/2009 14:41

I don't think YABU.
There was no space to put him on the form when you booked. If there are extra charges for infants, then they should be asking whether you have infants when you book and stating these charges up front. Yes £9.50 is a small amount but OTOH it's about 1/7 of your holiday booking cost! Also it does seem like they are adding on charges that you had no way of telling them you would need at the beginning!

we've upset the OP I think

Rhubarb · 18/02/2009 14:55

Well actually, if you are on a budget then an extra £9.50 you haven't budgeted for is frustrating. Plus didn't they say that she'd have to pay for extra passes for him?

The OP is only having a rant and I agree that hidden extras like these are incredibly annoying. Esp when you are living day to day and have saved incredibly hard for something. They should have told her upfront what all their charges were.

I would say, borrow a travel cot and don't let them know about the baby.

Ah, now I've seen the voucher it does make it very clear that an extra £9.50 will be added for infants.

Sorry, looks like you didn't read it properly.

I remember when dd was a baby I was still in my single mode so resented paying for stuff like flights when she was a babe in arms etc. However it's just something you're going to have to get used to. These companies are out to make money and they do so with these extras that the likes of you and me have to pay. And this is just the start I'm afraid, as your ds gets older, the prices get steeper.

FAQinglovely · 18/02/2009 15:01

look even holidays on shoe strings/budgets have room for manoeuvring - she didn't know how much a cot would be to hire for the week so must have had some plan for where the money was going to come from???

lisalisa · 18/02/2009 15:02

Ok please bear wiht me here - are yousaying the OP is going on holiday for £9.50? If so where can i book and what are sun holidays? Appreciate that you are all probalby rolling your eyes as you konw all about these deals but I don't.....please pretty please elaboratge?

ellingwoman · 18/02/2009 15:02

For your own safety you should always put the total number of people in the party. If there was a major fire/bomb scare etc. they need to account for everyone. Why didn't you put him down as a child? (haven't seen the booking form so it might be obvious)

Divineintervention · 18/02/2009 15:06

I have to pay full price for my three dcs to fly long haul, fair enough they do take up a seat, but I get NO assistance with my four dcs (one is an infant) when I get to the airport..... The price is at least £3000 for us all....... now that's unfair!

LIZS · 18/02/2009 15:06

It is pretty clear from the form that it is 9.50 per head regardless of age, minimum charge per group of £38. Sorry !

myfunnynametaken · 18/02/2009 15:10

Thank God I never have to go on one of these holidays

Rhubarb · 18/02/2009 15:12

Ah now, it says "parties of fewer than four may holiday upon payment of the four person price of £38" So if she's paid the four person price and is now being told to cough up an extra £9.50 for the baby then that is unfair.

We need you to be clearer tegan.

FAQinglovely · 18/02/2009 15:13

Dvinine who are you flying with that you have to pay full price for a child

I guess it could have change since we flew long haul in summer 2006 but although DS1 and 2 had their own seats we definitely paid less for them that we did for us........

Rhubarb · 18/02/2009 15:14

lisalisa, scroll down to Muff's link, it's in the Sun newspaper, you have to collect tokens.

It's the only way they can get anyone to buy that crap these days, other than hard-up students looking for cheap bogroll.

that was no typo, admit it rhubarb

Rhubarb · 18/02/2009 15:21

Oh shit! Sorry, that's the way I read it!

readyfornumber2and3 · 18/02/2009 15:27

To be honest I think the OP has got away very lightly with a £9.50 charge!

We went away to centre parcs at christmas with my fil and his partner and her children and 2 grandchildren, they had booked a cabin that fitted 8 adults and a 1 bed room for the childless couple, the form didnt ask about children but when we got there and tried to book in they saw DS (2.5) and said as he was over 2 he was classed as an adult and had to have his own bed! (we had took a readybed for him)
FIL had to pay for another 1 bedroom at the cost of £225 (originally wanted £500!) on top of the near £2000 he had already paid and we never used the 2nd room the whole time we were there!

Pay the money and enjoy the break

Divineintervention · 18/02/2009 15:37

Well then you'd be right, it's not full price.........I swear I'm going mad!! I started a conversation with DH last night with the words "when we were in Jamaica..." I have never been......
We are off to Hong Kong and worse than full price they cannot guarantee that me and my dcs will sit together (ds1 7, ds2 6, dd1 2 and ds3 7 mths).

Rhubarb · 18/02/2009 15:47

Divine, trust me, if you have a child sat next to a stranger, just tell your child to start sobbing and that stranger will practically be begging you to swop seats!

Divineintervention · 18/02/2009 16:08

It's not that, we're four seats and an infant. Therefore they sit one of mine behind me and/or accross an aisle as they have to give priority to another infant and parent........ which really pisses me off. I have written to them and now I start my squeaky wheel campaign, saying that I am discriminated against as I have four children. Why would I want my seven year old sat away from me and next to a stranger?
If anyone has tips on how to get this resolved without upgrading I would be very grateful.
