To hate the fact that parents think a 'fruit shoot' is a healthy drink for a 1 yr old?

My BIL is always shoving these horrible drinks down his children's necks. I wont let my DD of 15 months near one!

Tut! Naughty naughty BIL.

They taste totally disgusting. But I don't throw a fit if my DC want one occassionally. And it had to be said that the little bottles are really good for filling with water and taking on a run, or filling with salad dressing for lunch at work.

Mooseheart · 31/01/2009 14:39

At this thread. I've got that deja vu feeling again...

You should have seen the crap they put in my 4 yr old dd1's 'Smoothie' this morning from that dreadful Mille's Cookies place. It almost pained me to see her drink it, I thought it would be wholesome until I saw them make it.

I kept suggesting that she didn't have to drink it all but she persisted. She's now boing-ing all over the trampoline.

LostVagueness · 31/01/2009 17:23

RealityIsMyOnlyDelusion - Oh my God! You take your children to McDonnalds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stone her now!

It's just that the nephew and niece drink about 5 a day each! And then BIL wonders why he has trouble controlling them.

yabvu
how else will he wash down the sausage roll/scotch egg?

nappyaddict · 31/01/2009 17:59

He probably doesn't know that they are unhealthy. Perhaps stop judging and gently inform him.

DS has milk, water or diluted freshly squeezed juice from our juicer or sometimes i buy copella if it's on offer.

Has Sunny Delight had a relaunch?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 31/01/2009 18:11

OFGS its not poison you know. I agree that they are not good as a main drink but one or two as a treat when out and about won't hurt. Nor will a sausage roll or Billy Bear ham, or Haribo or..........

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 31/01/2009 18:24

My child doesn't like them because they give her Marlboro reds a funny aftertaste

lol@Reality! As a kid, I loved the chicken and bacon pancakes with a nice big pint glass of 'tooth rotter special' aka Ribena. T'was a staple in our house as an after school snack

Ahhh. Fond memories when we all 'adora (ed) kiora'

MrsMattie · 31/01/2009 18:30

fond memories of...

My typing is shite. That's what all that tartrazine does to you in later life, you see!

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 31/01/2009 18:49

yes

MissGreatBritain · 31/01/2009 18:51

ManIFeelLikeAWoman PMSL!

Fruit Shoot is no better and no worse than any squash that contains additives and sweeteners, ie most of them. Only the Hi Juice varieties contain no sweeteners. Nothing wrong with a bit of sugar - in fact there's more sugar in pure fruit juice than in a lot of diluted drinks.

As a general rule, I'd say avoid aspartame as much as you possibly can, give sugary drinks in moderation and you won't have much to worry about. A mix of all things, with nothing being banned is the key I think.

OneTrickMummy · 31/01/2009 19:20

I stood in Sainsbury's the other day looking at all the children's drinks in plastic bottles, and imagined them all empty, in landfill, huge stacks, every day, from every supermarket in the western world.

That's why I don't buy FruitShoots.

And the taste is SO sickly they will leave any other drink offered as an alternative tasting insipid. So they develop bad habits.

And 15 months is younger than I would give a child anything other than water, milk or real diluted fruit juice.

But that's just me. I have no view on your BIL or you, OP!

oldraver · 31/01/2009 19:21

Whatironing...if you want a 'squash with sugar' try Rocks.

MillyR · 31/01/2009 20:06

I have just had a look at a bottle of Rocks (the apple and blackcurrant one). It is 26% fruit juice and the rest is sugar and water. Apart from citric acid, there is nothing else in it.

So it is preferable to other squashes.

wickedwitchofwestfield · 31/01/2009 20:13

LOL!

my old MB had a huuuuge go at me for giving my old charge a fruitshoot when we were in margate having our tea by the seaside...

this is the same woman who let her child have chocolate and lollipops for breakfast on occassion

each to their own, a random fruitshoot on a day out at the seaside will not harm anyone I say!

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/01/2009 20:20

terrible things

but as with most things

once in a while doesnt hurt

someone needs to invent/make a apple juice cartoon that is week, ie pre diluted with water

would make afortune

littleducks · 31/01/2009 20:25

it has been done blonde, sainsburys own brand

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/01/2009 20:27

really

bugger - bang goes blonde being a millionaire

have to say have NEVER seen them, but now i know they exsist will be searching!!

jooseyfruit · 31/01/2009 20:30

tesco do one

littleducks · 31/01/2009 20:35

and these are a good fruitshoot substitue if you need the plastic bottles but i must admit that i first became aware of these wen i saw them in mcdonalds so i think that the products are def changing as customer demands change

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/01/2009 20:35

ok if tescos drink isnt made in a nut factory

and has 75% fruit and 25%water

then where are the fucking nuts

i may be blonde but 25+75 =100%

so why can they guarantee it to be nut free
