Frasersmum123 · 11/02/2009 14:39

I know in not BU, so im just ranting!

My Mum, Sister and Nan cant spell it right, neither can the nursery I pay to look after him!

Why did I not think when I named him that people would get it wrong?

Feel alot better now

OK, thanks. Next time I come across one in a book, I'll pronounce it correctly in my head.

SoMuchToBits · 11/02/2009 22:55

I know a Fraser who often gets "Frazer" ofr "Frasier"

And I have a Jonathan who often gets Jonathon or Johnathan.

If I meet anyone with aname which has several common spellings (e.g. Isabel/Isobel or Euan/Ewan) I always ask how it is spelt or note the spelling if i see it written down. How hard is it to do that?

loobeylou · 11/02/2009 22:59

(giggles to self) DH is jeremy, loads of people just cannot spell this, we get cards from colleagues which range from "Gerame" to "Jeramony"

IdrisTheDragon · 11/02/2009 23:05

I am Katherine and am perfectly used to being addressed as Catherine/Kathryn/Katharine etc.

What I find more puzzling is when people think my name is Caroline.

lililolo · 11/02/2009 23:31

I think it's BabitU. I agree that sisters, mothers etc. should remember, but I think with others, friends from school or whatever, it's fine.

My DD has a name that can be spelt with a C or a K, and I usually let people know, but if something arrives with a K, the world still turns! i've got bigger things to worry about!

I was really hurt once when I bought a really nice, thoughtful gift for a friend's daughter, Chloe, and when the mum called to thank me for the gift the first thing she said was I'd spelled the name wrong - it was spelled Cloe. A few years later she had another baby, and I thought I really couldn't go wrong with Jack, but I could, it was Jak (or Jac, i forget!).

Anyway, the ungratefulness soured the relationship a bit for me tbh and I found I couldn't be arsed buying no.3 a present at all (I know it's a bit mean to take it out on a tiny baby, but we hardly saw each other by that stage). I try to look at people's intentions if they do something minorly irritatingly, like spelling a child's name wrong

mm22bys · 12/02/2009 07:26

If it is an unusual spelling, UABABU to expect people to get it right.

(I personally try to get spellings right but I do know a lot of people are bad at spelling at the best of times!)

mm22bys · 12/02/2009 07:28

Oh, so it's Fraser (sorry didn't look at who the OP is...am I the only one of MN not to check who the OP is?)?

Easy enough I would have thought, to get right ! Especially by two loving GM!

YANBU....

turtle23 · 12/02/2009 07:39

YANBU. I almost regret my son's name now as NOBODY can pronounce it. It's Pascal. Pronounced Pass-CAL. Not PASS-cull.

kslatts · 12/02/2009 08:24

People often spell my dd2's name wrong, but there is 3 different ways of spelling it so it doesn't usually bother me, however when the school spell it wrong which they often do it annoys me.

Milkmade · 12/02/2009 08:32

Neither my parents, MIL or the aunts or uncles got dd's name right on her birthday cards, DH ended up using her birthdqy to stand up and make an annoucement along the lines "thanks everyone for your lovely cards and presents but it ends in "y" not "ie"...

Tillyscoutsmum · 12/02/2009 08:48

Dh is Ewen and there are multitude of spellings - even from his own family.. My grandparents always write "Andrew" though

mindalina · 12/02/2009 08:55

People can't spell. They certainly can't spell anything even a little out of the ordinary. My name was a very popular one around the time I was born, but the popular spelling has an additional consonant to how my dad saw fit to spell it on registering me.

It is irritating, but ultimately you just have to learn to let it wash over you I think. Or you can do what I do, and have a hissy fit everytime someone gets it wrong, and refuse to respond to the incorrect spelling childish, moi? never....

frostyfingers · 12/02/2009 09:41

Fact of life I'm afraid - my name is spelt wrongly quite often and it's nothing exotic either. It irks me, but not a huge amount. What does get me cross is when I've spelt it for them and they still get it wrong! School shouldn't be spelling his name wrong though - no excuse for that.

gagamama · 12/02/2009 11:25

I wouldn't expect people to automatically select the correct spelling of a name with more than one spelling (eg. Bryonie-Rae! I would almost certainy put Briony Ray and wouldn't have even guessed it was a double-barreled name, sorry) without having seen it written down. How would you know?! And names which have been intentionally spelt to be 'yoo-neek' - forget it, that was a decision YOU made!

There is only really one way of spelling Fraser though, except made-up ones or Frasier which isn't the same name.

Once you've made the spelling clear though, generally YANBU to expect it to be spelt right. You wouldn't improvise someone's phone number or address, so why improvise the spelling of their name?

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/02/2009 11:40

YANBU to expect nursery and relatives to spell your childs name right - i would mention it to them AGAIN

and btw i would spell fraser your way

my name is spelt wrongy those who dont know me, three ways to spell it, but tbh doesnt bother me

my aunt gets very annoyed if i write aunty instead of auntie = but shes old and weird!!

troutpout · 12/02/2009 12:43

ds's year 5 teacher spent a year writing
'Joesph'
on all his work
then towards the very end of the year she started calling him joshua
My sister also cannot spell joseph
she also writes 'joesph'

Miaou · 12/02/2009 12:58

I would be amazed if there is anyone on this board who has never had their name spelt wrong by someone at some point. Granted, if it is unusual/spelt differently/has different common spellings, then it is more likely to happen, but even so. It's a fact of life.

HOWEVER - I don't think it's unreasonable to expect family and school to spell names correctly - after all, they are familiar to them and will have had the correct spelling put in front of them often enough. The only exception IMO is people who simply can't spell.

Ergo - when my eldest daughter received Christmas cards from classmates with a total of seven different spellings of her name on, we laughed. When my aunt and my BIL sent cards with my boys' names on, spelt wrongly, I did this (but that's all!)

Phoenix4725 · 12/02/2009 20:07

its only now i look at my poor Dc and think opps maybe i should givn them easier names

Giancarlo, gets john , jon jean , ian car carlo Gian-cario he get fed up saying theres no hyphen either

CarGirl · 12/02/2009 20:16

We went bowling, dds name went up spelt

abbigail and I do regularly get asked how to spell it as in Abigail or Abigayle???

Bonnycat · 12/02/2009 20:49

PMSL at Jules' KAAtherine

JulesJules · 12/02/2009 21:03

Bonnycat - yep, I obviously should have been a lot more specific

ChampagneDahling · 12/02/2009 21:25

I know what you're going through - we gave DD beautiful unusual name that NO ONE can spell - or say. When a new teacher is doing roll call and says "I don't even know how to say this name..." DD pipes up "That'll be me..." good job she is a strong character! - or maybe that is WHY she is a strong character - had to grow into her name - at least there's only one of her in the class - ho hum - its probably my fault - everything else is......

BlueBumedFly · 12/02/2009 21:51

What is it champagne? I am always on the lookout for unusual names?

izzymattmum28 · 12/02/2009 22:01

My DD has had trouble with her name since birth and i mean both first and surname (not sure if i can post surname though), it is a pretty normal name ISOBEL with loads of spelling differences, and in the end you just have to give up and correct people who get it wrong.
