I am sick to death of parents just leaving them in toddlers reach! It really scares me!

I've been going to toddler groups for 8 years, and have never seen a drink spill, let alone burn a child.

I think toddler groups are as much for the parents as they are for the children.

Okay, so this is one of those AIBUs where you think you're being terribly reasonable and you're going to shout at anyone who disagrees with you.

Byeeeeeeeee

my group is called a coffee morning, all about the coffee (and biscuits)

In five years I only have seen one cup of coffee spilt, away from a child.

that poor child

but it's unreasonable to ban hot drinks. the adults should be educated.

i HATE nanny states. just TELL people.

If you feel that stongly about it cah1 then start one up where hot drinks are banned.

Lets see how busy it is compared to the caffeine laden group.

And by the way, most are not called toddler groups but PARENT & toddler groups.

YANBU, I think the safety of children comes before any right to a brew no matter how knackered and in need we are.

My cousin was badly burnt at 5 in a tescos cafe, she was very poorly and suffered for months, and still 33 years later she has the scars, no sorry, hot drinks and dc dont mix.

well i went to one stay and play where they had lidded cups (rather like the ones i give my toddler ) and tbh i didnt go back again, i much prefer the toddler group where you have proper cups and it is serve yourslf so everyone is responsible for there own cup

so i think vote with your feet go to a group that refects your philosophy

Having hot tea and coffee at toddler groups is what stops most of us cracking open the wine.

Scalds at toddler groups v rare imo and ime. If you see a drink in easy reach of a toddler, move it. Ask the person in charge to put up clear notices requesting drinks to be kept out of children's reach. Or stop going to toddler groups.

Cars and small children don't mix either but that doesn't mean anyone wants to ban them

littleducks · 16/02/2009 19:48

and i do feel for anyone who has been injured but how do you extend this 'no tea and children together' rule at home

Not strictly true of course - quite a few people want to ban cars, but not because of toddlers.

Anyway, I was going ...

Cah1 - awful, truly - BUT surely a minority case? I can show you pictures of children that have hurt their eyes on hangers, or door frames, or stairs but are we really going to suggest that all of these are banned?

No.

A toddler group is about socialising, it is for the children but children often just hover around their parents legs (I go to four a week, I've done the observational bit!) The only way my two have learned to interact is from watching me interact, thus they are just as much about the grownups as they are the children.

I am always aware of my hot drink, in or away from the home, and if I thought someone wasn't I'd either move it or move my children away.

oh coat hangers, I caught one on my eye lid when I was six, let's ban them.

Accidents can happen anywhere. I don;t need to look thanks. I am simply stating a fact that the majority of mums go to toddler groups or coffee mornings for the comapnyt and a cuppa.

I used to run a coffee group and I work with young children so I am very aware of health and safety. Rare accidents will always happen. We never had an incident in the 5 years I attended or ran groups.

Yes, YABU.

Obviously, parents should be careful about where they leave their hot drinks, but then that goes for everywhere, including home, not just toddler groups.

I've only been going to various groups for 2 years now, but there has never been a single hot-drink incident at any one of them. Except for the hideous occasion when it was decided at one particular group that there would be coffee because we were there for the children [eye-rolling emoticon]
Obviously, we don't go to that one any more

lol

I would gladly have wine instead. In fact, the tea and the wine can stay. I say let's ban toddlers from toddler group?

Hot drinks have been banned from all the groups in my area. I still go as my little ones enjoy it but the amount of mums going has dramatically reduced and I must say I miss the hot drinks as my morning cuppa usually goes cold and I would look forward to having one at the groups as my little one played. I have never witnessed mums or dads being irresponsible with they hot drinks and If I did I would tell them.

Health and safety has gone MAD, soon we will not be allowed hot drinks at home or to cook (which I wouldn't mind).
