It's really beginning to get on my tits.
I've selected the charities I wish to support and do not wish to be guilt-tripped everytime I log on to MN.
£10 a month is a lot of money to some people, and from what I've heard a lot of NCPCC's money goes on advertising, not actually helping children.

It doesn't make me feel guilty. Like you I've selected who to donate to; but I don't understand why should you make yourself feel guilty about not donating to everyone.

So yes, YABU.

CandleQueen · 04/02/2009 21:53

It's those eyes.
And I fully understand what may be going on behind those curtains.

And that advert is there at the top of EVERY page!!!!

OP posts:
MrsMerryHenry · 04/02/2009 21:55

So don't look at it. Look down.

CandleQueen · 04/02/2009 21:56

You can't not see it. I',m trying to purposely not look but it's there all the time!

OP posts:
LoveMyLapTop · 04/02/2009 21:57

It doesnt make me feel guilty
It annoys me that they spend so much on fancy pants advertising instead of spending it on the children they should be helping.
Which is why i give to OTHER childrens charities.
Rant over, I thankyou, I thankyou!

CandleQueen · 04/02/2009 21:59

Hear hear LMLT. Too much cash going into advertising agencies hands methinks.

ConnorTraceptive · 04/02/2009 22:01

Have to say I hadn't noticed it.

Would happily give £10 a month if I thought the NSPCC were particularly effective

It freaks me out. The little girl behind the curtains reminds me of the toddler in S. Kings Pet Cemetery. I can see her trying to cut my ankle off with a big knife whilst I am sleeping!

CandleQueen · 04/02/2009 22:12

Not just me then McKenzie!

OP posts:
poshwellies · 04/02/2009 22:16

It reminds me of me as abused child,I could see everyone but I felt no one could see me-I actually hadn't noticed it before this thread.

LoveMyLapTop · 04/02/2009 22:23

Mckenzie you are so right
Goes off to hide under duvet and awaits associted nightmares!

Libralovesbiscuits1975 · 04/02/2009 22:28

lol, I thought I was the only weirdo who was freaked out by an advert!

poshwellies · 04/02/2009 22:45

and poor you with your nightmares over a advert...get over it.Don't want to donate-then don't.

MrsMerryHenry · 04/02/2009 22:49

for poshwellies. Hope you're okay.

I didn't notice the ad before now, either. I ignore most ads, actually (sorry, MN Towers!).

Candle, you can ignore it if you try.

SnowlightMcKenzie · 04/02/2009 22:54

Problem is poshwellies. It makes people like you sad, and people who never experience abuse freaked out to the point of ignoring it.

So it isn't a very effective ad is it? The didn't do their marketing research properly.

I already have issues with their marketing strategy and the ad isn't helping their case.

I'm sorry about your past though and do donate to charities I have researched well.

CherryChoc · 05/02/2009 10:49

I use adblock too - gave in to the temptation when the banner ads on hotmail kept crashing firefox!

And those ridiculous smiley ads "SAY something" grr... My web browsing is peaceful now

Child abuse is wide spread and its sad that charities like the NSPCC get less money than the RSPCA. A lot of people think if they close their eyes and stick their head in the sand that it will go away.

I know children who have to attend special school, not because they were born with anything medically wrong with them, but because of the abuse their parents inflicted on them. (Ie. take healthy toddler, shut them in cupboard and under feed them, prehaps throw in a bit of physical/ sexual abuse for good measure = wrecked life)

I actually think the advert is very well done. It damm well should upset people that child abuse exists.

margobambino · 05/02/2009 12:28

I believe that public awareness is very important. I agree Reallytired. it should upset people that child abuse exists.

In the country I come from, when a child abuser or rapist is put in prison, he definetely gets murdered by other prisoners. I never heard of a person who went to prison for child abuse and came out after his sentence. Maybe this is not the place of asking but am i being unreasonable to feel happy about it?

MrsJoeMcIntyre · 05/02/2009 12:29

I already give an amount to the NSPCC every month by direct debit, and somehow the ad is still making me feel guilty!

BennyAndJoon · 05/02/2009 12:34

Doesn't bother me, but then I don't notice most of the ads.

And in these trying times in the world of advertising, MN need all the dosh they can get I expect. At least they aren't advertising Nestle or McDs or Fruit Shoots.

So YAB a bit U

LoveMyLapTop · 05/02/2009 13:17

Really tired - I agree that people should give more to childrens charities than animal.
I work in Child Protecction so am aware how much this is ignored by society in general.
I jusst do not like the NSPCC's advertising campaigns.
I think they spend far too much on their ads and should spend more on services.
I prefer NCH and Barnardo's.

Reallytired · 06/02/2009 11:52

Do you think that nspcc should spend money on highlighting that child abuse does exist? Prehaps money would better be spent on helping schools and other people who work with children spot abuse. Hpwever we all have eyes and ears.

It was not just the lodger, the boyfriend and the mother who were responsible for the murder of baby P. We all played a part and the blood of baby P is on all our hands for not doing enough.

I think the NSPCC spends money on campaigns because child abuse is ignored. Prehaps its a good way of spending money to highlight it to mumsnetters that horrible things do exist. Then maybe there would be less demand for the services.

Gorionine · 06/02/2009 12:04

OP for the forst tim in my history asa Mnetter, I do not know if you are or not BU as I agree with you they ARE trying to make us feel guilty but would comfort myself knowing that I do my bit in a different way, just like you do.

Reallytired, do you think peple who donate to other charities than NSPCC have got more blood than other on their hands? (refering to your BabyP post?

Personaly, I do not give to NSPCC but to other charities and I do not feel I played any part in his terrible death. I think we all do know that ly this happens all to often but making people feel guilty is not the solution.
