to be angry with my DP for feeding our sick 11 month old a yogurt 5 days out of date?

I discovered this morning that my DP fed our 11 month old son a yogurt for breakfast that had past it's sell by date 5 days ago. Now, he's very opinionated on the use-by/sell-by date thing, and insists on ignoring them (he thinks it's a conspiracy to get us to eat more...). I think this is fine if he applies this rule to himself, and he knows his body is fine with it, but I feel fuming that our poor son, who has had a raging temperature for 5 days, diarrhoea for 4 days, and is really quite poorly, has been given something that's potentially going to upset his tummy even more. I wouldn't be so annoyed (but I would still be a bit cross I think) if he weren't ill, but the fact that his system is already compromised and now he's having to digest something which potentially could compromise it further, really annoys me. AIBU?

yes a bit am sure it is fine

macdoodle · 31/01/2009 10:36

just to clarify if it was fish/chicken/meat somthing like that I would agree with you - but yoghurt or anything else sealed and pretty much preserved is fine - we often eat yoghurts here weeks after the sell by date

Geepers · 31/01/2009 10:37

It's fairly obvious when a dairy product is past it's best though. It will have been fine.

silentlywondering · 31/01/2009 10:40

If 5 days past sell date will only be 2-3 days past use by date should be fine!

Sell date is always 2-7 days shorter than a use by date. Best before is a guide and only taste is affected

coveredinsnot · 31/01/2009 10:43

It was a use by date. As I said, normally I wouldn't be that fussed, but my son is ill! Would this not make any of you more cautious?

If the yoghurt lid hasn't blown it should be alright, however I probably wouldn't feed a yoghurt to a child who has been that ill with a stomach problem. I wouldn't feed any dairy yet and stick to things like dry toast.

hambo · 31/01/2009 10:49

I would be angry at him esp if your wee guy is already poorly. Your husband is probably right re dates etc but I always stick to them!

spicemonster · 31/01/2009 10:53

No it wouldn't make me angry. If it isn't off, it's not going to hurt him (although not entirely sure yoghurt is a good idea if he's got diarrhoea)

SoupDragon · 31/01/2009 10:55

If this kind of stuff annoys you, you should have thrown the yoghurt out 4 days ago.

LIZS · 31/01/2009 10:55

probably fine, I might have been mroe cautious than usual with an unwell tot. But yes yabu , not all dads would even think to do breakfast. You could have chucked it out if you were that sure you didn't want it fed ot him. Don't be surprised if he leaves it to you in future !

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 31/01/2009 10:56

I think YAB(a bit)U here. 5 days really is nothing and it would be very obvious if the yoghurt was off.

Like Christywhisty says, no dairy is a great choice following an upset stomach so I'd stay away from it until you're sure he's better

TotalChaos · 31/01/2009 10:57

gosh looks like the only one who thinks YANBU. I'ld be pissed off too for the same reasons as you.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 31/01/2009 10:59

I wouldn't be annoyed re the date. it will be fine, but as others have said I wouldn't be giving dairy to a child with an upset stomach.

smudgethepuppydog · 31/01/2009 11:03

Nope, I'd be pissed off too, I'd be ok if an adult had decided to eat it for themselves but I wouldn't feed it to a small child well or unwell.

skay · 31/01/2009 11:14

I would not feed a SICK child out-of-date food.

If the child is WELL then I would not have a Poblem.

You are not being unreasonable.

Gorionine · 31/01/2009 11:22

I think in case of yogurt it is "off" when the lid is not flat anymore but a bit swollen. If lid was Ok chances are the yogurt was as well.

Saying that I would be a bit ennoyed too if it was fed to an unwell child. Maybe dad was not aware of the no dairy rule with upset tummy?

ra29 · 31/01/2009 11:27

I would be really annoyed. And tbh wouldn't feed an 11 month old an out of date product even if he was well. I just wouldn't want to risk it...

nannyL · 31/01/2009 12:26

i wouldnt be giving a child suffering with dioreah yogurt...

but yogurts 5 days past their date are almost always fine (and you can taste if its not) so would have no worried about giving a yogurt that was just past the date

last week i ate a yogurt that was sue by 26 dec and i was fine as was the yogurt!

msdemented · 31/01/2009 17:33

Yogurt doesn't really poison you when it's a bit past its best. If it was a live yogurt it might have even more good bacteria in it, which could be helpful for a gut depleted of normal flora through diarrheoa and vomiting!

eNABlemetobebetter · 31/01/2009 17:37

I don't think YABU. Men just think differently about things and maybe he thinks you are questioning his parenting? I don't think dairy is great when your child has been ill but maybe tell him from that angle?

coveredinsnot · 01/02/2009 15:20

Some of your responses have made me laugh, especially LIZS who tells me not to be surprised if he leaves breakfast to me in the future... Luckily he's not an idiot, he does breakfast with our son every day, he's just got a funny thing about use by dates! eNABlemetobebetter I think you're right when he perhaps thinks I'm questioning his parenting. But that's often the case when two parents think something different.

Anyway, we read through all your responses together and he was dead chuffed to see so many in his favour! But even after that, he said he thought that giving a child who was ill food past it's use by date probably wasn't the best idea in the world.

am with you - I would have been v. annoyed by the principle but based on what others have said can see that he will be fine so no harm done?

typogrelf · 01/02/2009 15:24

YANBU!

bergentulip · 01/02/2009 15:27

Yoghurt by definition is gone off anyway.... so yes, YABU.

Sorry.

It is a conspiracy to make us buy more.

(!)

traceybath · 01/02/2009 15:33

yanbu - i don't eat out of date food and certainly wouldn't give it to a poorly baby
