think it should be certificated like horror movies are?

Ds is playing and Grand Designs is on tv in the background as I am interested in Kevin McCloud architecture - and this horrible informercial or whatever it is, has just come on and freaked out 5 yr old DS. I don't know if it's the image of the lady's brain on fire or the awful slump of her face that has upset him most. It has frightened and worried him now.

No worse than the little girl getting run over advert

2shoes · 23/02/2009 17:19

Tclanger brilliant

pingping · 23/02/2009 17:20

In all honesty how many people would know the symptons of a stroke

SparklyGothKat · 23/02/2009 17:22

The one that scares my kids is the 'kill your speed one' with the dead boy wherever the man is, on the tube, in his computer cupboard etc.. it freaked me out too

notcitrus · 23/02/2009 17:29

I just saw the stroke one and liked it - it shows the symptoms, tells you to get help fast, and then the woman gets better! Almost cheerful - certainly positive.

Unlike the 'i'm scared mummy's going to die' one and the nightmare-inducing nspcc ones.

Nabster · 23/02/2009 17:31

What time did it come on?

It is good to scare people. Make them realise what can happen and hopefully it will have such an effect that they will remember what to do if ever faced with someone having a stroke.

wiffey · 23/02/2009 17:36

If it raises awareness that is really the main point. I work in a doctors surgery and we have to try and work out the signs over the phone sometimes or people come into us as "not feeling quite right" rather than going straight to an A&E as they are not fully aware of the symptons.

We're all talking about it so it must be doing some good !!

dragonbutter · 23/02/2009 17:37

YANBU, the flaming gunshot wound is unnecessary.

I know the symptoms of a stroke because it's part of my job, ime, not one person has actually ever had their head catch fire though.

FAQinglovely · 23/02/2009 17:41

but surely the point is that a stroke is rather like a fire, the longer its left untreated the greater the damage?

dragonbutter · 23/02/2009 17:45

i get the point, but think that kids really don't need to know this information. kids are too literal and will wait for grannies head to catch fire before they wonder if it might be a stroke cause they saw it once on the telly.

CharleeInChains · 23/02/2009 17:53

babymt - I remember crying that MY mum was going to die when i was very young, she smoked alot so yes young children do know.

They are nesicarry to make people sit up and asses thier lives and it drills it inot your brain what to do if you came across an emergency.

Ceolas · 23/02/2009 17:57

No, I think it's necessary. Stroke is a mojor killer in this country and recognising the symptoms early is vital.

I don't know what time the ad is on but maybe a bit later in the evening if it's too much for children.

downbutnotout · 23/02/2009 17:58

I don't like it, but I had a baby three weeks ago and am still in the slightly mental stage, so anything even vaguely gloomy freaks me out. I currently have to turn over if either of these stroke ads come on

BouncingTurtle · 23/02/2009 17:59

I think it is a good campaign... I lost my nan to a stroke

BabyMT - I think kids do understand, it upsets my dss (nearly 8) that his mum smokes, he's scared she'll and has asked her to stop but she won't
We need to keep messages like that in the media... though I have to admit if you aren't swayed by your only child, you're hardly going to be swayed by an advert!

MrP2 · 23/02/2009 18:14

I can't believe those who think that they need to use horrible shock tactics on television in order to get people to recognise sysptoms of a stroke or whatever. Surely, other methods can be thought up by these people, whoever it is that makes these "horror movies". It's not necessary at all in my opinion. And yes it will bring back memories that will upset a lot of people every time they try to relax in front of their television.

screamingabdab · 23/02/2009 18:24

I have no problem with shock tactics, but no need to shock children, hence showing it after 8pm. Once you have seen it once, you will remember it, so I don't think my comment about showing it after 8pm is so ridiculous.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 23/02/2009 18:25

i saw it at 5:45, during an ad break for Come Dine With Me (my dd is a big fan )

it's a good advert, but way too graphic for that time of day

FAQinglovely · 23/02/2009 18:26

ermm so everyone sits down and watches TV after 8pm do they???

losty · 23/02/2009 18:29

I dont have a problem with the ad - but I do object to it being shown before the watershed. The reminder of what to do if you suspect someone is having a stroke is essential imo. Time can save lives.

screamingabdab · 23/02/2009 18:29

OOps, yes I suppose I have been caught out in making that assumption, FAQ. I'm surpised I have any time to watch telly at all, given how much time I spend on MN

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/02/2009 18:31

I find the advert incredibly upsetting. I suffered from an episode during Dec 07, where the doctors were concerned I'd had a stroke. It turned out to be hemipligic migraine which can mimic a stroke (I had the droppy face, the inability to move one side of my body, inability so speak properly, confusion), so I do get really upset when I see the adverts because it brings it all back. Which yes, is illogical, but still upsetting for me.

I have always been "stroke aware" becuase my gran suffered a stroke before I was born, so have always been aware of what symptoms there are, and the after effects.

I think the advert is a bit scarey but necessary and im glad stroke campaign has started - my mum had a massive stroke at 49 and is very disabled as a result - half the person she was as the advert says - i know the signs but kinda hoped they would back it up with whats kind of first aid measure to do - you know to lessen the damage if you can whilst waiting for 999 to grace your door..... I have only seenthe blokey one at the sports event thingy....

Tidey · 23/02/2009 18:49

DS (7) asked 'Does being ill like that really set your head on fire?' and I had to explain that they didn't mean it literally.

On the other hand, it's a good thing for people to know what to check for in any situation, like knowing about the glass test for meningitis for example.

I think perhaps it should only be shown later in the day.
