It's really beginning to get on my tits.
I've selected the charities I wish to support and do not wish to be guilt-tripped everytime I log on to MN.
£10 a month is a lot of money to some people, and from what I've heard a lot of NCPCC's money goes on advertising, not actually helping children.

I don't understand though - why does feeling guilty or horrible about child abuse make it any better?

I know there is child abuse happening all the time, I wouldn't hesitate to mention something to my HV if I thought a child locally was being abused, but I don't want to brood on it all the time, how is that going to help anyone?

Anyway I'd rather donate to childline or similar than the NSPCC, they seem to spend far too much money on advertising and pushing ridiculous agendas like being anti smacking - now I wouldn't smack, but I don't think it's abuse in the way most people use it. In fact I think leaving small babies to cry themselves to sleep is much worse.

YANBU I have now changed what charities I give to now, any that guilt trip or constantly pester me are off my giving list.

The TV ad that has the teenage girl being slapped again and again and again with a very loud and agressive crying/shouting has really upset and pissed me off. GUilt tripping of the worst kind, we are all aware of the abuse that happens to children there is no need for adverts like this. I also imagine they are very upsetting to those who have been abused and have to put up with ads reminding them of that terrible time.

Frasersmum123 · 07/02/2009 17:54

YANBU

I used to give to the NSPCC, but they kept sending me flyers reminding me to put them in my Will, so I stopped.

I am sick of charities sending me stuff - some send coins, labels, pens etc - they should use the money to help whoever they profess to.

The Railway Children get my money.

Oh, and Shelter

I am reluctant to give to the NSPCC or any charity that blatantly spends so much on advertising campaigns.
Also hate the shock tactic approach, I am aware of the implications, I don't need it shoved down my throat.

Upwind · 10/02/2009 18:24

YANBU these ads are upsetting to those who have suffered abuse and it is in no way clear how or whether any money donated would be used to help prevent cruelty to children

yes I know a raison d'etre of the NSPCC is "raising awareness" but I would rather my money was used to actually help

BlaDeBla · 10/02/2009 18:27

I have found NSPCC at best unhelpful so would not give to them on the basis of their attitude.
