Frasersmum123 · 11/02/2009 14:39

I know in not BU, so im just ranting!

My Mum, Sister and Nan cant spell it right, neither can the nursery I pay to look after him!

Why did I not think when I named him that people would get it wrong?

Feel alot better now

fattiemumma · 11/02/2009 17:04

DD is Eleanor. i didn't think it would be such an issue but hardly anyone gets it right.

SalopianGirl · 11/02/2009 18:50

My DD's name is Louisa,at Xmas we received a card from DP's best mate's parents with ,"to Lewisa "written in it !!

piscesmoon · 11/02/2009 19:00

First of all you have to allow for people who can't spell!
Secondly if you choose and unusual spelling you will have a lifetime of spelling it out.
My surname is unusual so I say it and immediately spell it-you just get used to it.

Frasersmum123 · 11/02/2009 19:03

ShauntheSheep

The reason im annoyed is that my Mum/Nan/Sister should know how to spell thier Granson/Nephews name, and I have pointed it out several times.

Problem is there are so many ways of spelling things.

Take Isobel which can also be Isabel, Isabelle, Isabella, Isobelle...

Then you have variations on Amy such as Aimee, Alicia can be Alysha... and so on.

One of my DCs is called Anna - you couldn't think much could go wrong with that but we get Hannah, Anne, Annie as much as Anna!

But I do think that Fraser is fairly straightforward and your relatives should know how to spell it so YANBU.

RachePache · 11/02/2009 19:16

YANBU at all. Fraser is a straightforward name. People who spell it "Frasier" are spelling an entirely different name. It'd drive me mad, too. My son is J ohn - we still get cards to Jonathan and Jon - grrr.

WelshJellyBelly · 11/02/2009 19:16

I get my name misspelt all the time esp by family members my grandmothers aunts uncles cousins they've done it all my life even my dad spelt it wrong on a few occasions Its Vanessa and ive had it spelt

Vannesa
Vanesa
Vannessa
Venessa
Vanissa

and so many more ways I gave up saying anything to them by the time i was 10 and instead just thank them for the cards

diedandgonetodevon · 11/02/2009 19:26

My name and DS's name get mis-spelt constantly and they are not unusual/'made up' names.
DS is Isaac

Squirdle · 11/02/2009 20:04

But Pisces Dylan and Caleb aren't unusual spellings! They are the normal 'proper' spellings. As is my name, but I do forgive people for spelling it incorrectly as the most common way is the other way.

Does Isaac get spelt Issac? That's how people spell DS3's friends name

Ronaldinhio · 11/02/2009 20:09

yabu

you should have just numbered your children in the stylie of the toomliboos

BalloonSlayer · 11/02/2009 20:15

Re Natasha/Natalie, Natasha is a Russian pet form of Natalia, the Russian version of Natalie.

the -asha suffix is a Russian thing, eg Sasha as short for Alexander.

Re names, I used to know someone (she was American btw) called Dana-Leigh - pronounced Dayna-Lee. English people constantly would say "Hello Darna." She would reply, perfectly pleasantly and with endless patience "It's Dana-Leigh." "WHAT?" would come next. "Dana-Leigh. D,a,n,a, hyphen, L,e,i,g,h" They would glare at her as if she was being rude. How dare her name not be Darna!

Annner · 11/02/2009 20:23

My Benedict is forever being called Dominic - by lots of different people.

Apart from being different flavours of monastic order, I haven't a clue why.

Usually spelled OK, though...

piximon · 11/02/2009 21:19

My grandparents can't remember my name, I get xmas/birthday cards with the wrong name on.

FIL gave me an unmarked envelope with some money in for xmas as he hasn't a clue how to spell my name, for several years they called me something else, despite me have been with dh for 8 years and being friends with him for 16 years .

Most cards I get from outside the family are spelled incorrectly, I hated it in school, I'm over it now and quite like being fairly unusual. My DCs all have unusual in this country type names which wasn't such an issue in London but in rural area now does cause a lot of interest.

Ashantai · 11/02/2009 21:23

ROFL @ Ronaldinhio

I'm well used to my daughters name being spelt in various ways.

Its Sharna, spelt exactly as it says on the tin! but we've had Shauna, Sharnah, Shanna and Shanaya....

She is now 10 but still gets birthday cards from her nan addressed to Shauna which still irritates me! Family should definately know how to spell their relatives names!!

TheSmallClanger · 11/02/2009 21:28

YANBU. My maiden name was horrific to spell and scarred me for life.
My original first name was always spelt in a multitude of ways, most of which did not exist as real variations of it.
Spelling people's names wrong is bad manners.

laughalot · 11/02/2009 21:32

I have a aidan he gets cards with hayden on and school spells it aiden !

HateSponge · 11/02/2009 21:35

YANBU. It is annoying. I have an unusual spelling of my name. As does DS (I've suffered all my life, I thought I'd inflict it on him too! )

I accept that his friends get the spelling wrong, but it irks me somewhat when his teachers spell his name wrong when writing comments on his homework....they only have to check the front of his hw book!

What annoys me more is when people get my name entirely wrong (not just spelling).

The spelling thing is par for the course unfortunately. My friend is called Karen, yet people can't even spell her name correctly! She has had Keren, Caron, Carin, and Karyn amongst others.........

BlueBumedFly · 11/02/2009 21:51

We have a Lilly with a 'y' who people insist of writing Lillie (!?!) and Rosie with an 'ie' who people insist on using a 'y' - even family!

Also my sil INSISTS on spelling Clemmie (of Clementine) Clemmy.

WTF? I write Christmas, Birthday, Thank you etc. cards VERY clearly from all of us so why on earth can people not take the time and trouble to check before they write one back?

I also get asked why I named my child after a small orange...... heathens.

raisingrrrl · 11/02/2009 22:02

BBF - why did you name your dd after a small orange??

My ds is Zachary - we have had Isaac and Zachariah from various people. I can forgive various spellings of Zac/Zach/Zak/Zack as it's a pet name, but fgs why can't people spell his full name properly?

BlueBumedFly · 11/02/2009 22:07
Grin
MrsMuddle · 11/02/2009 22:19

How do you pronounce Caleb?

I've seen it written, but never met one. In my head it's like the start of the word "calibration".

Clary · 11/02/2009 22:21

I think if he's called Fray-zer then you only could spell it Fraser.

I guess people are thinking of the sticom maybe?

Shesells, I'm afraid you or Bryonie-Rae will always be spelling that. I agree Breany is pretty silly, but no-one could guess right, could they? I would ask you tbh.

Actually my DC never have their names misspelled but maybe that's because they are named after everyone's grandparents!

I get extra letters in mine tho which irritates me a bit.

raisingrrrl · 11/02/2009 22:22

MrsM - it's Kay-Leb (i think) we considered it for ds but liked Z as an initial better!

Frasersmum123 · 11/02/2009 22:23

Its like 'Kay-leb'

OP posts:
loobeylou · 11/02/2009 22:35

Mrs Muddle, Caleb is Kay-leb, at least it is where I come from!! LOL

DD is Isobel, numerous wrong spellings from friends and family alike.

Other DD is Rosie, Rosy I can just about bear but what's with all the "Roise"s she gets in cards???
